caddisgeek Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Work is sending me to Canberra for a few next week and may find myself with an hour or two up my sleeve. Does anyone know of any good music stores in our nations capital? Cheers Steve
Craigandkim Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Hey Caddis, you can try this www site (What are you into CD's or Vinyl?) For 2nd hand stuff Flip-side @ 45 East Row in the Sydney building in the city centre isn't too bad (I think thats what its called).
caddisgeek Posted January 30, 2012 Author Posted January 30, 2012 Sweet, thanks craigandkim, into CD's and Vinyl (imagine that, what a freak!)
Fangzie Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Impact records is shut. Just for the record.. Also, looks like that site is old. 7 digit phone numbers...
Monty Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 The list posted above is very old. Impact Records is sadly long gone. It was beaut. These days, the following two are nearest and dearest to me: Flip-Side Exchange on East Row in the City. Most of my pocket money goes here. Except for a small selection of new vinyl their stock is all second hand. CDs are displayed in roughly alphabetical order (A-C, D-F, etc) so you’re best off in a mood to browse and take pot luck rather than searching for something in particular. Being second hand it’s skewed towards pop/rock and older releases but they have decent jazz, blues, classical, hip-hop, metal and world sections. Prices for CDs are pretty good (~$6-$15) with cheap bins at $4 each or three for $10. New vinyl is $20-30, second hand from $1 but generally $10-15 with the cheaper stuff in crates on the floor. There are also a lot of DVDs and games if these are your thing. (Don’t tell Gruffnutz, but there’s a sweet little bakery a few doors along. You might start here with a baguette, pastry or beef vindaloo pie to fortify yourself for the browsing task at hand.) Landspeed Records in Garema Place is two minutes walk, across the road and into a pedestrian mall. This is more your typical independent record store. Stock is skewed a bit more towards new releases, indie rock and hip/hop, but they also have pretty substantial punk hardcore and dance sections. New vinyl is $20-$40, second hand from $10. New release CDs are usually $20-22 and there’s an interesting range of cheap ($10) back catalogue type selections across all genres (except classical). Both stores have been decent about returning warped vinyl when I’ve had to do this. Neither store is as grand as say Red-Eye in Sydney or as deep and tasteful as Greville Records in Melbourne, but I am thankful for each of them and happily recommend them to you. I reckon shopping in foreign record stores is one of the best things about travelling, so enjoy.
