After more than 6.5 years of faithful service, my Popcornhour C-200 decided to take a short break. :D

This happened about a month ago when I decided to watch Rock & Roll 25th Anniversary that it couldn't wake up from its stand-by mode.

Further check found that there ain't any 5V and 12V juice. Stripped the power supply apart and found these two defective capacitors. Decided to order from ebay after factoring the travel cost that it only made me poorer by S$6 for 12 pcs of capacitor out of which only 2 pcs were used.

After replacing them, the C-200 wakes up and now purring along without any hidcups and hopefully for another six plus years.... ;)

@Dizzy .. fyi, there is no current leakage which causes the test pen to light up in my unit.

Nothing new been added after making a bold decision to embark on a new adventure and that's the reason why the long absence. :D

Now it's the right time to catch-up because the "journey" is on auto-pilot. ;)

Bro, would you mind showing the ratings of the original caps ?

My C-200 is still going strong but just want to standby the caps just in case.  ;D

As requested ...

Capacitors on the left are from the C-200 Power Supply and those on the right are the one purchased from Ebay.

Fyi,a good capacitor usually looks indented, when viewing it from the top. In fact if you rub your finger over it you can feel the indentation but a defective capacitor is one having a "bulged or swollen" top ie no longer looking indented.

Thank you for those kind words but I believe that I will benefit more from other "media gurus" here instead. ;)

why go to the expense and delays of ebay when you can get locally from rs-online free postage - normally delivery next day or 48hrs, or get from Koba in chinatown?

Posted

This was simply because RS is a selling S$4.30 for 1 pc for the 68 microfarad and Ebay is only S$2.75 for 2 pcs. Delay of 2 weeks in my opinion is bearable.

In my situation, there is no urgency in "fixing" it because there is more than a handful media players to use.

Would any PSU issues be due to capacitors or for my case it could be other things? That is mine pop and smokes come out. ;D

The PSU is on back order from PopCorn. Also do you know SLS sells the exact PSU?

Thx

Bro DizzyD. Capacitors does pop and goes up in smoke.

Since the caps doesn't cost that much, why don't you give it a try first ?

Also if you are going to use the box for long, you can also consider replacing all the caps since the caps have a limited lifespan.

Don't think you can buy the exact same PSU from SLS or SLT.

Don't think SLT/SMS sell the PSU which the C200/300 is using.

Most power supply dies because of the failure of passive components (capacitor, rectifier, diode, etc) due to life span and in your case .. it pops and smoke then it is a different story. You can remove the power supply from the c-200 by unscrewing more screws and see where is the "burnt" component. The tricky part is to unclip the four plastic locking clips from the power supply circuit board,- I only unclipped 3 of them to do the soldering.

If anyone needs 1000 microfarad capacitor let me know because I paid only USD2.50 for 10 pieces and don't think there is a need to replace the same now. Maybe six years later .... :D

On a positive side if there is a spare desktop PC lying around gathering dust then you can use the power supply unit to power the popcorn because it uses the same power connector and perform the same functions. The only unsightly part is the power supply stacking on top of the c-200.

You are damn right ...I am going to use the C-200 as long as possible because having a full BD menu feature is so much better than those with BD Lite.
