Lim Yee Wei Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 I am an old man who is out of touch with technologies Was playing CD and friend asked why I still play CD when everyone is streaming their music or playing MP3 Can anyone recommend a simple streaming setup that I can connect to my amp and speakers? Doggie Howser Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 keep playing CDs. No need to change a good thing unless you really want a change. Getting the same kind of quality on a streaming is IMHO not a trivial exercise. a. getting a good quality streamer means good PSU, good analogue or digital outputs etc. b. backing up yr library of music and maintaining some form of data recovery option c. making sure it can play DSD/SACD rips would require a higher end player. If you just want to start: BlueSound Node 2 - streams from USB or internet BlueSound Vault 2 - adds a HDD and an EAC CD ripper built in These have a decent NAD designed DAC but both benefit from external DACs. Next up would be the Lumin - which handles DSD as well.
tane0019 Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 Simple All-In-One (ie inclusive of HDD+DAC built-in) solutions:- (ie don't need NAS or separate DAC or both) AURALiC ALTAIR http://support.auralic.com/hc/en-us/articles/222506447-Product-Specification BLUESOUND VAULT 2 http://www.bluesound.com/products/vault-2/ COCKTAIL AUDIO X40 http://www.cocktailaudio.com/overview_x40.php

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk AURALiC ALTAIR need a PC to rip & then store into the player HDD manually (or through LAN network). BLUESOUND VAULT 2 AND COCKTAIL AUDIO X40 when setup properly, can auto-rip & store into the in-built HDD. Don't need to make use of external PC to rip. tane0019 Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 http://homecinemapit.com.sg/shop/307-auralic-altair.html Think is S$2K+ .... can also see & buy at audio note Adelphi (I think). http://lenbrook.com.sg/bluesound/102-bluesound-vault-2.html retail shop at groundfloor Shaw Tower - also think might be available at GP acoustic Adelphi. COCKTAIL AUDIO X40 think is about S$2.5K +/- Think available at ShawTower - Musiclink AV (2nd floor) Or Absolute Sound (audio Bar-I think) at 3rd floor Adelphi.
Pismo Mac Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 I am also looking at this space since I am still using my squeezebox touch. Would prefer something that is DXD capable and a non-Sabre DAC. Storage is optional for me. So far, TEAC is the only brand that I know that meets my requirements. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
tane0019 Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 There are actually a lot of slightly different digital music player around. A) Transport only (ie, no DAC built-in), therefore need an external DAC. B) Streamer only (ie no HDD built-in), therefore need an external storage or NAS. C) All-in-One (ie built-in DAC and HDD). Of course there are a mixtures of transport with built-in HDD like Melco. (ie need a USB DAC). Melco also has an added advantage of being a audiophile NAS.
wizardofoz Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Even more options in the DIY space with Raspberry Pi and assorted DAC/AMP/RCA outputs that are very cheap. http://www.iqaudio.com/downloads/IQaudIO.pdf IQ is not a good place to buy the Pi tho as its not that expensive locally here from Federal or RS or Element 14 etc
Guest plasmasiao Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Since you are iPhone user, why not this: iPhone -> Airport Express -> DAC(optional) -> Amp, or iPhone -> USB -> DAC -> Amp Low investment, upgradable, simple and easy to use.
wizardofoz Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 Only issue is Airport/AppleTV output is limited to 44.1/16 or 48/16 at best...but its cheap and easy to use. Other issue is without some other software its probably not going to stream native audio formats like FLAC/DSD etc without transcoding somewhere.
Guest plasmasiao Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 TS is currently "playing CD", hence Airport with 44.1/16 not worse off. Apple lossless through iTunes is user friendly.
