mondie Posted September 10, 2007 Posted September 10, 2007 For sale is my highly regarded Plinius SA 250 MK2 in silver. This is an original MK II unit, it operates in fully balanced Class A . l would rate its condition as a very conservative 8, l cannot find any cosmetic blemishes on the amp at all (see pics below) l purchased the amp off the original owner in New Zealand Feb 2005. Before shipping it to Australia l sent it to Plinius in Palmerston North where the amp was heat soaked, bias checked and went through all the QC checks a new unit would prior to shipping. It was given a clean bill of health, l was adivised the amp had seen little work and was in as new condition. Receipts for the amp service are included with the sale. Rated at 250 Watts/ch into 8 ohms, 500 watts/ch into 4 ohms and bridgeable to 1000w monoblock operation. Switchable from class AB to full class A via the front panel. Comes with the original massive double box, manual, warranty card and invoice. This amp drove my now sold Equinox Jupiter's with their sub 2ohm load with ease and sounds wonderful. Musically nuetral, it has a touch of warmth/tube like liquidity and posses none of the harshness and brightness normally associated with SS amplifiers. Retail on these l believe was originally around $14k, the current model retails for closer to $18k. The SA-250 is a real reference solid state amp l am asking $3900.00 ono for the amp, this is a bargain when compared to other recent sales which see this amp go for upto $5k+. l will leave the amp here for a couple of weeks and then will give eBay a try. Any questions don't hesitate to drop me a PM. Cheers Mondie _______________________________- Here's some further info from the Plinius website: PLINIUS technology includes fully balanced, class A operation for all products; this reduces many kinds and sources of distortion. The balanced circuitry inherently cancels out even order distortions, and the class A operation eliminates small signal nonlinearities and crossover distortions. A switch allows the user to select class AB operation; this produces less heat for noncritical listening (dance parties), and allows you to hear for yourself and appreciate the sonic benefits of class A operation, contrasted with the class AB operation mode that many other power amps (both solid state and push pull tube) employ. It also provides a convenient way of leaving the power amp on, and warmed up for optimal fidelity, at all times, but with reduced power consumption compared to the class A mode. http://www.pliniusaudio.com/reviews/review09.asp Specifications 250 watts RMS/channel into 8 ohms both channels driven, 500 watts RMS/channel into 4 ohms Bridged Output: 1000W RMS (mono) Dynamic Headroom: 1db or greater at 8ohms with music Freq Response: 20hz-20khz +/- 0.1dB at 0hz Distortion: Typically 0.1% THD at rated ouput Saturation: 265 watts/channel or greater into 8 ohms Voltage Swing: 130 Volts P-P Current Output: 70 amps short duration continuous per channel (Fuse protected) Rise Time: Typically 2 microseconds Phase Response: +0 at 20Hz, -2 at 20kHz A-weighted Input Sensitivity: 1.3 volts RMS for rated output at 1kHz Input Impedance: 47000 ohms Dimensions: 275mm H x 500mm W x 485mm D Weight: 58kg (130lbs), Packed 65kgs.

Tony C Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Great price Mondie. I don't think this baby will last long. Oh if only I was cashed up at the minute. Cheers Tony C
Spearmint Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Mmmm tempting, although I’m under a strict financial curfew these days, still trying to get my replacement speakers approved. Good luck with the sale…that’s if I don’t weaken in the interim.
Tony C Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Spearmint, Nice amplifier if $$$$$ can stretch. I have compared this unit against Krells at the same price, and though I am no fan of current Krells this unit held its own and was very musical. Tony C

Not an amplifier that would normally be stuffed in a cabinet. Tony C

Tony C[/b] I know,if I lived in Tassie I'd consider it. Your right about the cabinet too, anyhow it'd be to hard lifting the unit above my head into my cabinet
brumby Posted September 11, 2007 Posted September 11, 2007 Another positive Joz, You could remove the heating from the room as this baby runs hot. Not an amplifier that would normally be stuffed in a cabinet. Tony C[/b] It's unfortunate but cannot be avoided. A powerful Class A Amp must by its nature be big and heavy, consume large amounts of electricity, and generate enough heat for a small house in a Qld winter. I have resolved never again to buy a piece of audio gear that I cannot lift, and I could only have lifted that in my best days (sadly long behind me) by means of CONSIDERABLE exertion.
*Psycho!* Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Now THAT'S an amp! Someone is going to get a bloody bargain here. That observation is as true now as it was then. Combining as it does brute-force power, world-class finesse, superb build quality, and a genuine and engaging musicality, the Plinius SA-Reference is one hell of an amplifier. It does many things superbly, and nothing less than very, very well. To get what more sonic quality is available—and it's not very much—you'll have to spend multiples more. I recommend the SA-Reference with unabashed enthusiasm.[/b] http://stereophile.com/solidpoweramps/506plinius/index1.html good luck with your sale..I am showing this to my brother in law. He might be in the market for such a beasty.
Tony M Posted September 12, 2007 Posted September 12, 2007 Well, I haven't been posting much lately as I'm involved in some projects that are taking all my time and might mean that I have to access every spare dollar. It's a damn shame, because I reckon this sounds like the nearest thing to a real bargain that I've seen for a long time. Everything I've ever read about this beastie indicates that it's a truly world class amp that will drive just about any speaker without fuss or difficulty and sound marvellous while doing so. Knowing Mondie, I suspect it's likely to be closer to 10/10 in condition, too. Best of luck for a quick sale to a very happy buyer, mate. I'll be very surprised if that's not an imminent outcome. Cheers Tony
