jimi1624705950 Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 This year I watch a superb 1970 film, Kes. It's about a puny schoolboy from e coal-mining town of Bransley. He is a nobody and he knows it but one day he spots a kestrel hawk, catches it, trains it and his life is transformed. There are so many memorable scenes but I get a hoot seeing Brian Glover as a gym teacher from hell, a Bobby Charlton wannabe. The football scene where he pounds e poor boy who is a goal-keeper made me roll with laughter and yet it's also e most painful thing to see. A brilliant film and is available on Criterion. Definitely worth picking up if u bros have not done so ;) Ain't this a cute one :D ha ha! Good though it is, Kes is so depressing though...
jeromelang Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 I remember skipping my NUS class to see OuTC at Clementi and as I walked in there with my soft drink Fanta grape, I dropped it and was so pissed with my carelessness but when e movie started I forgot all about it. Haha At the old Cathay, once they refused me entry when I walking in with a orange Julius drink. So what should I do? The movie was about to start.... I dropped the drink on the floor. It splashed all over the carpet floor right in front of the entrance. I stepped over the mess ad went in to watch my movie. Haha
jeromelang Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Definite list: Amadeus Natural born killers Grease Top gun Priscilla: queen of the desert Purple rain (still kicking myself why I didn't see it on the big screen. Although I have the blu-ray, the 2 DVDs, the laser disc, the video tapes, the various CDs, ....the whatever format they'll release in the future) Tentative list Aliens True lies ...still considering....

Doggie Howser Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 In the same year of Shawshank, another lesser known movie about prisons called Murder in the First. IMHO, it was a much more moving movie. But it just got eclipsed by Shawshank Shame really. Great performances from Bacon and Slater. I never really ranked movies but off the top of my head: Casablanca - back when it was all dialogue and no SFX, the scriptwriter was king. Lucas' love scenes from Attack of the Clones would never have seen the light of day. And Casablanca IMHO has the best lines of all time. "Of all the gin joints and bars in the world, she walks into mine" "This is the start of a beautiful friendship" "Play it, Sam, for all times sake" (oft misquoted) and countless others, all from the gem of one movie. Big - somehow just resonated with me. Back when I was a kid and growing up seemed so far away, looking at the grown up world through the eyes of a kid was just amazing. Back to the Future- Think, McFly Think! What would happen if I turned in my homework in your handwriting!!? Last Crusade obviously. Sean Connery: "You call this archaeology!??", "Indiana was the name of our dog" I'll be back with more later, I hope

armoury Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 At the old Cathay, once they refused me entry when I walking in with a orange Julius drink. Rather ironic that these days they are doing their best to sell you whatever popcorn or softdrinks you fancy -- as long as its from their authorised concession stand. Unfortunately that's the real business model of movie theatres these days, especially in USA -- the movie is just an excuse to get people to sit somewhere for 2 hours, and to sell them the refreshments that they'll want for those 2 hours. The cinemas hardly make anything of the box office, their profit is mainly on the refreshments. Perhaps it wasn't the case in SG back in those days, hence, the ban, but I'm guessing it is now.

I am not sure on the SG model of the theatre but in the US the cost of the ticket pretty much only covers the cost of being able to show the film. Almost all the profit the theatre makes is from the concession stand which explains the heavy price as well as the rule of no outside food and drinks. Otherwise there would be no theatre or the price of the movie ticket would have to double. It doesn't personally bother me if people sneak in food but they shouldn't be surprised or angry if they are caught and stopped from doing so since that is the only profit making part of the theatre. Typically the studio has to make 2x the cost of the film in ticket sales to break even as well. If the film costs 100million to make and pulls in 150M in ticket sales, then it is a failure to the studio. Though they may make the money back over time to cover the rest of the costs, it wouldn't be a very profitable film.
westendboy Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Personally I never like to munch on anything while I am in e theatre and I abhor ppl who do so. Always find e sound of mouths chomping down on nachos and e smell of food distracting. The cinema can't earn much from me. :D

But I love eating at the cinema- but once I get past the first 20mins without anything then its usually ok. My kids love the cinema partly because they get to eat popcorn and drink a bit of Coke which they never get otherwise- I just think its part of the fun ;) Popcorn is a great source of dietary fibre by the way (the sugar and salt is not so good ;) ).

Doggie Howser Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Muah ha ha ha i freakin laughed my socks off!!! Matt is such a good sport and the mexican guy can be a great comedian! For the full context you have to watch a few episodes of Jimmy Kimmel where there's a running gag involving Matt Damon as a guest on the show and ends with a song involving Jimmy's girlfriend, who's a singer and stand up comedy artiste as well. But yeah. Even without the context... It's f**king hilarious!! Jason jay jay Yason yay yay :)

Another malfunction? ;D My fave zombie movie has to be George Romero's Dawn of the Dead. I think it's a freakin' masterpiece. It's not just e idea which is ingenious but he somehow manages to do a social commentary of e state of e civilized mankind. Holing e bunch of survivors in a shopping mall is a superb idea! Incidentally, I just picked up Shaolin Soccer on BD and will be watching soon in 45min ;D Quite hilarious and I thot Stephen Chow can never top it but he did later in Kungfu Hustle. In fact, I bought e Blu-ray before buying a Blu-ray machine!
landis1 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Hard to really order films after the first few: Adaption even though the picture quality of the dvd release was crap, i thought that the screenplay of adaptation by Charlie Kaufman was absolutely brilliant. the story was so original and so unique, i am dying to get my hands on the title on bluray ;D
