Sorry bro,  maybe I shd have said "traditional hifi"  ;D

Nope, will not switch to hard disk music unless they can sound exactly like playing from a cd player. For me and many others, quality is more important than convenience. Anyone who heard or own a Naim HDX wanna share how it sounds?

Bro. PC + DAC is now on par with price equivalent CDPs already. Alot of naimers also moved on this DACs.

I have heard the HDX and it's nothing to shout about. Money better off spent on getting a good CD player with the option to get a DAC should in future computer music technology has matured.

I am also like you have not yet jump on the computer music and have not heard anything from computer audio that meets my expectations, even with a good DAC. A good transport still rules and it goes to show to me how critical jitter is especially when the sampling rate goes higher.

Hi,

Went to the show today, like someone mentioned the scale has gone down quite a bit. I liked the following:-

1. ATC rooms with computer-based playback of highres files (they have a notice to say that it's not MP3) and a rather expensive room acoustics correction system. The sales person was friendly and explained the whole setup, and there was a marked difference with the correction on vs off.

2. AudioManufacture speakers.

3. The Nagra's setup.

4. TS Lim's room with the SD Card music player and a smallish solid state amp. The Diva pre/power are there too but somehow not demoed.

The Dynaudios were a little too hard sounding to me.

Looks like the trend now is towards computer-based music playback. Even TS Lim's source is a SD card-based music player which sounded pretty nice to me.

Cherry Ma and Liu Deli's performance were nice, but I think there's too much echo applied to their voices, making it sound like a karaoke system. Wang Jin's performance with the live band sounded better as a whole.

Regards

CK

I like Wang Jin's performance with the live band...i mean the lady playing the piano ;)

Sound engineer setting up the system for Cherry Ma and Liu Deli really sucks, i when on sat show they adjusted the sound a few time during performance but still dont sounds nice.

Whereas Wang Jin's team put up a really good show.

Completing the line up... room with Audiomanufacture and Guru Speaker set up

I like this room the most.

The SLS is really something, hearing the height of the drums and the huge soundstage indeed very impressive.

Simply amazing..

Cheers

Quite surprised to hear tat the HDX is so so only. I read the review in HFC and their view was it was outstanding. If tat is the case I think its still quite sometime b4 we'll switch over to hard disk music. Anyway the price of the HDX is quite forbidding ;D

Maybe Absolute Sound didnt do a good job or my expectations way too high. LOL.

Nowadays, I am into modding my stuff to push the performance barrier with minimal cash outlay. I dare to say the my modded Rega Saturn is better than any of the Naim players other than the CDS3/555. Of course I could get a CDS2 and mod it to stratospheric levels too.

No WOW factor in this hifi show. : )

1st impression of the guru speakers was good in terms of open sound stage . But later found it had some boxiness in sound quality. After knowing the price is 22k further confirmed that it scores low value for money when compares to its sound quality.

My favourite system is Verity audio and Nagra set up. But again it is a 100k set up so just forget about it. : )

So what is the final winner come with good sound quality and value for money . . . ?

It is Quadral speaker from Germany combine with Vicent amps. It is the only budget set up which is able to show the baritone vocal so clearly in Aaron Neville's I Bid You Good Night. ( Some hi end system can't make it,commonly.)

The only weaknesses of this system is a bit too warm, speed slower and that's all. Its dynamic shook the room when Jazz variations were played. What else can you ask for from a 17k full system. . . ?  : )

I am sorry, is my mistake. It should be the Audiomanufacture SLS speakers which costs 22k. : P

It lacks body and oohmp when compare to Quadral speakers. I auditioned and was surprised by

SLS 1st. But after listening to Quadral, i was amazed how price control it is. It shares the similar sound quality as MBL to me. With the 7k price tag, it is a steal. What is 7k speakers can do when compare to entry level MBL floorstader which costs about 19k ? So it wins my heart and my . . .brain. : )

Those were the Amadis. About $45k, they bridge the gap between the Sarastro & Pasifal Ovation. I thought they sounded better at the KL Hifi show.

Ahh... Amadis 93dB... can be driven by sub 70W amps ;)
