scratchy Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Can anyone recomend a friendly retailer in sydney that will let you audition various high end headphones? After getting an amp/dac for my akg k550s i have been bitten by the bug and would like to try some open ear cans... Thanks folks
DoggieHowser Posted June 16, 2012 Posted June 16, 2012 Too bad you are not in Melbourne http://www.jaben.com.au/pages/about-us I don't know about the Melbourne place but the Singapore unit was a bad place for my wallet
goooobags Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Hi-Fi trader in Newtown has a few AKG and Sennheiser headphones, but I don't know how high end the audition rack is, same with somewhere like Ordio in Bondi Junction is the same I think. Although I would not consider these two places friendly - maybe they don't appreciate that younger people do actually have money to spend on Hi-Fi. There is also an Audio-Technica store in the CBD somewhere, I have never been though so can't tell you what they offer for demo An option would be to ask around for a lend of specific headphones from friendly SNA members, where in Sydney are you located?
Krispy Audio Posted June 17, 2012 Posted June 17, 2012 Scratchy, if you can hold out until Aug 18th, there's a Sydney head-fi meet. Most likely Epping. You won't find a better place to try pretty much every high-end headphone that exists. I'll be there! 1

I bought my amp off nelson, wonderful service. Scratchy, if you can hold out until Aug 18th, there's a Sydney head-fi meet. Most likely Epping. John_A Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 Motor across the 'bridge' to Len Wallis Hifi at Lane Cove. A young bloke there has set up a fantastic headphone system comparator. Works a treat. But beware, in addition to lots of top shelf dynamic headphones to audition, there are a couple of Stax electrostatics. If your will-power is found wanting it could cost you..... As it did me. Be warned!

scratchy Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 Bring your favorite tracks to audition headphones and its sound quality . Should bring CD's rather than ipods, so Dacs can be used?

John_A Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 What did you end up buying? Stax 507 and SRM 600 Limited Edition. Brilliant! Could not be happier with the selection.
Frog Posted August 7, 2012 Posted August 7, 2012 (edited) Oh man, if had the money I'd have done exactly the same. Taking my AKG K702's I ended up desiring the Musical Fidelity M1 HPA (which I don't have the willpower not to buy) and wanting the Sennheiser HD800's - more comfortable, more air, no "in the head" feeling - for some reason nothing else sounded like an upgrade, but the Quad's sounded very musical - they just struggled with something on some of the more complex lo-fi music I listen to (The Roots, especially). Meant to say, you're welcome to listen to anything I have at my place, currently Technics SU-3000 amp or HTX One XL are my sources , but I'm getting a MF M1 HPA this week. Headphones are AKG K240 Studio (for sale) and K702 (not for sale) Edited August 7, 2012 by Frog
