thats not my pic but its close to what I get... I have been detoxing for a month so not had coffee for a while :'(

you can also get fresh roasted beans at Orieole (spelling) behind 313 orchard at the pacific appartments also very good. John there is the national barista champion here 2 yrs running IIRC

will post some pics when i get back to coffee again which wont be long as I just got some new organic beans from east timore

That oriele place is pretty good. The piccolo latte is very good and surprisingly strong.

The food is ok, a bit too strongly flavoured- was v spicy, which I like, and very garlicky, which I didn't like so much (semi raw garlic is a bit pungent, if I'm going to eat that much I'd preferred it fully cooked).

I'm pretty simple when it comes to coffee making at home- just have a ceramic grinder and filter paper. Cheap as chips and supposed to be the best way of tasting a coffee. Have been pretty impressed with the Nespresso range, reasonable taste (though cannot use own beans :() but the ease of use and easy cleaning and maintenance are a real boon.

I get my beans from a roasting shop on Balestier road, pretty good stuff and quite value for money- can't remember the name now but its the only one there AFAIK.

My favourite are India beans from this place(though they don't always have it): http://www.monmouthcoffee.co.uk/store/asset/file/00/6l/NEWSLETTER_2010_Issue_5.pdf

I always ask my relatives to bring me over a little every time if they can.

Haha, reasonable taste....sorry Bro, I disagree.  You have not tasted the various blend from Brazil, South Africa, India, Colombia and Indonesia yet!!... :D Come to my place again and I will let you try out each flavor...... ;D

Just got 20 x 10 capsules (average 60 cents per capsule, 10 in a box) supply from one of the Bro's here who is a pilot and flies to London regularly.

Can hold Coffee drinking session in my place also......... :D

Just let me know the day and time.

*heh* thanks bro. Actually I'm a 'regular' at the Nespresso shop in Ion, free coffee whenever I'm nearby.

Still, feeling a bit ashamed these days to go and 'try another' at the shop.

The system is unbelievably user friendly. Perhaps you're right, am getting too fussy in my old age, the taste is surprisingly decent and the milk frother works v well. Just that I miss being able to buy my own beans and grind them fresh- there IS a difference- but then again, life's too short to be cleaning the grinder and coffee machine, etc.

I guess that they make the money on the caps, a bit like in games consoles. The monopoly business structure does bother me a bit too.

BTW how much did you get yours for again? A friend is coming over from the UK, could ask them to get me one if you have any lobang.

I remembered I paid $420 (mine is under Krupps with milk) which came with a big box that includes a box of 20 capsules (different blend), a espresso class coffee plate and cup, and operating manual plus another 18 boxes (10 capsules each box) free gift (promotional item).

Now with the pounds lower than before, u sure can get a bargain....... :D

ah, this one I think: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Krups-XN716040-Citiz-Nespresso-Aeroccino/dp/B0028QHMFK/ref=sr_1_16?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid=1274107703&sr=8-16

You got a v good price for it!

Why Krups? I thought magimix is a better brand, although their version looks identical  ::)

The Nespresso capsules should be cheaper soon as the patent expires and people other than Nestle should be able to make them. There are a few Nespresso clones. Coffee is generally about 1/2 to 2/3 the price and tastes different, but equally good.

I recall reading an article about Nestle, which said the Nespresso product was first created way back in 1986 but didn't take off until recently.  If it's that old, it should already be out of patent.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nespresso

Hmmm... Wiki suggests that patents will start expiring in 2012.

My wife went on a business trip to London earlier this year.  As it turned out she didn't have much work to do on the trip, so she went shopping and wound up buying a Nespresso machine and hand-carried it back.  Two weeks later she got sent there again, and this time she bought the "starter kit" which consists of 25 sleeves of 10 capsules each.  All much cheaper than the local price -- and this was when the pound was still more than 2.1.

A few months later her brother, who went to a conference in London, did the same thing  ;D

The machines are indeed practically identical, we have a Magimix while my brother-in-law bought a Krups, but aside from minor cosmetic differences, they're the same -- even down to the drip tray, the container for spent capsules etc, these seem to be the exact same part.  If they're all from the same OEM, that explains a lot.

They are all OEM in Switzerland for Magimix, Krups, Delonghi, etc., like you say, sama sama!!... :D

Pai sae OT a bit from all this talk of "high end" coffee  ;)

Do any of you drink freeze dried coffee in the office where Nespresso and other fancy machines are not available? I've been drinking Moccona blends for a while now and am fairly satisfied with their taste (I drink my coffee black without milk or sugar).

BTW I've tried a few of the Nespresso range blends - not bad very aromatic and definitely super convenient for the urban crowd.

My personal fave is the Legendee blend from Trung Ngyuen in Vietnam (available in Liang Court).

Cheers,

Nick

The Wiki article says DeLonghi is the exception and does not come from the same OEM manufacturer that the rest use.

I used to drink Moccona freeze-dried back in uni hostel days, the one that looks like flakes or chips, rather than granules.  Quite good for instant coffee.  Although in the second half of final year, my mother pointed out that no one was using the percolater at home with me at uni anyway, and suggested I bring it to the hostel with me, which I did.  So late-night mugging sessions were at least more pleasant, fuelled by properly brewed coffee rather than instant.  Just the aroma from the pot helped...  ;D

Nespresso patent- the one with the broadest claim was dated way back in 1979 which has long expired. that's why you can see similar concept machines around. They have numerous patents but most of the later one relates to minor improvement over the capasule. I believe the 1992 patent is the one that covers the generic capasule that is currently seen.

there may be some downside in prices but I believe could be limited due to the high cost involved in the use of alu and getting the coffee vacuum sealed.

Actually, how many cups of coffee do you guys drink a day?

Much as I like a good coffee, I only drink a cup every day, occasionally a 2nd cup late at night. I never considered any of these gadgets (not even a simple percolator) cos it just didnt make sense. No one else drinks coffee in my home...

So I'm stuck with only instant coffee, the kind you make by the cuppa...

But I do envy you guys... :)

0-2 cups per day normally. Do note that the Nespresso and clones just have a TINY amount of coffee in those capsules, so 2-3 cups probably has the same caffein as a cup of Starbucks coffee. These machines are waaay more easy to use than a percolator or drip, so it does make sense for you. Note that the Martello sold at Harvey Norman also has tea capsules.

Anyone took advantage of the Nespresso GSS discount combined with the Taka 10% members discount to purchase a unit over the weekend.  Was down at Taka on Saturday night and the whole Nespresso booth was swamped with folks purchasing devices and capsules.  A Citiz with milk was going for $565 after all the discounts and if you were the Platinum card holder, that would have also translated into a further $30 Taka voucher plus $3 parking rebate.  Today's the last day of the Taka discounts so folks who want to snag one can still do so.

Been trying to resist doing that, it's so cheap in the UK in comparison (I always thought stuff sad more ex in the UK- aka Rip Off Britiain).
