Guest Danthuyer Posted December 23, 2005 Posted December 23, 2005 1.4.2 solves the sorting issue FINALLY!!!!! other than that has anyone found any good hacks for the box to add new codec's etc??
ommm Posted December 25, 2005 Posted December 25, 2005 Hi I Love my mediagate 35!!! However I'm having a few problems getting some AVI's to play has anyone else been having this problem? It tells me that it's an invalid format.... I have it connected through the LAN Thanks
MikeGus Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 I have a MG35 that works great. I cannot figure out how to upgrade the firmware. I downloaded the file from airlinktech and put it on the internal HDD in the root. The instruction book say's to boot up the unit and move to upgrade file. I don't see the file anywhere. Do I need to rename it to something or put it in aspecial folder? Thanks so much. Mike
budgiebottom Posted January 20, 2006 Posted January 20, 2006 Hi All, I am seriously thinking about buying a AL-tech MG35, it seems to do all that I want, except for one thing: Can you use it as a network storage device? i.e. Like this product: Linksys NSLU2 (http://www1.linksys.com/products/product.asp?prid=640) Does anyone know if the MG35 runs linux? Is it hackable? i.e. are their people out there offering mods for it. Cheers.

Mike When i download the latest firmware i usualy dump the single file into the root directory of the Mediagate, then plug it back into my TV, fire it up, navigate to the file (go through "Movies" tab) and then play the file as if it were a movie... that easy E.T.
akroehn Posted March 3, 2006 Posted March 3, 2006 Update: 1.4.2 fixes nearly all my problems, except some (most) of the xvids and divx movies I encode need the virtualdubmod fix as posted by skymatrix (thanks!! ). For those of you having trouble downloading the firmware, try getting it from the www.mediagate.co.kr site instead of the www.airlinktek.com site - don't know if its any different, but might be worth a shot incase the files are different (ie one or the other is corrupt or something). For people asking about storage - no you can't access the MG35 on the network. The network port is only for streaming from a PC, your PC cannot see the MG35 at all (pity). The only way for your PC to see the MG35 is to use USB. Maybe they can add this functionality with firmware, but maybe not.
blathermouth Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Just saw an MG35 and was keen to get one. On reading through all your postings here, I was disappointed to hear that it is not visible from the PC's on the network, but I can live with that I suppose. What concerned me a bit more was the mention of unplayable xvid's. This would be my primary purpose for it. I don't create my own xvid's and don't really want to get into trying to fix them up to watch them. Currently I play them from my PC with S-Video and Audio going from my ATI All-In-Wonder card to the TV and Stereo. Can anyone provide any feedback on the % of xvid files "commonly found in the wild" that don't play on the MG35? Thanks!
bitbandit Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 Hey - I could not figure this out from the docs - is the IDE interface offered a limited IDE implementation? i.e. can it only handle one device instead of (the normal) four? Space notwithstanding, has anyone contemplated sticking another IDE device onto the MG35 in addition to the drive? Like a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM? Hello from Toronto.
Mike.L Posted March 24, 2006 Author Posted March 24, 2006 The main issue would be a driver for the new hardware, since the mediagate is only driven by simple firmware (that struggles to do the required job) it would need a total rewrite to adopt a second device that isnt a hard drive. Im sure it cant cope with two hard drives let alone differing devices. Unless of course you can rewrite firmware.
bitbandit Posted March 24, 2006 Posted March 24, 2006 Ya - you're right - I will just stick with the 300GB or how much ever IDE I can cram into one HD and enjoy the show - not get greedy.. I had an interesting (wild) idea about sticking a CD/DVD-ROM onto a network-storage device (like the Linksys XXX) and see whether the MG35 can see it as a netbios share over the network..... BTW, some guys on eBay (ewaggle) are selling the device with the HD already in (300GB) for around 300$ US and another $20 for postage, but that is only to US and Canada. In Canada, I picked mine up for $185 Canadian. 300GB HD will set me back another $130.
bitbandit Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Well - I got the MG35 - and it is set up. The network piece was a breeze to set up. Still figuring out what NDAS will do for me (it was off) - The firmware version says 1.4.3.. The USB to HDD piece is a lot more *exciting* - just cannot get it to work - I have plowed through 7 of my HDDs and none of them are talking to the PC - but if I put in a disk with material on it, I can access it and play it in stand-alone mode... :-x Can someone tell me if there are any gotchas for the USB piece... is there any order to plugging the MG35 in? SHould the unit be off before I plug in? DOes it matter? :-x Oh - I almost forgot - I am finding the startup a bit slow... like most of a minute... OK - so has anyone managed to get NDAS working? I am finding the instructions a bit lacking here... I fired off an email to the chaps at HQ to see if they can help. It says that I should be able to find the NDAS IDs on the bottom of the package, but there are a heap of numbers there, none of which add up to the 20-chars that I am told I need... :?
Guest Bigrig Posted March 28, 2006 Posted March 28, 2006 NDAS is written by XImeta for there own devices so when they talk about the device ID and write key it is on there devices not ALTechs devices the convert there mac address of the device to the 20 digit code and write key some how I still waiting for a reply back from XImeta about how to get the codes :???: :???:
bitbandit Posted March 29, 2006 Posted March 29, 2006 Good idea, Bigrig - I think that the XiMeta route might be the better way to go. I am already lowering my expectations of customer service from these chaps at Mediagate. I am also wondering - what is the plan for when we have to support new codecs? Do we have to get a new firmware file from them? And I believe that they are running some embedded Linux on the MG35 - but does anyone know which one? And (as someone has already asked) - is it hackable?

I had a Linux guru have a crack at my MG-35 and his comment was that nothing's open and it's pretty much locked down. The new NDAS option ($$) and firmware may fix/open it up a lot more.
