Hi Again

Hmmm, this is really strange. The knobs actually pull off and then you get access to the nuts that secure the pots and there seal. Try tightening them.

Where are you located - happy to do a fix?

Regards

Located in Bentleigh, VIC. Will give the nut tightening a go tomorrow after work (left speaker is worse than the right, so could be this?) - will report back.

That's great after sales service for a speaker no longer in production.

Good on you Chucky!

Can't say it's helped. May give you a call tomorrow sometime (or give me a call on xxxxxxxxxx when you're free) regarding trying to sort this out.

Daniel I've deleted your phone number as it isn't wise to post this on a public site. I suggest that you PM chucky3042

Hi All

Just noticed today while re arranging our office that we found a bunch of the front vertical decorative strips for the dragons. If anyone has damaged ones please contact me and I am happy to give them away to a good home!

I had a pair once. Very nice. Just missed playing with various power amps.

As I was told from the guy who designed them:

(It doesn't matter what power amp you use or how expensive it is) it still has to go via the inbuilt amp(s).???

Only the pre amp(s) will make a difference.

panic!

Or, just pull them apart and DIY.

Charlie has been extremely helpful with instructions.

Here's mine from last night...

I fixed loose RCA sockets on the back of one speaker and located a quiet "fizzing" sound on the stator where the film sits a bit too close to the stator bars. Fix planned for this over the weekend.

While I was there, I soldered in a much better cable (heavier, multi-guage, OFC, etc) between the back of the RCA sockets and the audio board they feed to, and dressed the rest of the wiring to neaten the whole lot up. I also found a few other things that could be done to make these better (mostly simple stuff like decent quality cabling to replace the cheap stuff used by the Chinese factory) but it involves pulling the board out of the triangular chimney and that's a mission for another day maybe.

These speakers really are quite amazing though straight from my Bursoned XA5ES cd player. I'm going to be very happy with them as they are now so will probably leave further modifications out of the picture. I'll source a nice valve pre and that's it really.

I decided to pull the speakers apart again tonight.

I decided to replace the wiring from the board to the stators. I had some spare Kimber 8TC that I split and silver soldered in a straight run to the stator terminals.

This replaced the factory wiring which was very very light weight and with a press fit connector in the line just to mess things up a little more. .

Result?

Huge improvement in almost every respect. Most noticeable straight away was a cleaner, purer upper mid and treble (not as much glare now) and performers are better defined in their own space with greater depth of field.

Well worth the time and effort. Each speaker took about 45 minutes to do.

Next up, the speakers' preamp isolation transformers perhaps. Word has it that for VERY little cost ($50 <), this can yield significant results.

I had Charlie "Go To Town" on my set a few years back. Upgraded Power Supplies, Isolation Transformers. Re- wired with silver litz, Balanced with Xlr's, worthwhile improvement.

Sound superb with high quality Turntable, Valve Phono, Valve Pre-Amp, good quality Cabling.
