Ooogh Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 I can certainly understand that some of the thick modern finishes are not to peoples liking and that they may effect the tonal qualities of an instrument. Using old lacquers may well give a better tone , feel and playability, with the associated problems of fracturing over time. However paying a load of cash to take a perfectly good guitar and make it look abused is the stupidest idea I have ever heard of. I can bash a guitar against a post , let it roll around the back of the car while I play Colin McRea rally and pour beer over it all for free!

I remember way back in the day when Mark Evens played Bass in AC/DC, they had a new roadie and he decided to clean Marks Bass. Big mistake as Mark had never cleaned it since he got it, and like a Bikers Colours, wanted it to show all the beer and scotch & Coke, as well as all the bumps and scratches it had gained over the years. 1 1
oztheatre Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 This guitar.. Vai is a visionary.. wonder how many of these they'll make for under 100k? Love the steampunk design. It has a 12 string harp plus a dragonizer and a climax regulator which we all need https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46qjDJ0lLdE @Tweaky Imagine restringing this one
oztheatre Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 His best interview of all time I think, now he's settle down a bit more... Never really liked violin on the geetar but he's an interesting character and his clean picking is something to behold! The scalloped guitar neck is interesting, he says 'you can literally grab the note by the balls' 1

Gregg Froman Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 (edited) I have a Fender Custom Shop David Gilmour Stratocaster. that is almost as new condition. Fender also sells the Relic'd Version for about $5000 more! Stupid..... Edited November 21, 2023 by Gregg Froman 2
Tweaky Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 (edited) The guys from Andertons Music shop in the UK recently flew over to the USA and did a tour of both the main Gibson factory, and the Custom shop. I've yet to watch the video on the main factory, but I did learn two things I never knew before from the Custom shop video. 1] The tenon joint on the necks, used to attach them to the bodies, is twice as big on Custom shop guitars as the one on standard instruments. 2]They make and finish the fret boards entirely [as in inlays and frets] before they glue them to the necks. What I want to know is, Who is buying all these Les Pauls ? There must be two for every man, woman and child on the planet by now. Edited November 21, 2023 by Tweaky 1
Tweaky Posted November 21, 2023 Posted November 21, 2023 (edited) Looks like Mark Knopfler is having a clean out like Clapton and Gilmour before him , his guitar collection has been listed at a Christie's auction, some of the main ones listed below.......I'd LOVE to own that Natural coloured 1958 ES-335 https://www.christies.com/en/auction/the-mark-knopfler-guitar-collection-21929-cks The money is going to charity apparently.....I'm guessing it's a TAX thing in the end. I wonder how much his original 59 Les Paul will go for, probably more than the one that has been on Ebay and Reverb for months [They are asking US 900,000.....They are Dreaming], besides,as if anybody is going to spend that kind of money for a guitar off Ebay or Reverb ] There are a few for sale asking a lot less than that. https://reverb.com/au/p/gibson-les-paul-standard-burst-1958-1960 Edited November 21, 2023 by Tweaky 2
Ooogh Posted November 22, 2023 Posted November 22, 2023 I have a lot of time for Mark Knopfler. Gracious and humble , a true musician , not a rock star. Not a bad guitarist either. 1

But he never looked like he enjoyed being famous, just loved to play. He's a cool cat! He and Jeff Beck, no pick at all. 1

I did for some time lament his choice of musical output in his 2nd phase of career, post DS. I loved what he was doing of course, but felt he had a lot more to give, while he it seemed was content wading calmer waters.

All his gear was just there. Man, a sight to behold. Cheers, Alberto 2
Tweaky Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 oztheatre You should checkout the Arturia website while they have their Black Friday sale on, especially since you said you have one of their hardware synths, and a few software ones as well, as since you have bought something from them before, you could be in for a BIG surprise as I just got, RE: Massive discounts. I logged into my account and saw they had the PIGMENTS synth discounted from US$199 to US$99, I though why not, so I added it to my cart. https://www.arturia.com/products#software-instruments,software-instruments-effects I started looking around the site to see what else was discounted, but forgot what the price was of Pigments, so clicked on my cart to check. When I checked the cart I saw I had got a further discount, now it was only US$49.......UMMM, I'm thinking that's interesting, I'll see if I add anything else to the cart I'll get a further discount on that as well, I can always remove it from the cart. So I added the FX4 collection, this is usually US$499, the Black Friday discount has it showing for US$249, but when I checked my cart again, it was only costing me US$69 , I'm like WTF ! that's for 30 PRO level plugins @ AUS $3.50 each. It stayed in the cart. https://www.arturia.com/products/software-effects/fx-collection/overview Review below. https://musictech.com/reviews/plug-ins/arturia-fx-collection-4-review/ The only things that I have found that are not getting this same discount when put in your cart are items from the SOUNDS section, which are preset packs. 2
Jake Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 The Arturia plugins are excellent. I have used Pigments quite a lot, it's an amazing synth.

I'm only starting to realize this, TBH I think I should have started with Pigments, and then got the V collection, as I would have a lot better idea on what I was doing with all those vintage synths. The video below is a good example on how Pigments basically teaches you about synthesis while you are using it. Arturia have a new synth listed on their website, the MINIFREAK V, how it differs from Pigments ? and if it is worth getting ....after listening to some of the demo sounds, probably not for me. https://www.arturia.com/products/software-instruments/minifreak-v/overview They also have a new FREE synth, which is basically a very cut down version of Analog Lab 5, called Analog Play. https://www.arturia.com/products/software-instruments/analoglab/free It more of a introductory taste of what you can do if you have the V collection, and use Analog Lab 5 to pull sounds from whichever, and how many of the 30+ different instruments included in it. [Although they are using samples from the Augmented series in the Analog Play demo, which is NOT included in the V collection , which I think is a bit deceptive, as most people wouldn't know that they would be up for the cost of buying those 4 as well] Analog lab versions compared below. https://www.arturia.com/products/software-instruments/analoglab/compareversions TBH I can't really think of much else ARTURIA could add to the V collection, so I think they are concentrating more on making new types of virtual synths. On a different note, one of my favorite YouTube channel is Guy Michelmore, he's extremely knowledgeable, funny and a great teacher, especially if you want to dip your toes into composing for Film etc. His latest video posted today is showing examples of writing music with instruments that are currently FREE or due to Black Friday 2023 sales, very cheap. Well worth watching. Edited November 25, 2023 by Tweaky 1
Jake Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 Loopop is a great channel, thanks for reminding me as I have not checked in on his videos for a while now.

So do they just email the software link or do you get actual media? You first need to sign in to the ARTURIA site using the same email address and password you used when you bought your previous stuff from them. Once logged in I'd click on the My Products, which will show everything you have previously bought. If nothing is showing you won't be getting any further discount from the already showing discounted price. Assuming that something is showing in My Products, go back to the main page and then go to the then look at the products you want to get, select them [noting the Black Friday discounted price listed next to them] a put them in your cart. Once the cart notifies you that there is something in it [Red 1], click on the cart icon to see the item, the price should be the same as the first discounted one you saw, BUT, if you scroll down, there should have been additional discount applied showing what you will actually pay. The thing is, I don't know how this additional discounting works. Does it still work if you have only previously bought a few Arturia products ? Or have you have need to have bought something like the V collection before? I guess you'll find out soon enough, hopefully with a positive result. This doesn't apply to all products, the ones that don't are the new ACID V [303 drum clone] new MINI FREAK synth [None of the Augmented series Instruments - Brass/Strings/Voices/Grand Piano] or any of the preset packs in the SOUNDS section. You should have the The Arturia Software Center (ASC) installed on your PC you have your Arturia soft-syths on. I'd open that up and check whats listed. Anyway, once you have ordered and paid for something, you will get emails from Arturia saying the transaction has gone through, and how to go about downloading and installing them. Easy Peasy if you have the The Arturia Software Center (ASC), as the new items will now appear under the Your Products section one you click on it, then its just a matter of clicking on install, as the registration number for the software should be appearing next to the listed new software. Pigments doesn't take long to download and install. The FX4 collection takes a while as its in 11 different downloads, none of them huge thankfully [I think the whole FX4 collection is around 3.8GB ] 1

Tweaky Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 If you ever wondered just how close emulated soft synth sound to the real thing, check out these two short videos of some of the synths in the Arturia V collection [Or available to be bought separately ]
