Testing out the new 16-35 lens:

35624119584_7f3a214fa7_b.jpg

Nikon D750 camera + Nikkor 16-35 lens @ 16mm, f/8, ISO 100, 10 seconds. Played around a lot with colour on this one, so not natural looking at all :P

I like the extra reach of the 16-35/4 over the 20/1.8, although it's not quite as sharp, and doesn't handle points of light as well

--Geoff

I've been looking out for a wide zoom for Events (mainly) and haven't come across a lens I've been happy with the compromises. I use the 20 1.8 as well and that's what I compare wide zooms too (expecting too much I'd say) The 50 1.8 at f4 is sharp enough for Events and the zooms I've had a look at up to 35mm fall short in my view. So thanks for posting your observations on the 16-35 4. There's a photog up here who uses that lens a lot for landscapes with great results http://blog.avernus.com.au/

Thanks Paul and despite being within walking distance of the oval we drove there so I didn't get to take advantage of the $5 glasses of wine at the club rooms.

Lunch spot yesterday, Cape Deslacs looking SW along Clifton Beach, Mount Rumney on far right.

Panorama stitching not so good this time as it was blowing hard and it is done using images taken with a phone, handheld.

@awty   What it must be like to live in a place where there is such colour, vibrancy and life ............. bold colour, adventurous architecture and crowds of interesting looking people do not occur in my neck of the woods .......... :(:(

I think you may be mixing me up with colourful Ken, alas my photo world is mostly monotone, so even less colourful than yours.;)

Handheld shot, as the tripod was elsewhere at the time. Saturday night as we trudged the wet streets of Malvern and Prahran for the Glow Winter Arts Festival. Tram on Chapel Street.

How long was the exposure on that shot? Not bad for hand-held!

In comparison, here's a 10 second exposure using a tripod:

Just one second, enough to blur the tram and freeze everything else and about my limit when leaning up against a pole :D

Noice ... I've thought about this kind of "slice of life" photography, but I'm too reluctant to take or publish snaps of random people.

What's the worst that can happen :D You occasionally get the odd nutter who want's to have you, so to speak. The price of getting the shot and besides I'm up for it. Candid street photography is something that a lot of people have trouble getting into but once you get going it's pretty rewarding. It does push your boundaries and skill levels. If you start out shooting with a group of people it's a tad easier than walking the streets alone.

In the interests of full disclosure I am a camera gear snob.  I like quality camera gear and do think that good gear can make a difference.  Having said that they do say that the best camera is the one you have at the time.  This pic was taken with a little Canon S120 I bought for myself a couple of years ago, similar to a Canon G16 but less buttons.   Give it plenty of light and lots of information in each pixel it is very good.
