Inquiry through email about FREE AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping to Singapore for this item "Honeywell Long-Life Pure HEPA QuietCare Air Purifier, 17000", link => http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000050AQ5/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER"

Received reply "Upon checking the item from the hyper link you've given, I see that this item isn't  eligible for this shipping option. This is why you're seeing shipping charges that aren't covered in the "AmazonGlobal Saver Discount."

The purifier alone does not qualify for free shipping as you need minimum USD$125. Try topping up with other eligible items (make sure total shipping weight less than 20 lb) and see whether the free shipping option appears. If not just  email them, tell them the problem and they will check the items sitting in your cart. Most likely they will waive for you if 1) total item cost > USD$125 and 2) All sold by Amazon.com and eligible for global shipping and 3) Total shipping weight is <20 lbs.

One reason sometimes you still get shipping charges even if you meet the above criteria is because one of the item is stated to be shipped separately. In this case I believe is this purifier. The system will automatically include shipping charges if one or more items need to be shipped separately.  Email the CSO will solve this problem. I have tried and tested.

maybe you got the "right" CSO  ;D

I try to check out the item with quantity 2 and maybe the combined more than 20 lbs.

That exceeds the weight limit, each item already has a shipping weight of 13.8 pounds.

My 50250 arrived today, but I still have no idea how much power transformer to buy. The manual doesn't say what is the maximum power consumption. I guess I should just get 300W transformer to be safe.

How long did it take to arrive? Normal shipping?

Well let me get mine, then I will post that here. As of now, no issues, and my order has gone through.

No idea why you all are having this trouble.

You are lucky to get the right CSO. If you search under Free Global Saver Shipping, the purifier does not qualify for free shipping to SG.

Yes it did, especially when I ticked the international shipping box.

And it's ahead of schedule...

For those who have received from Amazon, can you verify that you can control the fan speed when hooked up to a 240-110V transformer. I did this with a Honeywell air cleaner years ago and couldn't control the speed. It ran at the same high speed whatever switch position I set. It also seemed to run above the maximum speed.

Nice... Hope my gets here faster too, need a spare one so that I dun have to lug the only one I have around the house. I managed to get my shipping waived too thanks to your tip.  :)

When did you order your purifier & did you use the priority shipping? Ordered mine on Sat & received an email notification that my item was shippped only on Tue morning. Used the tracking feature & the purifier is still going on tour across some US states >:(! Hopefully it will be delivered by this week (est delivery is 1 Jul). Do post your views on the unit should you manage to use it this week.

As for the power consumption of the 50250, it is said to be 50w (low), 120w (medium) and 170w (high) according to this reviewer in Amazon (para 7) & also this review of the unit (under 50250 Filter Monitoring section).

stepdown trans only 70% efficiency , so do your maths ,it should operate at juat abit warm not hot.

Based on Bro Econav's advice, I decided to get a 300W transformer to be on the safe side. Went to Mustafa but they were out of stock on the 300W so bought 1 from SLT instead. But rather than a Newstar, I bought another brand "Super" which seems more well-built. The mains cable is thicker & it uses a 3-pin plug (not sure if it's really "earthed" though). It also auto detect & switch between 110w & 220w & has it own "On/Off" switch. Finally the socket on the transformer itself is the "universal" sort allowing different types of plugs to be plugged in (instead of the 3-pin US type found on the Newstar) & is hence more versatile. Hopefully it works well & will last when used continuously for a couple of hours every day.

Yes, can switch between 3 modes, low, medium & high.

That's good. Does your transformer also convert 50 Hz to 60 Hz? I always attributed the problem to it being a motorized 60 Hz device being run at 50 Hz and overheating. It did run for a few years before dying.

I doubt so. Changing frequency is complicated/expensive process.

Running at 50Hz would result in approximately 20% reduction in motor rotation so it's less likely to overheat. But the air flow would definitely be affected.

Overheating of a device designed for 60Hz but running on 50Hz is not related to the heat generated by the device based on the speed the device is running.

After gathering the tips of the bros here, I too went ahead to order the Honeywell 17000 and 3x HRF-AP1 pre-filter to make up to around US$128.  The free shipping is not automatic but I eventually got it, so thought of sharing the experience here.

In total, I contacted the CSO 3 times via email.  The first two replies by the CSO were very general.  Something like you must click the free shipping option when checking out, or please call Amazon so that they can solve the problem, etc.

My third email to them, I listed down that my purchase fulfil the criteria for free shipping, i.e.

- total cost >US$125

- total weight < 20lbs (air purifier + filters)

- merchant: Amazon.com

(the only unknown is whether the size qualifies or not, so I leave that out)

AND, I also suggested to the CSO why not I check out the items and he refunds me the shipping cost later.  To my delight, the CSO agreed! :)

That's how I get my free shipping done.  Hope it benefits others who would like to order.

My honeywell 17000 just shipped.  :D Ordered on Jun22nd and they managed to send it out today despite saying 3-5 weeks wait. Only glitch is that it's being sent by i-parcel which seems to be having issues delivering here...

Now then I see this thread, should have order from Amazon direct. ;)

Actually it's the opposite. Strange, but if you know electricity, there will be 20% higher current going through. Certainly my Honeywell 110V air cleaner seemed to run at max (or over) no matter where I set the fan speed. Here is a reply from a forum that may be instructive:

A couple of basics. A device is designed to draw a certain amount of current to operate which is proportional to the impedance (ie-resistance) of the circuit. In a device like a transformer or motor, the impedance is inductive in nature. In laymans terms, the impedance (or opposition) to the current flow is from the magnetically inductive field created by the windings, not by the physical resistance of the copper wire. This impedance is directly proportional to the frequency. (Something like 2 x pi x inductance in Henry's x frequency equals the impedance in ohms if anyone really cares.)

Anyway, if you plug a 50 hz device into a 60 hz circuit, the frequency is higher than the unit was designed for. Therefore, the impedance is greater and there is less current flow and it operates a little cooler.

The reverse is just the opposite. A 60 hz device in a 50 hz circuit has a lower impedance, draws more current, and operates hotter (if it doesn't burn up altogether).

Again, I ran the 110V Honeywell for many years on a transformer before it eventually died. However I thought people should know as there is probably a slight risk of fire and they should probably run it on the lowest fan setting.

Has anyone looked at Australia or HK to buy the filters by the time you mucked around with the extra cost of transformers and throw in a potential fire risk , it might work out better buying form an Oz or HK distributor both 240v and pay for the shipping?  I bought my outdoor fan from Australia, shipped over without any problems.

Yesterday received 2 Honeywell + 1x500W step down transformer from Amazon.  Total US$125.99  ;D Free shipment to SGP + take ~ 1 week.

Buy another step down transformer (200W) from Homefix - S$52 (I know, more Xpensive than the 500W from Amazon ::)

The 2 small purifiers are meant for the bedrooms for my kids.

Guess  what happen just now  :'( :-\ :-X :-[

My wife plug in one of the honeywell into 230Vac  :o :( >:(

Now I've one Purifier short, but 1 set of spare filter + 1 unit of spare 500W step down transformer  ::) ::) ::)

OMG. That's so unfortunate bro :(

What model is this? Looks very small.

Any feedback on the honeywell? Noise level at night especially..
