High Definition Video and Audio from All Sources.

The OPPO BDP-105 is designed from the ground up with components optimized for enhanced analog audio performance. The OPPO BDP-105 features an all-new analog audio stage powered by two ESS Sabre32 Reference Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC), balanced (XLR) & unbalanced (RCA) dedicated stereo outputs, a Toroidal linear power supply, and asynchronous USB DAC input. These high-grade components are housed in a rigidly constructed metal chassis and work together to deliver exceptionally detailed and accurate sound quality along with reference quality video.

Features

Uniquely Better:

  • 4K Up-scaling - Enhance the home theater experience with four times the resolution of Full HD 1080p by up-scaling all video sources to 4K (3840 x 2160) output resolution.

  • 2D to 3D Conversion – Take your standard DVD, Blu-ray, and other video content to the next dimension by converting them into 3D with the simple press of a button. The BDP-105 can also adjust the depth and eye convergence levels to suit your personal preference.

  • Dual HDMI Inputs – Connect external devices such as set-top boxes and network streaming devices to take further advantage of the excellent audio and video processing functions by the BDP-105. The BDP-105 offers two HDMI inputs, one on the front and one on the back, and the front HDMI input doubles as an MHL input.

  • USB Asynchronous DAC – By bypassing the low fidelity, poor quality DAC of traditional computer soundcards, the BDP-105 turn any computer into a high performing multi-media source by converting digital audio to analog through the ESS Sabre32 Reference DAC. If your computer can play it, the BDP-105 can convert it to analog.

  • Coaxial/Optical Inputs – For additional convenience and flexibility, the BDP-105 can convert digital signals from cable and satellite boxes, televisions, video-game consoles and other digital transports with coaxial and optical digital outputs to analog.

  • DMP & DMR - Digital Media Player (DMP) and Digital Media Renderer (DMR) features enable wired or wireless access of audio, picture, and video files stored on DLNA-compatible digital media servers such as a computer or network storage device (NAS).

  • SMB/CIFS Access - The BDP-105 comes with an experimental feature that can access video, audio and picture files shared by computers on the local network via the Server Message Block (SMB) or Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol.

  • Headphone Amplifier – For a more intimate listening experience, a pair of headphones can be connected directly to the BDP-105’s built-in headphone amplifiers. The headphone amplifier is connected directly to the ESS Sabre32 Reference DAC and offers a unique performance advantage over standalone headphone amplifiers.

  • Rigid Chassis Construction - Built around a steel chassis, aluminum faceplate, and center-mounted disc loader, the BDP-105 is designed to impress as well as to provide a stable base for the highest quality reproduction of your favorite media.

  • Fanless Architecture – The BDP-105 is passively cooled, allowing it to run both cool and quiet without the need for internal or external fans.

The Oppo comes with a switch behind, make sure you switch it to 230V!

There is also a CD, you pop it in, it whirrs for a couple of seconds and viola! The player is CODE Free for DVDs.

Some quick notes whilst the player is being run-in:

- loading is fast, probably a little faster than the 95

- the player is much higher than the Oppo 95, so much so that the slot in my console won't fit this..

- as you can see from the pics, there are vent slots on top of the player, so that seems to make up for the lack of a fan

- the clicks are still present

- the remote feels more sensitive, but the build quality is still poor compare to other more premium products

- the back of this player is pretty busy, any more slots and inputs and it would almost be a full-fledged AV processor!

The 103 does not come with a disc for region free DVDs. How do you get it to be region free?

mine came with it. You can approach Patrick and audio iconic.

Secrets of Home Theater review.

This is the part the tripped most people:

In order to add the headphone amp and the USB DAC, OPPO made some changes to the design.  The BDP-95's stereo output stacks four DAC channels for each L/R output channel.  The idea of the stacked DAC design is to increase the output current from the DAC so a smaller I/V conversion resistor can be used (a smaller resistor has lower thermal noise).  When OPPO tried to utilize this design in the BDP-105, they found that the performance became worse.  The additional input and output made it impossible to design an optimized PCB layout if they maintained the stacked DAC channels, so a non-stacked DAC channel design was implemented.

In the 105, there is one pair of DACs for the RCA output, one pair for the XLR, and two pairs stacked for the headphone amplifier.  The new configuration minimizes interference and crosstalk.  A higher value I/V resistor (1.2 kOhm compared to 430 Ohms in the BDP-95) had to be used, but by beefing up the power supply and separating the stereo and multi-channel boards, audiophile-grade performance was maintained.

https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-bdp-103/BDP103-firmware-38-1211.aspx

Release date: December 12, 2012

Category: Latest Official Release

Main Version: BDP10X-38-1211

Loader Version: 6U0900 (BDP-103), 7B0600 (BDP-105)

Sub Version: MCU103-05-0916 (BDP-103), MCU105-04-1113 (BDP-105)

1. Resolved the HDMI high bit-rate (HBR) audio loss issue with Anthem MRX 300/500/700 AV Receivers. Customers have reported that when sending DTS-HD MA or Dolby True HD signals in Bitstream mode through HDMI 1 OUT to these Anthem receivers, no audio was detected by Anthem and static noise could be heard on the speakers. This issue has been resolved.

2. Improved audio/video synchronization for disc playback, internet streaming, and external HDMI/MHL inputs. In the previous firmware, customers have been reporting that the sound could be out of sync with the picture. This issue has been improved.

3. Improved media file navigation on USB hard disk or thumb drives. Added Thumbnail View mode for Movie and Music. Customers can press the RED color button to quickly switch between File List mode and Thumbnail View mode. There is also an improvement to the responsiveness achieved by caching some of the media information in an "OPPO_Media_Info" folder on the USB drive. NOTE: for users who prefer that the player not write anything to the USB drive, there is a "Cache Media Info" item in the "Setup Menu" under "Device Setup". We recommend that you set this "Cache Media Info" option to ON and do not delete the "OPPO_Media_Info" folder and its files. This will deliver user experience improvement in media navigation. On the other hand, turning this option OFF can prevent the player from writing to your USB drive, at the cost of slower media file navigation.

4. Added the "Blank HDMI 2" option in the Setup Menu -> Video Setup -> 3D Setting. This allows the player to force HDMI 2 to output a 2D blank screen when HDMI 1 outputs 3D video. Some customers reported that during 3D movie playback, when HDMI 1 was connected to a 3D display and HDMI 2 was connected to a non-3D receiver which in turn is connected to the same 3D display, there was no audio coming from the receiver. This issue has been resolved.

5. Resolved the incorrect aspect ratio (AR) during some user-created media. In the previous firmware the player may have unnecessarily pillarboxed or stretched the video of some user-created media files. This issue has been resolved.

6. Resolved an incompatibility with older Digital Coaxial or Optical receivers where streaming services (such as Netflix, YouTube) produced no audio.

7. Added support for "Rhapsody" online music and "CinemaNow" movie/TV streaming services.

8. Added "Sleep Timer" option in the Setup Menu -> Device Setup. This allows the player to turn itself off after a specific amount of time.

9. Added support for converting Side-by-Side and Top-Bottom formatted MKV into 3D. During the playback of a compatible MKV, press the 3D button on the remote once to turn on the "2D->3D" conversion then press the 3D button again to display the "3D Setting" menu. Select "Side-by-Side" or "Top-Bottom" to match the source to convert the image to 3D.

10. Added the support for DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD sound tracks in MKV files. As with any user-encoded media files, compatibility still depends on the software and techniques used to encode the media files.

11. Added "CD Program Play" function for CD/SACD playback. During the disc playback, press the YELLOW COLOR button to bring the "Program Play" interface. Here you can use the LEFT/RIGHT ARROW button to set a desired playlist.

12. General disc compatibility improvement based on recent and upcoming Blu-ray releases as well as user-submitted disc samples.

Being using it for a while now.

RCA direct out to MF and also digital from SB Touch to DAC to MF.

There are improvement (vs SBT as well as previous OPPO-93 - both direct into MF), but only slightly.

Maybe this is the so-call diminishing return by my standard  :-[ or my speaker linkage is showing up it being the weaker link  :'(

Looking at the output portion. Looks like the dedicated stereo out and front left right out has no significant different in layout. Can we guess/say both outputs will perform similarly in stereo?

what is the purpose of having a HDMI input on the Oppo 105?

Can you connect the PS3 into it and get sound through the Oppo 105's analog outputs?

From the other thread

When using digital coaxial or optical input, the player will support & decode up to Dolby Digital & DTS 5.1. When using HDMI input, the player will support & decode Dolby Digital & DTS, up to 5.1 at 24bit/192kHz or 7.1 at 24bit/96kHz. The player can be used without prepro, and volume can be controlled using the 105's excellent internal volume control (which is implemented directly  via  the ESS Sabre DACs).

Also, you can get the Oppo's scaler to convert regular SD ED 720p and 1080i from yr media player and SCV set top box to full HD or 4k

confirm or not oppo 105 can upscale video materials even from HDMI inputs?

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/transports/high-definition-dvd-players-hd-dvd-blu-ray/oppo-blu-ray-q-a

The two HDMI input ports are all new to these models. Customers have always asked for ways to take further advantage of the excellent audio and video processing functions provided by the OPPO players, and the two HDMI input port answer this request. Users can connect external devices such as set-top boxes and network streaming devices to take advantage of the players’ video processing power. The HDMI inputs are also convenient for small installations such as a bedroom system where an A/V receiver may not be needed.  The front HDMI input port doubles as a Mobile High-definition Link (MHL) input.  Users with MHL-compatible mobile phones and tablets can quickly connect to the player to show video and photo on the TV screen.
