proftournesol Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 I dropped into the Bright Brewery yesterday and really enjoyed their Smoko Rauchbier (smoked beer). Not enough of it made in Australia, it's a very interesting style.

Didn't like these ones that much- https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_570285/mornington-peninsula-brewery-sorachi-kolsch-cans-330ml A bit insipid https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_551913/stone-ripper-pale-ale-cans-355ml?orgSearchTerm=stone ripp Actually too hoppy, believe it or not. it sort of becomes acidic, like drinking green tea or something. https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_578362/feral-war-hog-ipa-cans-375ml?orgSearchTerm=war hog Not too bad but not a patch on the Ballast Point, Pirate Life or Balter IPA's, IMO. I did like- https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_379039/brooklyn-lager-bottles-355ml Very good for Yank pi$$ https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_625379/little-creatures-fire-falcon-hoppy-red-ale-bottles-330ml?orgSearchTerm=hoppy red This cheeky little red is my fave of the day, just the right balance of chuggability, alcohol content, hoppiness and flavour. lol @ chuggability ... i like it 1
TomAus Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 If you are in Melbourne, enjoy British ales and have Costco membership, they are currently selling Hobgoblin 5 l kegs for a mere $29.90. There are still a few left after my visit... It might however not be for everyone, for as they say on one of their t-shirts: 2

Luc Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Having just spent 6 weeks touring all around England and Scotland I've finally realised (after being told by countless expats) that our beer in the main, is farking roobish. Yes we have boutique breweries but if your not living near them then you'll have little chance of experiencing them. A tiny little postage stamp of a pub we went to had 27 cask beers on tap and another 20 plus keg beers on tap(I never knew there was difference). People came from miles to drink there, you could barely bend your elbow to drink the stuff as it was just packed. The range and depth was gobsmacking. Many of the beers were one offs and never to be seen again and this was a regular pattern we experienced in many pubs, more so in England than in Scotland. I've got a heap of pics I took of the taps at the many bars (I sadly ended up at...) and eventually I'll post a few of them and the names...the names are laugh out loud in some cases. The colour and the murky depths of some of them are truly spectacular and had me questioning whether I should sip them let alone drink the whole half pint. I learnt early on to buy halves as it was cheaper if you didn't like the beer and there were many that I didn't but their IPA's...WOW! The taste and depth of the beers there leave our cold bubbly pi** for dead. 2

Luc Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 @SETSergio I know I shouldn't mention wines in the beer threads but the pinot noirs I had in Paris...loved em. My lack of schooling in wines was quickly shown up and to save embarrassment I learnt to look for Pinots. It's now taught me to move along from Durif and big tanniny reds and I'll be exploring them more from now on.(expect me over in your wine thread!)

Why don't you back our Australian brewers? We have heaps of great beers in this country. And there are great beers around the world, don't justify your generalist comment putting **** on the local industry. Pisses me off -- Go forth and educate thyself --- https://craftypint.com/beers
Luc Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Double ouch! I'll stand by my comment Fez and you can remain as pee'd off as you like. Yes we have a growing boutique craft beer industry but it pales into insignificance compared to the UK. Your standard pub tap beer offers little choice and if you live in the regional centres(like I do) then your choice of craft keg/cask beer is extremely limited and actually almost non existent. I support the local industry by buying my IPA's from as many small breweries as I can via a local bottleshop. If you'd care to scroll back through this thread you'll see many pics I've posted of these beers. Might I suggest you try being a bit less thin skinned and check your facts before you engage your finger. I'll save you some time and you can look at the last two beers I've popped up. Have you tried them, have you supported them? 1
Darren69 Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 I really hope Pirate Life and Balter don't sell out. Feral- RIP. Would be very ironic if I started buying Ballast Point and Sierra Nevada all the time after previous drubbings I have doled out to the yank grog makers, haha. I imagine they would be devastated by my opinion. Will prolly get some nice utilitarian Cooper Premium Lager this arvo in readiness for Phillip Island this weekend though I am a tad beered out after six days away with the lads. Oink.

I think you'll find the issue is with the big breweries either owning many pubs around the country or making offers to small town publicans for exclusivity that the poor guys can't afford to refuse. We (as a country) were also brought up with only big brewries like VB, XXXX, Toohies etc and many over the age of 60 just won't change. Also, a good friend of mine immigrated from London around 6 years ago and the only beer I ever see him drink is VB, so it must appeal even to the Brittish, not that I'd touch it unless free. Pinot here is excellent but you either have to have the knowledge and dedication to buy young and put it away to let it age gracefully... or pay big $$$ Many years ago I boarded with a chef who worked at The Melbourne Club. His contract was only for Mon-Fri but if he ever got called in on the weekend his bonus was practically any bottle he wanted from the cellar. How I miss the days he would bring home entire aged scotch fillets and $100+ bottles of Pinot to share... Apparently some of the private collections cellared there are beyond belief, particularly Dr John Hewson's. 1

zippi Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Just discovered this hread...yaaaay! ...beer being another of my keen interests.@Darren69 is that Mike Patton of FNM? Don't get why in the comment... I am fairly (but not exclusively) commited to local SA beers. Love my Vale IPA + Ale, Smiling Samoyed IPA, one of fave beer spots is a pub/eatery at the entrance of Tannunda in the heart of Barrosa vine reagion. So many choice craft brews on tap and otherwise. With the general DanM varieties I kinda like the lightweight Yenda Golden Ale, don't mind occassional Coopers Pale, Japanese Saporo+to a lesser extent Asahi, Barcelona Estrela, Belgian Leffe, also Karma Citra by Feral...
evil c Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 (edited) Just popped the top off this - a Bridge Road Brewers Bling IPA (wouldn't want to repeat it after a few) with several different types of hops and has real rich character with a nice slight tang to the finish. Plus at 5.8 percent might even meet@Luc requirements in a beer. If he can be @rsed to get down here for the hifi show I might even share one with him! Edited October 19, 2017 by evil c 3
