kemp98 Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Any recommended video and audio settings? My AVR volume needs to crank up much higher compared to my previous one.
Jagdpanzer Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 I just dIscover that this player can even play ripped blu ray and DVD ISO files smoothly. BUT ... cannot activate the subtitles
anfieldude Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 I just dIscover that this player can even play ripped blu ray and DVD ISO files smoothly. BUT ... cannot activate the subtitles BD iso?
vikramtiwary Posted September 9, 2012 Posted September 9, 2012 Hi, Sorry to OT a little, I just got this player free with my Sony TV and it's still in the box unopened. Any idea how much I may be able to sell it for? I'm not sure what's the current brand new price... Thanks.
Orixy Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Hi guys, anyone tried playback RMVB files over USB thumbdrive with the S790? Does RMVB still play with the latest 443 firmware?
tree1624705769 Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 How can i play bd iso? Am having problems with some of the bdmv files in AVHD folder, where they dun get recognised as a video file for playback in S790.. make me want to get a media player to solve all my problems.. ???
francis wu Posted September 10, 2012 Author Posted September 10, 2012 Not sure whether it can play BD ISO, best to refer to the manual, it's stated clearly the files that it can recognize!
Guest CASH Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 yup, giraffe! the PQ is superb!!! sound quality it can't deliver. my dvd collection has sprung back into action with this sony player. sound wise, it goes through my onkyo, so it still is bearable.
Jagdpanzer Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Just convert the iso files back to the original bdmv files or DVD files. It works except you cannot activate subtitles and view playback menu. How can i play bd iso? Am having problems with some of the bdmv files in AVHD folder, where they dun get recognised as a video file for playback in S790.. make me want to get a media player to solve all my problems.. ???
tree1624705769 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 thanks for the info, Jagdpanzer it does work.. but i always need subtitles.. :( Dear CASH, does it mean that the sound processing will be handled by your avr when we use hdmi digital out? Am always puzzled by this and do not dare to touch those realtek media players as i had been told before there is a big degrade in sound/ picture quality when using these.. Thanks! EK

EK yup, i should think so that my onkyo does the sound processing.
ballhead Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 here comes the hard truth/wet blanket - no 24p mkv playback, can't play embedded subtitles, oversharpened DVD playback (to the point of artifacts), average audio, and to add insult to the injury, CINAVIA. I with with an oppo and never regretted passing on the s790. For bros who are familiar with photoshop, s790 dvd upscaling is almost like overdoing USM. Yeah the image is sharpened at the cost of artifacts. s790 is very nice bdp at its price point, but i don't find it to be the AV swiss army knife like an oppo.
Guest CASH Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 i believe a price tag of $299 would definitely make it a value for money bluray keep, despite its audio weakness.
lkypeter Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 I saw the RCP on Sony Singapore as $499. Can share where selling $299. Thanks.

tree1624705769 Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 i called sony store almost every other day on the availability when it was first announced in US.. din expect sony to drop the price so fast..
francis wu Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 Frankly, at $299, this BDP is a real bargain. PQ and SQ (via HDMI) on top of the heap. The fact it can also stream video and music is a bonus although in limited file options. In addition, it's ready for 4K. Up sampling to a 4K TV will be a reality end of the year and you can bet it will best the crops of 1080p quality projectors or TVs currently available! If you find the upscaled DVD or BR to be too sharpened and causes artifacts, then it's your current settings that are contributing to this abnormally. In my set up, I don't see these abnormalities and personally, I find the PQ much cleaner and sharper than the Oppo, especially in background and backdrop scenes! Unless my eyes are playing tricks with me, there are no BDP now that can best the 790 on PQ!, IMO :)
cstanxpl Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Can the SBMV settings to see if the DVD video is not so sharpened? Have not tried DVD yet, but BD so far seems better than the older S470 which it replace (and the S470 was more expensive). Only issue is when spinning BD, the whinning sound from the transport is as obvious as the S470 (used to it already). Lucky when watching movies, the audio mask the whinning sound.
francis wu Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 I m referring to the TV or Projector settings! Many people like to up the sharpness level which I find will always contribute to noises and artifacts. Leave it alone!!
ballhead Posted September 11, 2012 Posted September 11, 2012 Bro my only demo of the S790 with DVD upscaling was at Bedok Court... ;) :P Video quality is just as subjective as audio. E.g. I have some photographer friends who are super-duper picky about WB and can detect minute differences. USM is my personal nit-picking area, so yeah oversharpened images will set off the alarms for me. Well one man's meat is another's poison. Glad to see many bros enjoying a super value for money BDP. Everyone benefits in the end when there is competition spurring the companies to churn out their best product. Frankly, at $299, this BDP is a real bargain. PQ and SQ (via HDMI) on top of the heap. francis wu Posted September 11, 2012 Author Posted September 11, 2012 Heng ah, in that case, my eyes are not playing tricks with me! ;D USM if applied correctly will definitely enhance movie viewing especially on DVDs! I have never enjoyed my DVDs so much ever since I bought the 790! :D
