Bernie7 Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 What is the best buy currently at this price? I lean towards a Denon, but may be wrong. What do you think? Class D would be an advantage for size and weight reasons.
Guest francis woo Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 Bro, with the exchange rate now at Hkg$5.66 to a dollar, you shud look at Pioneer LX series of Class D AVRs....HiviZone.com...... :D

Yes Pioneer LX is in the short list. Hmmm....Denon doesn't do Class D in AVRs do they? At least I don't see it in the link. Actually it's for my bro-in-law and he will want local warranty for peace of mind.
Doggie Howser Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 For 3k you might be able to get a Emotiva pre/pro and Rotel's 5 channel ICEpowered power amp combo. Or SVS's 7 channel setup. But Emotiva is not locally sourced tho.
...1624705943 Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 you could save quite a lot of money if you go for the dared,i don't mind loaning you mine as i'm not using it at the moment. just drop me a mail

Class D would be an advantage for size and weight reasons. 3k is a good budget. IMO, the type of amplication, class A/B, D etc does not matter. I feel that Denon is the class leader now, in terms of the price - value technology presentation. Onkyo has good products, but you need to see if the heat issues persist and if that affects you. If not Onkyo offers good vlaue for money. To me a mid-level AVR used as a processor will be ideal, with the main 3 channels or 5 channels driven by a power amp of you choice. That would mean something around the 3311 or 4311 level for example if you choose Denon and when are here, or get the current ones at a run out price. Things which matter to me: - Audyssey Multi-EQ XT (not just EQ, but the better one) - enough HDMI inputs - if you think 3D is important, then get a HDMI 1.4a amp for future proofing, although you can get 3D without one - also note that the current HDMI video chips do not support 1080p o, just 1080i on the recent Yamaha and Onkyo offerings. - pre-outs - a good power section if you buy an integrated unit - things like a video chip and other frills are less important, but a good DSP section is also important - SHARC and similar chips can handle lossless signals well and better than the ones found in Marantz AVRs of recent times.
Audio Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 And if you choose Denon, make sure you got Denon Link. (Audio)
Bernie7 Posted May 6, 2010 Author Posted May 6, 2010 Guys, I knew for a $3k budget you'd come up with great suggestions :) DH, Rotel as power amp sounds good. Who's the SVS agent here? ... little children in house, so tubes are no no. Thanks for loan offer. Pete, very helpful insights on things that matter. Please explain what you mean by "although you can get 3D without one (HDMI 1.4a?)" Yes sir, Audio ;D
Pingu1624705792 Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 And if you choose Denon, make sure you got Denon Link. (Audio) Why? Denon Link is only useful if you also get the rathe ex Denon blu ray player, right?
DJQ Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Get the AVR4311. Denon Link is usefull for all applications. Stereo on CD, multi chn SACD via DSD, HDMI jitter clk control on Dobly TrueHD & DTS HD Master Audio ( DL 4th ) rather exp Denon Blu ray player? not so if you spend thousands on delicated CDP or SACD player plus hundreds to thousands on Interconnects. whereas a simple Cat 5 cable give you the best.
Pingu1624705792 Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 I'm a man of humble means leh.. ;) Point is, you're not likely to spend thousands on interconnect etc and have a budget of only 3k for AVR, methinks. And Denon link, not found in too many players, right? Assuming a modest budget for that as well, of course.

Agreed, DL4 is really useful for multi-channel audio, hi-bitrate from blu-ray inclusive. Unfortunately, it is too late at this juncture to splash S$2k on a DBP-4010 when 3D blu-ray players are on the horizon.. who knows maybe in CEDIA'10, Denon will announce a DBP-3011 with both 3D and DL4 support (there has not been a 3xxx series source player for a while). :P
Doggie Howser Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 DenonLink offers a very effective way to compensate for jitter similar to that used in higher end 2 box solutions from Esoteric etc. For what you are paying, it's a relative bargain. Besides, it'd outperform 8x analog interconnects you can buy for 300-500 (assuming 10% of budget). And it works not just with music but blurays too. Bernie, SVS is now sold by KEC but the amp isn't here yet. Rotel 5 channel equivalent is at Asia Sound.
Audio Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Denon Link hardly cost you anything. Just a ethernet cable will both both Denon Player and Denon Amplification would provide a consistently good connection that I have not found anything that better it. No need to buy expensive player...I started out with a Denon 3910 DVD player and it was very very good already. (Audio)
Pingu1624705792 Posted May 6, 2010 Posted May 6, 2010 Sorry perhaps I wasn't being clear. I'm not talking about cost of the cable. The player. 3k for avr and 2k for player. Anyone on a budget ought to consider this as well. I have no doubt on the benefits of the denon link though

Anyone on a budget ought to consider this as well. I have no doubt on the benefits of the denon link though hmm I got my 4310 at $2.2k and the 4010 at $2.3k. So overall I spurge another $1.5k to get it matched. I didn't get the more exp 4810 at $3.7k. Hope Bernie can get a clearer picture.

Anyone on a budget ought to consider this as well. I have no doubt on the benefits of the denon link though No misunderstanding here. Buy your $2K to $3K denon AVR with Denon Link. Buy a Denon Link capable player (no need Blu Ray type lah). I first play play with 3910, my budget is 2nd hand, only about $500. Many cheaper AVR and DVD / DVD-Audio SACD and CD Denon player with Denon Link capability..... We are talking about $12 STP ethernet cable here....not thousand-dollars silver interconnects.....
