Maybe post a pic of your nice amp in the owners thread and ask the question there.

I took it to Class A Audio Sat to at least get it checked out they are the service agent, so hopefully it will work out .

Hi All,

I recently inherited an old Accuphase E305 amp and Yamaha NS-1000M speakers. They are both Japanese models.

Just wondering what size step down transformer would be best.

Amp is rated for 490watts and the passive speakers are 100watts each.

Thanks.

Get a 1000W from Tortech just to be safe, you don't want to overdrive a step down and this way you have room to add on more components like an Accuphase DAC.

Wonderful equipment you inherited. All the Accuphase amplifiers (and preamplifiers and cd players) can be switched internally to 240V so really no need for an external transformer. There is no soldering involved, just switching cables around the transformer. Any electronics technician can do it quickly for very little money.

Hello John,

I used Class A audio do the voltage switch and repair of the phono stage of an old Accuphase E302 I brought from England and they did a good job.

I am thinking of getting a P400 and I was wondering if Class A audio has done restauration work for you on the amp?

Thanks

Laurent

I would have ,had I known at the time taken it to Gary Cawsey Audio in Brunswick 0433884924 or Hi Fi Exchange in Clifton hill, as Class A has had my P400 for 3 mths and it  was put in for a check up only ( no Faults) I was told it would be a 2-3 week turn around, several phone calls and always excuses more important big jobs, Techs overseas, blah blah blah and zero care factor on there part. I told them I was would give them there 2 weeks again if not done I would pick it up and take it elsewhere was told I would lose my Deposit. Anyway ready next week they say.

Sorry to say I cannot recommend them. Or give an opinion on there work as I have'nt got my Amp Back Yet.

I put a call out to the members but sadly as I have noted no members seem to know or are willing to help with these types of requests for help.

Sorry to bang on but i'm still peed off about the lack of help.

I hope this helps you.

Good luck

John

John,

This kind of situation can be frustrating, especially because the amp has no fault! It is a bit crazy.

On the other hand JLS kept on of my amp for 5 months… They are great but not fast.

Funny you mention HIFi exchange because they could not fix an input selector fault on my E302 and was told the amp was done but Class A repaired it.

I would really like to find a quick and knowledge repairer/restaurer in the Melbourne area so I associate myself to your call.

Just one week of patience for you, have you had a chance to listen to the amp yet?

Yes, Had it for a couple of weeks.

It sounds great thought given it's age (43) it would be wise to get a thorough checkout. It's hard to find someone in Melbourne to send it to. I thought S/net members would be helpful but no such luck, tried Clarke Audio. No response. One in Doncaster who was recommended, not interested and a couple others, no luck. Gary Cawsey sounds promising, if your not rushed l was going to pick it up from Class A and take it to him, but they had it nearly ready to pick up.

You will enjoy the P400 with a nice pre.

It would cost many thousands to better it IMO.

Some of them have a switch, others do require soldering like E-211, E-212, E-213 series.
E-305 uses tabs which makes it easier but I still woudln't recommend switching voltage if you don't have electronics experience

I used to own a E302 for many years and really enjoyed this amp. It brought it back from the EU and had it switched (by a professional) to 240V.

I have been tempted to buy a E305. I was wondering how the new owner likes its sound?

I have actually got an Accuphase P266 and would be looking for someone too in Melbourne. I might contact Gary Cawsey now...

Hi  I have had an Accuphase e303 serviced with Garry Cawsey and he did a great job.
I’ve heard liquid audio is an Accuphase specialist, either of these are a good option

I contacted Liquid Audio for a chat, really interesting and a specialist but he is too busy and does not take interstate work. I need to contact Garry Cawsey. CanI ask you what he did to your E303 when he serviced it?

The P266 amplifier is being shipped so it will take some time. I hope it works but I would like a proper service/restoration. I have no idea of what is needed but I don't necessarily trust 50 years old electrolytic capacitors. It is a fine line, I don't want to spend a fortune and I don't want to change the sound of the amp but I want the amp to be safe to operate and possibly sound better.

Garry put one of his special mains filters in it and cleaned up the circuit boards ie dry solder joints from memory as well as fixing the vu meter lights.
it didn’t appear to have changed the sound of the amp.

The e303 is rock solid and has a totally silent background now.

Greetings from Belfast 🙂 as above I’ve recently picked up an Accuphase p260 power amp for a good price, but the Accuphase pre’s are so expensive.

So far I’ve tried it with - an icon audio la4 valve pre ( a bit bright but I’ve yet to try different valves rather than the Tj full music 6sn7’s that came with it) - an arcam av9 ( pairs quite well, fairly smooth ) an Eva ldr ( not bad but only one input) and a jolida dac Fx mkiii  ( really nice for digital only but I’ve also a modded technics 1210 I want connected)

Has anyone any recommendations for something that will pair up nicely with the older Accuphase amps, it’s class A and sounds more full on with loads of clarity rather than warm like I expected, my speakers are monitor audio gold 300 4g’s with ribbon tweeters which have a similar sound signature, I guess I’m looking something warm to balance things out.

Cheers Marty
