petetherock Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 A friend is bringing me some nice coffee from Campos in NSW So anyone here knows where I can get a nice plunger thing for not too much, and any good coffee places locally and brands to try? Cheers
Doggie Howser Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Got my Bodum from Taka. Been using it for years.
wizardofoz Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 welcome to come and use my espresso machine to see how it really should taste can get him to bring 250gms for me? hehehe just kidding ... well if he can I'll pay for it, and gladly let you try some. make sure its freshly roasted.. not more than a week old if you can... after 3-4 weeks from roasting its well past the use by date...and dont what ever you do get it ground ... or you will be wasting your time Yes I LOVE my coffee!!! Try an Aeropress from www.highlandercoffee.com oh but maybe out of stock http://www.highlandercoffee.com/accessories.html#Aeropress
petetherock Posted April 29, 2009 Author Posted April 29, 2009 Thanks for the Aeropress suggestion, will see it when stocks return. Unfortunately my friend is loaded with stuff, but I will see where else I can look to for a coffee press type thing option. Not ready for a coffee machine yet...
bong Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 hi pete, i second the bodum coffee maker. i used to use a manual espresso maker that's heated on a stovetop during my school days ... like this ... now i'm using bodum's electrical equivalent .. very fuss free, and it gives a great espresso without a full blown espresso machine!
wizardofoz Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 once you go full espresso machine with fresh roast and grind on demand can never go back. for anyone reading this thats never had a decent coffe or thinks they have - there are only a few places in singapore that I would say serve a coffee that is really memorable. Highlander per above website Oriole under Pan Pacific Suites Sleek (near SG Pools in SLS food court area) Peaberry and Pretzel in Sunset Sooma behind Hans at China Sq using a fully automatic machine is well in my mind a joke. No control over anything at all. You need to control grind , timing of shot and temperature not to mention tamp pressure and if possible water pressure. Sorry getting carried away here, as you might have figured I'm a coffee slut 8)
Jedi R Posted April 29, 2009 Posted April 29, 2009 Try Vietnam coffee at Trung Nguyen cafe. They have an outlet at Liang Court at 2nd floor. The thick strong coffee is shiok !!!
kuryakin Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 hi pete, i second the bodum coffee maker. now i'm using bodum's electrical equivalent .. very fuss free, and it gives a great espresso without a full blown espresso machine! Hey, this looks simple & easy. Where to view it in SG?
Doggie Howser Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Anyone tried Nespresso? Seems very convenient. :P
Wymun Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Heh DH, interesting that you asked. I have a Nespresso machine at home. Very convenient and easy to use / maintain - it's a matter of clearing the capsules from the catching tray after a few rounds of coffee. In my machine, it doesn't come with a milk dispenser, so that is purchased / added separately... I'm no real coffee conneisseur, but must say the coffee taste / aroma is sufficiently authentic / decent. Ultimately, I use it more to serve guests in the house, as I still prefer the traditional "sock - kopi-tiam" kopi, which I have yet to come across any machine that can deliver as well....:-)
Pong Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 Try Vietnam coffee at Trung Nguyen cafe. They have an outlet at Liang Court at 2nd floor. The thick strong coffee is shiok !!! Bro, the strongest brew they have there is only half-strength compared to what they have in Vietnam . . . . that's what they claimed :o any one tried the coffee poop of the ceavat cat? :P Black Hog at Central serves very good coffee ;D
ysl Posted April 30, 2009 Posted April 30, 2009 I find it dam difficult to find or make a good cup. I prefer the local kopi, though I have also a dm good coffee, but that was abroad. I've tried the french press, expresso boiler type, nothing works. Once in a blue moon I get it right and it was a fine cuppa. I was told, other than the type of bean, it is the finess of grind, how long you leave it in the french press before you press it etc etc. One good kopi I recently discover is this one at Bukit Timah food centre. You can tell everthing the fella does is measured and he is always watching the darkness if he kopi. Sorry OT, but nothing like a good cuppa. Thanks for any tips !
petetherock Posted May 4, 2009 Author Posted May 4, 2009 Edit: Ok I just got the Bodum Kenya 17oz press: My Campos has arrived :)
bong Posted May 4, 2009 Posted May 4, 2009 Hey, this looks simple & easy. Where to view it in SG? try any of the places that sell bodum, the usual suspects perhaps, takashima household good section, tangs ?
petetherock Posted January 3, 2010 Author Posted January 3, 2010 Well after the BR shootout, it seems we do have a few afficiandos here in the forum. Wizardofoz's was quite nice indeed. And with the coffee maker on hand, it made the test even better. A coffee drink-out some time soon?
wizardofoz Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 I would recommend Highlander - its MRT and bus friendly (near SGH) and Phil and Cedric are happy to entertain a few out the back with other machines and the roaster to explain how things are done. They can accomodate a good size group too. www.highlandercoffee.com Peaberry and Pretzel are now called some other place and serve 5 senses beans from WA in Oz. A new roaster at Hopper Rd called http://www.papapalheta.com also have not bad coffee Sooma unfortunately closed too...a shame as they made a nice coffee indeed. Another roaster is at Biopolis near the citibank ATM - not open weekends tho :( Another place at Hitachi twrs called Black is also meant to be ok but I have yet to try as I dont get to raffles place that often. But if a coffee gathering is on the cards I will be there for sure - long as I am in Singapore.

ht.chua Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Thanks Francis. Will give you a call when travelling east. chua
petetherock Posted May 16, 2010 Author Posted May 16, 2010 Nice cups htchua, we can do another YCK area drink / Hi Fi and you can come with your cups! I have some Sydney Campos coffee to fill your nice cups.
wizardofoz Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Always wanted to try the Campos coffee... hope for your sake its beans and not pre ground. Anything roasted more than a month ago will be well past its prime... best 5-15 days after roasting and must grind and pull your shots or brew immediately before oxidation begins.
petetherock Posted May 16, 2010 Author Posted May 16, 2010 I am no expert, will check, it could be ground stuff... anyhow, I can get some friends to ship some fresh over.... I have a brand new plunger thing, but do the same stuff fit your super machine? So how about it, a coffee night? Since next weekend is Francis' shootout maybe a week or two after... Always wanted to try the Campos coffee... hope for your sake its beans and not pre ground. Anything roasted more than a month ago will be well past its prime... best 5-15 days after roasting and must grind and pull your shots or brew immediately before oxidation begins.
tsammyc Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I buy my coffee from Harvey Norman or Best Denki ;D Martello Brand. I like the Red and the Gold I had those high pressure machines where you get the best fresh dark roast super finely ground expresso, spend 2 minutes tamping the thing down before locking it in..... Best coffee, but messy and cleaning for 1-2 cups is not worth it. Decided that Harvey Norman expreso is good enough. It has the head, the aromatic oils are there and cleanup is just a few seconds. Everytime I buy coffee, I get to browse the latest HT stuff ;D
ht.chua Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 We can get freshly roasted coffee beans from Highlander. Shall we learn from Wizardofoz how he pulls the shot as shown in his picture.
wizardofoz Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 thats not my pic but its close to what I get... I have been detoxing for a month so not had coffee for a while :'( you can also get fresh roasted beans at Orieole (spelling) behind 313 orchard at the pacific appartments also very good. John there is the national barista champion here 2 yrs running IIRC will post some pics when i get back to coffee again which wont be long as I just got some new organic beans from east timore
