houdinifangs Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Well I'm a sucker for a full range speaker - they are my cup of tea warts and all. Neglecting the debate as what qualifies as a full range speaker, let's just say the starting point is a high efficiency, single driver and cross over free design. I'm no purist so I'll even accept hybrid designs. My dream speaker is a big Tannoy but I don't expect I'll ever raise the funds I need for those any time soon. Currently I'm loving my Hoyt Bedford's but I'm always on the scout. What I have heard: Hoyt Bedford Type 1 & 4 Amber Tannoy DIY Audio Nirvana DIY Fostex What I need to hear: Omega Zu WLM Rethm Are there any other commercially manufactured (not DIY) full range speakers in Australia?
heman_ Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 the Horn Shoppe horns have a fantastic reputation.
houdinifangs Posted February 11, 2012 Author Posted February 11, 2012 Not really, I'm taking a very, very open interpretation, I'm thinking of of the Diva's...single coaxial counts...I'm not the discriminating kind...

markm1111 Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 47 Labs Lens? Small, but full range. Fantastic sound. Available from a local distributor but can't recall the name off the top of my head.

You are more than welcome to listen to my humble Rethms
Full Range Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 You are more than welcome to listen to my humble Rethms He is a good house guest with eclectic tastes in music I think he liked my Audio Nirvana DIY when he visited FR
houdinifangs Posted February 12, 2012 Author Posted February 12, 2012 You are more than welcome to listen to my humble Rethms Thanks, I'll be sure to be in touch next time I get into the city. Found another one to add to the list: Consonance Casals
Vortexjah Posted February 12, 2012 Posted February 12, 2012 These appear to be made in Australia. Using lowther drivers. http://www.maudio.net.au/index.html
Vortexjah Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Just noticed another place that has full rangers: http://www.audiosalon.com.au/About_Us.html

planet10 Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 DIY Audio Nirvana DIY Fostex If you are willing to diy that gives you access, IMO, to the very best FR boxes available in any price range, but especially if you have a limited budget. Next question... what kind of amplification? dave
houdinifangs Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 I'm rocking an Audio Space PP 23w 300B. Unlikely to change anytime soon. DIY has always been attracted but I tend to rush building projects and I think FR's demand to be done right...
planet10 Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 The Audio Space has enuff power that you could take advantage of some of the smoother less efficient full ranges... say Mark Audio Alpair 7.3 in Frugel-Horn Mk3. I mention this one in particular as you can meet already built with diy half-way by getting a flat-pak kit. In Oz that would be Ben at Sound with Style. Or just have him build you a set. dave
houdinifangs Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 Thanks Dave, the Sound with Style link didn't work for me but I found the Mark Audio site very informative.
planet10 Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 The link works from here, but it is in $%# ^&*! Flash, and takes forever to load (and Flash always breaks somewhere). If you can't get there email me and i'll give you his email. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/full-range/199849-frugel-horn-mk3-picture-gallery.html dave
soundfan Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I am also a big fan of the single driver speaker, but IMO a subwoofer is needed to supplement the lack of bass. I've owned a few over the years in different types of cabinets, including Coral Beta 8's, Tannoy HPD385A, Richard Allan CG8T, Tannoy Little Red Monitors and a couple of others. The Richard Allans were superb (I sold my Beta 8's), cost me a dime, usually can be picked up cheap, and a great alternative if looking for an 8" driver to install in a cabinet of your choice.
houdinifangs Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 That's the appeal of the Hoyt-Bedford Type 4's - they have an inbuilt powered sub in each speaker. Here's another one pushing the envelope...perhaps too far but they do use a Lowther. And for the bass
tubularbells Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 I'm thrilled with my Omega 8 XRS speakers. Took a while to settle down but personally I have never heard imaging as good as this! Bass to treble response and overall presentation is so realistic im my opinion there a bargain at there asking price.
alistairm Posted February 27, 2012 Posted February 27, 2012 Next time your in Sydney come and listen to my Tom Evans.
pocoloco Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 (edited) Rethm and Brodmann do full range speakers; Johnblue would also be worth a look. I second Tekton designs as he will do custom work (Dynaco A-25 replicas for instance) Decware have some very efficient and intriguing speakers especially the radials; I also stumbled across Well Rounded Sound the other day, still very new to the market but John might be able to provide some more insight seeing as he's listened to them (review in the making?). Emerald Physics also do some very efficient speakers but they aren't exactly Hoyt-Bedfords... complimentary speaker porn Edited February 28, 2012 by pocoloco
