Thanks I used to have Norton to de-frag my drive. Do you do it now? PCs have such a function built into their OS.

I sadly I may need to keep my Lenovo as some sites still work better with a PC...

Reminds me of my cousin, very smart follow instructions to have dual boot up on his MBP. End up formatted his whole hdd just to install winXP. :x

I have a PC because some sites just hate Mac.

But if my old MBP were fast enough, I'd just stick to Macs and run Parallels only if I had to. With the new i5 and i7 stuff, it might just be good enough.

You will need to buy a copy of a Win OS, run the parallel or equivalent software, thats close to the cost of my Netbook.

Makes more senses to keep my trusty Lenovo business laptop.

What about running Windows on the Mac?

I guess it's okay if space is not a premium. With the MBP/Parallels/Win OS, you carry one notebook anytime. With the Lenovo or netbook, you carry two?

With Thunderbolt introduced, we have not heard much about what peripherals will be available other than RAID drives. I wonder if soon there will be Thunderbolt DACs?

Also, with the new generation of optical Thunderbolt, will it suffer the same issues as optical Toslink?

i am unsure if optical thunderbolt is going to be a reality. thought it was just a rumour.

for computer audio.. u can check out the CA website for speculation. i have no opinion myself since i am not familiar with the implementation and if it will really give a positive benefit to audio. one issue i have though, is really on the max length of the cable.

From Intel's information, they are courting A/V companies too. Amongst them are Apogee and Avid. Not sure when the optical option will become a reality though.

You can use Crossover if the windows apps that you wanted to run is supported by them. Crossover allows you to run the windows apps on mac without the windows OS.

Thanks, not sure if Quicken 2011 (PC) or SPSS has this function?

Will be a really nice feature :)

Quicken 2011 is given the Bronze award whereas SPSS Base 16 is given the Gold award.

Gold means the software should works as on Windows whereas Bronze means there are enough bugs that one would use with caution.

Thanks again, it seems that the last version was in 2008?

Its not too expensive, will have a look and maybe buy it when I am in USA in May...

I may use it with 2010 Quicken... how did you find the Bronze thing? How about the 2010 version?

Quicken support looks bad...

I might get iBank 4 instead....

Anyway, earlier last week, I had placed an order for a MBP when the new model came out, so it was a nice thing that they allowed me to change this....

Now I am aiming for this:

MacBook Pro 15” 2.0GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7

8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB

750GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm

SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display

AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Pro - Auto-enroll

Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter

Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter

petetherock: never tried copying the prefs. Those files are all in the iTunes directory, I think.

Your new MBP looks great! :)

Just the base model, or due to change in RAM and SSD price? I think Apple adjusted prices for RAM and SSD across the board on all computers recently.

Wow, didn't notice the price reduction until I read it here...but prices of upgrades to SSDs or the combo SSD/HDD options is still exorbitant - basically around $1,000 for a 256GB SSD. Really hope those prices start falling because, having owned the new MBA, I can't imagine buying a Mac without an SSD drive at least for the system itself.

If I'm not wrong, the SSDs they offer for iMacs and Mac Pros are off-the-shelf jobs, so hopefully they can drop the price if they revise the internals to incorporate stick SSDs like those in the MBA.
