I like the Apple Atmos  mixes that don’t have a physical disc release and that is becoming more common so you can’t compare.

Band on the Run is a good example, there is a DTS CD version but the Apple Atmos is far better than that.

On the flip side with deep purple's machine head being released today I’m apprehensive about that as the 5.1 sacd is incredible.

Very good review of the AV10 v Anthem AVM90 by Audioholics . Interesting that Theo owns the AVM90 and it was Theo who gave it the award of "AVP of the Year." Seems it looks embarrassing for him when the two unit are compared in great detail. Aesthetically AV10 wins hands down but it doesn't stop there..

Wasn't a lot of talk about ART. But Gene said that the AV0 has one beast of a processing chip running the show so doing full scale ART will not hinder it.  Overall I think AV10 was robbed of the award. I think Theo thought the AV10 would perform and sound like the AV8805 and other previous models. After listening to it in Gene's system he must  know now he gave the award to the wrong AVP. Gene sang so much praise for the AV10 that I bet it was his way of indicating the same to Theo  though Gene was diplomatic about Theo's choice.

Not sure if this was posted…audioholics say “got to have it ! “

https://www.audioholics.com/av-receiver-reviews/marantz-cinema-30?

Built in Marantz’s famed production facility in Shirakawa, Japan, the Cinema 30 comes with a confidence-boosting five-year warranty. This new reference-grade AVR “represents the pinnacle of Marantz’s celebrated approach to AVR design (and) distills all of the timeless yet progressive design, unrivaled performance, and technological excellence of Marantz’s product philosophy into one outstanding component,” according to the company.“

That is just marketing promo blurb, though.

And the warranty in Australia is 3 years.

IMHO for $1900 less ($6000 vs $7900), the 2024 Denon X6800H seems to have the Cinema 30 covered in all respects of actual performance. One might still choose the C30 (and pay all that extra) for perceptual notions of brand name association, looks, and illusions of hifi attributes.

Even the boards look identical!

Being a hobby, of course, it's all good fun, and not just gloomy accounting. Each to their own!

cheers

ah no ..its not all illusion and perceptual notions and association, looks and "hifi attributes" marantz actually does go to fair effort over denon base..

theres about a 4-5 kg difference between the two avrs... in my experience what marantz adds is HDAMs across all channels. analog stages, they do work on the dac implementation, power supplies

infact they couldn't be more differnt under the skin, this is the denon x6800h

image.png.8a113e6573062d82d60152a3953d7dc4.png

this is the marantz cinema 30...

image.png.5b4eba1389dcbcff8453097e934de069.png

the hdmi board might look identical..but can see differnt power supply there will be differences in analog stages hdam board underneath etc... the amp stages look similar just split...

things like the marantz audio board is specific to the c30

image.png.2170c8ca4e97ff05d054b07277848740.png

the hdam board below for the c30 is unique to marantz

image.png.904ba61259f61d90a2ab9dc4121b1113.png

even select components

image.png.eca1b0ee632362fbf65d6bb078b12915.png

and by the way denon do this kind of thing too in limited releases/reference gear..and  we saw it not that not long ago with its 4010ud and matching integrated where music is a priority...

marantz hasnt done a version of the X8500 or A1 h these both will see have similar topology to cinema 30 and am sure are a step up still from the marantz ...

image.png.cc16e3d6b1df231f3ae18d1418a0c47a.png

a1h

image.png.184e0c563289b90add273404585cff13.png

marantz step up is the processor and amp.. and will see under hood the effort they go too..

av10 again here a lot cant see on implementation on audio side and their music focus

image.png.83d3cea94cd3173074c7d6b4dfca2eea.png

amp10

image.png.b4f2aabf0a4507a690660964807e0034.png

there isnt like of this kind of thing in the avrs above and thats the aim to take a step up ...and what typically happens right through the denon and marantz range as go up ladder in price and spec... and the difference between brands with their approach as well..

ultimately it gives a lot to pick between and choice is yours literally 🙂

I agree with Betty Boop. The construction and parts of both machines are VERY different.

But each to their own.

definitely each to own.. i have owned stuff from both brands... marantz definitely has a more music focus through out..

doesnt mean the denon stuff is no good or anything have owned mid range to upper mid range denon AVR and they were very good and made good processors too... the top end flagship denon mighty avp-a1hda processor was a one of a thing from denon, owned it close to a decade  and definitely was a step up and in another league from the marantz av8802/av8805 processors owned after .. the marantz av10/amp10 current flagship pre powers though is defitnitely more in league of denon flagship and taken that beyond to nothing like i have seen from either brand in something like 20 years !

in end folks have to pick and choose between and theres a lot ot choose from which is great. should be something for anyone from between the huge range both brands offer...

This vid from Masimo describes some differences between Denon and Marantz model range. Interesting default filter choice by Marantz vs the default on Denon.

very good comparison actually .. and goes through nicely the differences not just technical but in sound character...

i will say though sound signature wise theres definitely a difference there.. but probably a lot more subtle than some make out... and also we no have selectable filters too... with defaults so some choice there...

they sum up well that if really looking for cinema focus and more compact solution thats cheaper the denon is the go.. for a music focus the marantz adds its own element...interesting too the commentary on how the marantz even calibrates on audyssey vs dirac !

thanks for this link... while i have always had some thoughts between the brand its good to know from massimo what they are worked to achieve.

For those who missed out the last time, great offers at the moment for Denon and Marantz AVRs. The Marantz offer goes up to the Cinema 40 not Cinema 30.

Totally worth it to get the Japanese made Cinema 40 at least under this price offer.

The last time we had prices this good was around October/November 2023 I think.

I changed from an Anthem AVM70 to the Marantz AV10 recently. I do miss some aspects about the anthem, but overall very, very happy with the Marantz.

I really like the sound of the room correction with Audyssey One for anyone on the fence about giving it a go. It makes me wonder how much better Dirac could possibly be.

Interesting that you prefer Audyssey over ARC.  Could this be partly due to the AV-10 being a better pre processor than the AVM70?

And what is your HT configuration and how many subs are you running?

congrats on the av10 🙂

re audyssey ... its what i am using still... gene in the youtube above talks about using audyssey and says he gets "incredible bass integration " and across all his seats... he says its due to the power of the DSP of the av10...

i'm like gene in that i havent done DLBC on dirac and havent got all my 4 subs up yet ! so "loving audyssey" just like gene says :D

as with him i also find the hdmi solid !

he sys for 15ch or less this av10 is the processor to beat 🙂

i agree with his description of the amp10 as well as how good it also does on auro 3D 🙂 for music...

Same here Al. Waiting to move to new home before implementing Dirac. Like you will be using  4 subs.

Wondering if you will do the same as when you used the Audyssey Prokit.

A step by step write up with pics if you recall.

Like before this would be a great contribution to those members including me who are implementing it for the first time and no doubt would create a significant amount of interaction amongst us as it did before.

Just a thought.

good thought, will definitely try to. If I can get cables run for the extra two subs (little bit of in wall cable run and under house crawling I’ve been putting off for ages) :D I might be in a better place . Slowly catching up with all else that’s banked up since we did renovations … been very time poor for a long time sadly …

Anyone heard any news re Dirac ART for Denon/Marantz?

I've been really happy with Dirac LIve with multi sub bass control but would love to take it to the next level with a less than ideal room. Recently watched Dune Part 2 and home viewing from a UHD disc was significantly better than the Hoyts cinema I saw it in on release.

nope..apart from the subs ..... partly also why been holding off on dirac.. to see what that brings...

anyways they can take tier time if it comes out bug free and rock solid and just works...

i saw something about a german youtube quoting art for marantz is now a 2025 thing 😮

i am sure a bit of a shock.. but in some ways perhaps they have just realised its not really ready for prime time... especialy given the number of marantz (and denon) owners out there. its best unleashed bug free and working. they can take their time to get it right ..if thats the case. am sure will still have the odd quirk or something but as finished as they can get it the better ... will keep using audyssey in mean time which is still doing a fine job...

That is what I like that about Denon and Marantz.

Unlike Anthem who when released ARC it  was full of bugs.

Well I'm going to take this conversation down to other end of the Marantz AV product range.

I've just purchased a Stereo 70s for my hobby room - just waiting for stock due to the popularity of their EOFY 20% trade-in offer (no actual trade in required).

The Stereo 70s is a bit of a hybrid - neither a true AV nor a Stereo receiver due to its additional HDMI ports but missing additional channels (obviously) and a good chunk of AV processing/correction.

Suspect purists from both camps would be up-in-arms but it ticks my boxes.

I'll share my first impressions once it is setup - hopefully before the end of the month (stock permitting).

ps I had a look at the Cinema 30 when I was purchasing - what a beast. I can dream of one replacing my SR8012 one day.
