very nice mr Gadget

you do realise there is only one step up from these machines, both mine and yours and thats a full commercial machine[/b]

Well, your machine is a step up from mine (HX etc) but I couldn't justify the price difference for my use. There are a lot of machines in the 2K - 2.5K range, mine is $1299 RRP. Don't get me wrong if I could afford it I would have gotten the Domobar Super or ECM like yours, they are fantastic no doubt. In hindsite I would have spent more on a grinder. The Rocky is good but I can see the advantages in spending a bit more. With all that said, the skill of the person using the equipment is more important than the equipment itself...I have much to learn before reaching the limits of my coffee hardware.

you are correct on all points.

My machine has been going strong now for almost 4 years

Pump was the only thing that has been replaced and that was cheap enough.

I dare say your machine should also last you a very long time

Grinder i opted for a mini mazzer, but i think they are overpriced personally.

and as you say, the barista is the most important part.

You can have the best machine best grinder best beans, but without the know how your coffee's will be doomed

here are a couple from my weekend away in sydney

yet to process all 500 photos

I must say the coffee has improved, must be all us Melbournians complaining.

Still Sydney seems to be the place to shop and Melbourne the place to eat and for cafes.

Also discovered birdland records just a couple minutes walk from our hotel...so stocked up on some cd's and sacd's

i'll only post a few up and link to the others to spare those on dial up

Hey Andrew

thanks mate, and yes Sydney Aquarium it was.

Practice practice practice, its the only way to learn, and experiment. Its digital so nothing to lose

Here's something for you to try with your second pic.

notice how the background is overexposed, and some areas slightly underexposed. Its a hard situation to get right, but enter HDR

If you use photoshop its built in.

what you do is set the camera up on a tripod and take 3-5 pics.

start from underexposing by 1 or 2 stops then work your way up to overexposing by a couple of stops.

now you will have a series of pics and each will have each part of the scene exposed perfectly.

Now enter all frames in hdr and presto.

here is a good guide

Cheers, thanks John.

I'll give it more of a workout on the weekend at Bathurst. Russ is coming and he has a lot of experience.........I will pester him somewhat.

No worries mate

it takes a while and you will pick it up, we all still learn all the time.

Do you shoot in RAW?

if not use this instead of jpg, this way if you do make a mistake its easily corrected.

RAW is like having a negative, just eats more space on your memory cards

I have 8 gig of memory, thats over 2000 High Res jpegs, or a substantial number of RAW images.

I'll give it a go.

Thought this might be the appropriate place for this.

Last nights photographic effort layered via photoshop.

I'm slowly getting the hang of it!

cheers Aslan,

not sure if you've come across it before but if not i think you'll have a lot of fun here http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ start with lighting 101 and you're set. can get really creative on shots like above. it's a slippery slope once you get into creative lighting. also a DIY haven :-)

here's an off camera snoot on a sb600 plus onboard flash shot during the day on the kitchen bench.
