Most new amps will offer it in their mid range and up

IMO its like the "Loudness" button, there is more rumble but it is a bit too pronounced.

Your call.

Hi Pete, is the dynamic volume useful for those watching late nite? Hoping that it will help to control those sudden loud scenes & boost up quiter scenes...

For all potential buyers, do yourself a favor by having a read of the user manual, which is what I did prior to my purchase. It will really help you decide if the feature set is good enough and if the user interface suits you.

I actually dislike the Denon interface, which is another reason why I have not owned one before.

Also the Dynamic EQ and volume is a paid upgrade for xxx8 models like the 3808

Cheers

Why not study the manual and the links to Auddyssey bro

There is too much to write... :)

Cheers

Hi Pete, was just hoping to hear your first hand opinions on the dynamic volume thingy.. I do lots of late night movies at home, so if the dynamic volume works just fine as claimed (i.e volume levelling of scenes are opotimised), may jump ship to denon  ;D.

Don't mind me asking... but where did you download the user manual? I have been searching this entire thread and don't seem to find it... I tried to google "Denon AVR-2309 manual" and got nothing.... Would appreciate your help with the link... Thanks.

Have you gone to the Denon websites?

Usually the USA site has a manual and is quite similar.

I have update the first page with URL

For those with HTPC setups, note that the ATI cards do not work with this amp

There is no OSD over the HDMI, and you need patience with the interface.

I hate the remote control....

I now need to decide if I should pay more and how much more for a new AV amp with a better remote, and Ipod dock...

Onkyo 706 vs Denon 2809 perhaps?

Any opinions?

That's FAST!

:o Hi Pete, 2309 (incl. remote) so bad huh?

I have high standards...

Since it is new and a friend wanted the 2309, I had the option of selling it to him.

My equipment must be user friendly and I am willing to pay. I am spoiled by my Marantz remote and interface. It may not irk you esp since the 1909 and the 2309 are cheap.

Wow... I have not even finish looking at the manual for this set... And you sold it after... 1 or 2 weeks of usage? Remote must have been rather bad for you...

So I chose a Denon AVR 2809.

It streets for about 1.5 k pre-tax or so.Most shops in Adelphi will offer this price. I got mine from Seng Heng, but KEC will also retail for about the same. Spread the sales a bit right ...

Why?

I had asked some friends about the heat issues with the Onkyo x06 generation and even though I could get a decent price, the heat issue put me off sufficiently. Plus the fact that I could not get a decent Ipod Dock.

The Yamaha 1900 is a great amp, has all the features plus a good dock, but I won't be using the internal amps which I am paying for, so the price proved to be too prohibitive at > 17xx

The Denon was a mid-priced amp, and comes with a better remote (2 in fact) and a smarter DSP and a higher end Audyssey MultiEQ XT, plus I got a good deal on an Ipod dock, so that sealed the deal.

The Denon also did all the decoding correctly and there was little lag when changing HDMI inputs. It has also been out for a while and there are few bugs reported on AVS forums.

Will report more on the Denon 2809 later... unless I sell it again :)

Oh the 2309 will probably partner a Monitor Audio RS based setup in its new home, I will also write about that later.

Did a 4 point setup, turned my subwoofer down and got going. The new remote is way better and makes setup and navigation much easier.

I still do calibrations with the SPL meter after the auto setup, then turn down the rears too. Audyssey tends to set the rears a bit too loud.

Cheers

The CPU of the 2809 seems faster too and setup time was less. Trying out my new Indy 4 BR disc and effects transit well, dialogue locks onto the screen well and effects are quite distinct. Of course this is also a well recorded disc.

Will do more tomorrow, enjoy my movie for now :)

No issues recognising DTS-MA 7.1 discs too.

EDIT:

The remote is worth the upgrade alone!

It recognises my HD DVD player, my Pioneer, my Panny DVR and my Marantz CD player!

The winning feature of the Denon series is the HDMI power on control, where now I can switch off my amp and still get HDMI pass through to the TV so with the last set input, you can go direct to the TV, which works well for days when you do not want to switch on the amp or just keep it simple for elder folks.

The other nice thing is individual channel crossover frequency adjustments. There is plenty of control of the various parameters to get a good fit to your speakers and room.

Had a chance to try some old familar hits with the 2809 last night.

IMO Audyssey is a real boon, and will help, with the caveats that you still need good speaker placement and room treatment. A DVD version of Band Of Brothers came alive and there was so much detail coming from all the channels. Placement of effects was stable and there was a good imagery created which was convincing and places you in the action.

Dynamic EQ works well esp since I really wish to keep all my hearing intact. The subwoofers still get a good workout, and yet dialogue is not overwhelmed.

Putting Indy 4 into my PS 3 was a totally higher level of HT enjoyment. First the THX trailer was awesome, with both subs firing, the room was physically elevated off the floor and yet the subtle bits of sound effects were still distinct and even in a busy action scene, the effects were still clear, clean and easy to follow.

Of course, having good speakers and a powerful power amp helps. (I am not using the internal amps and I am using this as a HT processor). Adding DPL IIx adds space and more dimension to the soundscape, but do not overpower the front channels with too much SPLs from the rear channels.

All in all, a worthy upgrade to the Yam 663.

None... please see my previous posts

Anyway its too early to run it in stereo and there is too much unplugging, will consider using it later on

Cheers

Pete,

Any comment on the stereo music playback on 2809?

For those who want to hear this amp, let it warm up a bit, and you can bring your speakers to my place and have a demo, probably next Sunday or Friday night (not this weekend).

PM me, leave your contact and if you are new, please introduce yourself.

Spent another night with the amp.

This remote ranks highly amongst the supplied remotes. It is important to have hard buttons for commonly used functions, and they are differentiated by size and shape. I once wrote a letter in Hi Fi Choice blasting the remotes from Linn, Audiolab and the old NAD ones because of this, glad NAD has changed theirs.

There is a huge plethora of codes and I am pretty sure you will find one to fit your brand of TV, CD player etc.  The remote alone IMO is worth the upgrade price from the 2309.

In HT, there is a perceptible difference with the 2309 and there is a better implementation of the Auddyssey, and the difference in the enveloping experience is obvious. It is also much better than the Yam 663 in this respect, in generating the ambience required. The transition from the front to back speakers and back is done seamlessly and all this while dialogue is well defined. All this of course is still dependant on a good speaker setup and placement.

Dynamic EQ works well, and allows you to play movies at a lower volume without losing the bass effects. But it is more integrated and effective than a simple loudness button.

I have not tried the video processing as I can switch it off and allow pass through of the signals from the PS 3 and XE1 which IMO do a better job. I have also not used this amp in stereo.

This amp is a worthy addition to the mid-budget level amps and for those looking to get a simple yet sophisticated proccesor for their HT setup and are upgrading from older non-HDMI amps, this amp deserves a look.
