LogicprObe Posted June 4, 2024 Posted June 4, 2024 I can't recall what I paid for mine but it had a bent machine head where the girl had dropped it or something. It was one or two hundred about 6 or 7 years ago. I really should chase up Yamaha for a replacement. Keen to see the pics tomorrow! 2

I bought a DIY KIT version of this bass several years ago that I still haven't built About 3 years ago I had a little lotto win and got a Yamaha BB434 they had on special. I like Yamaha Basses more than their electric guitars 3
LogicprObe Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 My Yamaha 'Strat' is the only Strat I like playing!

I find the fretboard radius on most of their guitars too flat for my liking, I still prefer a Yamaha over a Ibanez though, their necks are dead flat and really skinny....to each their own. I like the curvature of a 7.25" Radius neck on a Strat or Tele, it follows the natural curve of your finger as it lays across the fretboard. Gibson necks tend to be a bit wider, and I don't think a 7.25" radius would work as well [not that they have ever made one ] which is why they have stuck with a 12" radius. 1

In the early 70's, I bought my SG from Harry Landis in Sydney.........he had the Gibson exclusive. I bought it on the old 'hire purchase scheme' and my mother had to go guarantor. It is the thin neck one that I have (or others) broken three times. Everyone who has played it.............wants to buy it. Should I get it cremated with me or flog it off?

I remember Harry Landis in Park St near Town Hall, I used to stare / drool at the guitars in the windows. I bought my first little Sansui HiFi system from Park St HiFi a few doors down when I was 16, I put it on Lay-by and paid it off over about 2 1/2 months. Keep your SG, you'll regret letting it go as soon as it goes out the front door. I had my TOKAI MIJ SG out yesterday, first time in a long while. 2
betocool Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 I built an SG once a few years back out of scrap wood, as a practice build before getting onto another guitar... I never had an SG before. I was surprised how comfy and light it is. Only thing I'll change next time is the jack in the front instead of the side, that thing bothers me when I'm sitting. It's the one I play most at home these days. Cheers, Alberto 1

Cheers, Alberto The S.G. is a strangely under rated guitar, unless somebody is a mad AC/DC fan, the S.G. doesn't even seem to enter the minds of guitarists as a option. I've got a guitar rack that holds 7 guitars, which used to be loaded with a S.G., 2 X Strats, Tele, Gibson ES 347, a Gibson Hummingbird and K.Yari Acoustic. I can''t remember anybody ever going to reach for the S.G. [As a first choice] when other guitarists came around, it's always been treated as the perpetual wall flower. The only CON, if you could call it that, is that a S.G.'s neck tends to have your left hand land naturally at around the 11th to 15th fret, where most other guitars it's around the 3rd to 6th, which some people just don't like. Also a S.G. doesn't "Naturally" have the beefer bottom end, and slightly more brilliant high's of a Les Paul. But than only by comparison. Add a small EQ pedal, and use it judiciously with a S.G. and you'd have to be a long time guitar player, and tone connoisseur to really being able to differentiate a LP from a S.G. if both are fitted with Gibson P.A.F pickups S.G.'s seem more balanced across the frequency range, which can also makes it usable for Jazz if you string it up with a wound G string and dial the neck pickup tone knob down. Cheaper, Lighter, better fret access and more versatile than a lot of other guitars, it's a pity more people don't realize the S.G's virtues . But then again, it took me a few decades before I realized it myself........better late than never. 2

Every time I try one I hate the way it feels. The neck dive alone is enough to put me off. Like a lot of Gibsons it's also waaaaaay too expensive for how it's constructed. 1

Like a lot of Gibsons it's also waaaaaay too expensive for how it's constructed. I agree , neck dive can be a problem, but some suffer it more than others, and the same can be said for S.G.'s made by manufacturers other than Gibson. The price of new Gibson's have now gone from rude, to totally ridiculous, even more so in Australia given the lousy exchange rate. They are trading off their history.......but for how much longer ? ........the guitar market is flooded, and people rightly don't see the value in paying the asking price, especially when seeing the quality of guitars being made available for less than half, even a third of Gibsons asking price. They have always been overpriced for what they are in the value of materials used since the mid 80's, the price seemed to take a huge hike across the board once they closed the factory in Kalamazoo for good. That's why I bought a made in Japan TOKAI S.G. The only real reason people still buy Gibson's is that they keep a larger percentage of their resale value compared to other brands, but even that is slipping since there are SO MANY 2nd hand Gibsons in the market, just look at Reverb or Ebay, let alone those traded in a guitar shops 2
LogicprObe Posted June 17, 2024 Posted June 17, 2024 (edited) I never noticed any neck dive (I had to look it up!)........but mine a thin neck model so maybe it doesn't suffer it. Oh...........there's a whole SG forum I came across years ago...... https://www.everythingsg.com/forums/gibson-sg.14/ There's quite a few obsessives and diehards there! Seems a good choice seeing it has active EQ on the amp, better there than having active EQ on the bass itself ,chewing up 9 volt batteries at $6 a pop.
Batty Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 It is smaller than I imagined, no need to worry about noise, I will be using my headphones for a while yet.

I got a Fender Rumble 100 and while it's a great practice combo, with the 12" driver, it's also fine for most of the gigs that I do. 1

Tweaky Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Positive Grid are releasing the SPARK V 2 on August 1 They are drip feeding the new features of the new amp day by Day, so far they have added 1] A Looper [ They would have had to have upped the amps internal processing power to include the Looper, that's why they could never add one before with a software update ] 2] From the pictures, it looks like they have made a large rechargeable battery [like a cordless drill type] that can be used to be inserted under the amp, ideal for buskers. 3] All New H.D, Tone Engine, with now more internal processing power this is not surprising, what it contains though might be. 4] SPARK A.I. which no info is yet released 5] Upgraded Design- looks like they have change the Amps control layout. https://www.positivegrid.com/products/spark-2 If you are already a Spark amp owner, and have registered your product, you will be in the running to win a Nuno Bettencourt Signature Washburn Guitar. With a more powerful internal processing, and the rechargeable battery, I imagine the V 2 might be quite a bit more expensive than the original. Although I suspect that you might be able to order the V 2 without the battery, which would obviously lower the cost.
