petetherock Posted April 2, 2016 Author Posted April 2, 2016 IMO, we will see 4k players on the local scene closer to X Mas.. we tend to be slower in the uptake. Even now, players are not readily available in Europe or Australia, so I think it will be a while before it comes here. The dearth of titles locally is also an indicator that it won't come that soon. But the 4k TV makers will be keen to push for this, so I am thinking after the next CEDIA / CES, we will see some action on the home front. Thank you bro Audio and Jeff for sharing. Hopefully there will be some deals over Black Friday..
petetherock Posted April 2, 2016 Author Posted April 2, 2016 You should trial Smart DNS and give it a go. I finally fixed that DNS Unlocker issue, so installing new stuff isn't really attractive for me.. in fact I am quite paranoid about IT stuff...believe it or not :)
htfreak Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Given that my 4K OLED display is still some months out, just wondering if there are any Bros already equipped with a 4K HDR display (preferably 65 inch and above) keen to volunteer their place for a XP Pow-Wow and I can bring my 4K player and discs over for fellow members to experience UHD Blu-ray in the flesh and decide for themselves if it's hoopla or something to really look forward to.
Guest CASH Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 I have a 79" LG ub980t 4K tv. U can bring it over for demo session for bros! Hehehe!!!!! But I dunno if its HDR capable. I believe my Onkyo tzr900 avr is hdr capable.
Guest CASH Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 forgot to add, I am using the Oppo 103D bluray player too. one more thing to add or bring along, would be the higher spec'd HDMI cable too... that one I don't have yet...

I believe my Onkyo tzr900 avr is hdr capable. Unfortunately your LG does not support HDR playback even though your receiver does. Let's see if there are any other bros coming forward especially those having the Samsung JS9xxx series, Sony X940 before we decide as the key enticing feature in BD-UHD for me is actually HDR with 4K resolution being a secondary consideration.
Guest CASH Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 alamak!!! anyone wanna buy a 4K 79" LG UB980T?? No HDR!!! Damn!! Hehehehehe!!! ;D
Audio Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I know this is anti-climax but the truth is the truth. Blu Ray looks like DVD on the UHD-K8500. No wonder I complained about "Spectre"and just 2 nights ago, I got a shock playing The Hateful Eight". PQ was soft, the trees in the snowy scene looks soft. This is playing the UHD-K8500 connected to the projector with a 2M certified 18GHz HDMI cable. I transferred the disc to my Denon DVD-A1UD, playing back thru a 15M HDMI, ah, now, the picture looks amazing.....and I watched the whole movie thereafter, impressed with this movie's PQ and story. Obviously, after the movie, I went to confirmed my finding by playing the BR disc on the Samsung player once again, yes, it fared worse. This is the reason why I am not impressed with this Samsung player and could not comment on the performance of 4K UHD disc after being with the player for 2 weeks, we need a better player. My advice to all is to skip this player and look forward to the next one. (Audio)
Guest durianlover88 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Panasonic UB900 - when are u coming? Specifically on TV, I was reading this for HDR: http://coloriq.com/better-together-combining-hdr-and-quantum-dots/ Mine is LG 65-UF860T - supports Quantum Dot/WCG, released Q3 last year. Based on the article should be able to support both HDR versions. I must say I really like the vibrant Colour. Happy eberytime when I on the TV for HD broadcasts or BR playback. Hopefully the HDR playback on 4K BR player will be a great one :)

Based on what I have read, all LG 2015 offerings can only support the Open Standard HDR10 which the current batch of 4K BD's releases support. The other competing standard is the Dolby Vision std which currently some mfgs like Vizio and LG support in their 2016 TV's offerings. The DV standard is gaining strength among streaming providers like Netflix and Vudu. Unfortunately DV support is hardware based and cannot be software upgraded. Hence, it's likely your UF860T cannot be upgraded to support Dolby Vision. There is a 3rd std being worked on by BBC and there's talk that software upgrade to support this may be possible.
petetherock Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 Bro Audio: Is it some setting, or cable? Otherwise you are right, it will be a disappointment if it fairs worse than a typical 1.4HDMI Full HD player..
htfreak Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Audio, try fiddling around with the Deep Color setting on the 4K player. Have read somewhere that this setting creates unforeseen quality results with certain display devices when playing back BD titles.

I'm glad I didn't get the samsung k8500 after reading less than stellar reviews on the PQ. I will reserve my comments on the new Penny 4k player despite some positive reviews from a handful. desray Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Since we are touching on HDR and it's 2 standards, SMPTE HDR 10 and dolby's very own Dolby Vision. For those confused as to how to select a 4K UHD TV that supports HDR, look out for the logo that says Ultra HD Premium. HDR 10 is the baseline standard for all HDR content. Like what Jeff Ong mentioned, For Dolby Vision to work as advertised, it requires the the player to have Dolby Vision. Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Guest durianlover88 Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I think HDR10 should be good to last a Long while...at least enjoy the 4K UHD BRs first until Dolby Vision or BBC other standards comes about....esp if UHD BR only bundles HDR10 for a Long while...just coming from practical point of view unless want to future proof or dun mind waiting and waiting (for a white Xmas) Last night I watched Coraline again...wow...cannot imagine if HDR what will happen...at one stage the black and white display had my eyes almost blinded....if with HDR10 or Dolby Vision increased nits to few thousand....Wai Sai!!!
Doggie Howser Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 So even Sony's laser 4K will be obsolete? cos no Dolby Vision HDR?
desray Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 So even Sony's laser 4K will be obsolete? cos no Dolby Vision HDR? In a way, you are not wrong as I dun recall seeing Dolby Vision as part of the HDR package. But having say that, using laser as the light source, it will have plenty of light output to take advantage of Dolby Vision imo. The thing with Dolby Vision is that you require a hardware decoder on board the display (in this case VW5000ES) to make it work. Dolby Vision can hit as high as 12bit and some have claimed that the PQ between intra-scenes have better dynamic range between whitest white and blackest black. Unless of course, Sony is gonna offer an hardware upgrade in the near future... Dolby Vision is definitely a "force" to be reckoned with since Netflix and Vudu (streaming companies) already offering Dolby Vision for its movies. But for now, I think HDR10 should be enough to make everyone saying , "WoW!"...
petetherock Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 Heady days of early adopters... not everything is worked out yet... thanks for trying it bros.. I don't think it's a total loss. It's quite affordable, and if nothing else, it plays DVDs, BRs and 4k, albeit not to it's best..
htfreak Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Wah piang you guys think too much lah.. What's S$6xx to enjoy 4K UHD playback for at least 6 to 9 months before Oppo get their act together and release their first 4K player. I'm already thankful that the discs only cost US$29.99 when they could have been priced at the $39.99 mark or higher. For now, I'm only investing in discs that are crafted from a 4K DI at the minimum. Now I'm just hopeful that LG release their 2016 OLED G6/E6 within the next month or so.

I read in one of the AVS forum thread that major players like Sony, Panny and Samsung did not adopt DV support because Dolby packages DV as a total video processing solution which would render whatever custom video processing that these players have worked on over the years moot. Hence, it's possible we may not see DV support for these 3 players at all if this speculation was true.

Dolby is really an enigma, I thought Dolby is also the one or part of the team in SMPTE that help develop the HDR 10? If so, why bother to even come up with its very own competing HDR format, the Dolby Vision when they could continue to make HDR 10 into a better format? Wouldn't it be IN Dolby's best interest to make HDR 10 work? I say, Dolby has been greedy and wanted the "plate' that holds the entire pie. Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

htfreak Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Here's the thread that I was referring to earlier about Dolby Vision.. pretty intense discussion going on there.. http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-lcd-flat-panel-displays/2377090-real-reason-sony-samsung-aren-t-using-dolby-vision.html
petetherock Posted April 3, 2016 Author Posted April 3, 2016 Any summary? What do we need to really get 4k going? You are one of the pioneers here, quietly trying out new like, along with bro Audio!
