New owner and newbie. Connected the amp to my PS3 thro HDMI. Selected Audio Out to Linear PCM. The PS3 only lists from Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 to PCM 7.1 signals.

I tried a few different BDs and selected DTS-HD 7.1 on the disc but the amp only shows PCM 7.1. Will try the Select button tonight to see what signal I am actually getting from the BD (as recommended by another member earlier).

Does this mean I can never get the amp tp show the TrueHD and DTS-HD lights (on the small display) when I use the PS3??

Cheers!

No you can't get the AMP to display DD TrueHD and DTS MA. Simple reason is because PS3 is the one doing the deconding.

Your amp just play the decoded data, hence it won't recognize the format.

At least that is my logic.. : ;D

Thanks for the replies.

I thot PS3 cannot decode DTS-HD or maybe I am mistaken...prob already updated thro one of the firmware changes.

Anyway, just wanted to make sure I am getting the HD audio  ;)

My Yamaha 1800 is starting to have some funny display issues on the actual receiver, previously it displayed what speakers I had connected, now seems to display what the source is capable of.

eg;

- previously if I played a 7 Channel Blu Ray it would only show 5 Speakers showing and no LFE

- now what it shows is all 7 speakers and the LFE showing when I only have 5 a channel setup

It seems like it is purely a cosmetic issue however I am worried that this might be affecting the actual performance of the receiver.

It seemed to happen after a friend of mine knocked out the power cable of my ps3 and plugged it back in straight away 2 or 3 times, (yes I know... believe me he won't hear the end of it!) when this occured my ps3 was not connected to the Yamaha 1800 at this time. Perhaps this could be an issue with the hdmi port on the ps3?

Sorry to hijack the thread, I would of started a new topic but I am unable to :(

Hi, what is your bluray player? If it is the PS3 it should be showing just PCM as the PS3 decodes the audio and outputs it via HDMI.

cheers.

Thanks bro. Managed to find a lot of info.....

Makes me want to get a stand-alone BD player to see if I can detect any difference between the sound decoded by the PS3 and the sound decoded by the amp... :)

Posted

check out the other threads...some say got difference, others say no difference, but also depends on the hardware...

btw, I also connected my Xbox 360 to the 663 and using an optical cable for 5.1 sound. However, I dont seem to get any sound from the centre speaker when I play games. Anybody else encountered this?

My centre speaker definitely working as there is sound when I play movies on the PS3 and DVD player.

Hmmm, later must go back and try a DVD in the Xbox 360. See whether got sound...

Hi guys,

Just an update. My retailer has confirmed that they have sold out of the V1800 $1000 batch.

The actual boxes had been slightly damaged. Upon closer inspection, it didnt actually 'hurt' the the AVR, as i saw this myself.

I dont particularly care for a box, but i didnt have the full G in my wallet, so i paid a deposit and should be here next week when i can pay for the whole lot.

I'll certainly keep you guys posted if he happens to get another cheap batch. i'd normally give you a number, but he did advise a lot of people were still quoting that amount..

Cheers

Black for me please :-) I might have a chat with Eastwood hifi, but can't imagine they would even get close to $1200.

EDIT: last time i recall, Steve didnt stock the V1800? Correct me if im wrong

so i should assume 4 should be ok as well then? are there specific settings somewhere on the avr where you set it? (on the back or something?) if so - what options are available? cheers.

There are specific settings on the avr to set speaker resistivity. It was mentioned in the manual and I remember I had to press the button on the avr front panel to set it. Please let me know if you still need advice. I will check and come back to you with details.

Cheers,

Anyone know if the 1800b supports XvYCC Clour Space.

In an email I received from Yamaha they state "Yes, the RXV1800B supports XV Colour... XV Colour is very similar to "whiter-than-white" and "blacker-than-black" signals but is an accepted HDMI signal type, where-as WTW and BTB are NOT standard HDMI signals and consequently aren't supported on the RXV1800B".

Given there definition of XvYCC colour space I am a little skeptical of their response!

If you want more information read this link http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=888942

Theres nothing conclusive there unless I missed something.

The Yamaha USA web site lists new v1900 as having:

1080p-compatible HDMI (4 in/1 out)

Supports Deep Color (30/36 bit), x.v.Color, 120Hz/24Hz Refresh Rates and Auto Lip-Sync compensation

whilst the 1800b only states:

Latest HDMI 1.3a (4 in/1 out) specification supports with Deep Color (30/36 bit) transmission, 120Hz and 24Hz Refresh Rates and Auto Lip-Sync compensation .

Both say "HDMI powered by ABT" and supposedly both use the ABT 1010 chip?

One AVS member says it does not! I suspect he is correct unfortunately.

Anyway, confusing to say the least!!

Cheers,

Bryan

Hi Guys,

Just letting you know i received my new V1800B via courier on Saturday.

Im really just speechless on the sound quality it brings out.

I have these hooked up to Jamo S606 Fronts, Rears & Centre + 2x Sub300's

I cant really give a detailed review, but playing in 2ch Pure Direct mode, the S606 Fronts sound beautiful and natural, and even the bass without the sub sounds clean, tight with no audible distortion. The guitar frets on some Cd's really feel like your in the studio.

Hooked up my iPod to the Yammy Dock, and the MP3's spring to life, and sound much better than it ever did.

Played Jumper & 300 on Blu-ray DTS HD MA, and really felt a big presence & dynamics in the lossless format. I've never really felt immersed in a movie, but considering the modest budget ive spent on my HT upgrade, i cant seem to wipe the smile off my face.

Running 2 subs defo makes a difference. Fills my 8x4 room nicely with one at the front+back.

Overall, im very happy with my setup, and for all those who are thinking about the 663, but can stretch to a V1800 (ive tried both) i certainly think its a worthy upgrade cost.

Myabe in a year or 2, i would upgrade my speakers, but im pretty sure id be able to get a good 3 years on this AVR.

Cheers :D
