target101 Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 hey guys and girls i bought two accusound sw-250 subs for fourty bucks today now they power on but wont play sound ive used a dodgy wiring job from and elcheapo 5.1 sub and checked that the sub works ( even off the rated 22w from the cheap sub it fricken hit...) on looking at the plate amp i noticed a burn mark on a board that has the low level inputs on off switch and controls its down near the input plug ill take a picture and upload soon any help on if i can just replace the capacitors etc in affected area and it will work or if i need a new amp would be helpful
Cafad Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 Holy Crap!!! That's alot of kick for forty bucks!!!! A word of warning, if you do get them working you may not be able to inhabit the same room as them. I had some memorable experiences with only one of them, and the building was concrete block!
GraemeB Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 (edited) I still have an SW200 here, used recently, and was reminded how powerful (and clean sounding) the old (Aussie-built) Accusound subs were/are!! I agree with Cafad, use caution if/when you get them working, either singly or together. Otherwise you may get the effect of a sonic wrecking ball! Edited January 9, 2013 by GraemeB
Decky Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 (edited) I have a 300W oAudio BASH amp that is collecting dust. Let me know if you need it. It will probably be better that the original amp. http://www.oaudio.com/300W_SUBAMP.html Edited January 9, 2013 by Decky
target101 Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 how much? im uploading pics of the amp damage to tiny img now weirdly bith amps have a burn mark in the same spot person i got them off had a large home theatre room and had them behind couches not sure if they cranked them too much or over heated or what... might need to go ask an accusound repairer
Cafad Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 I've got the top off my SW250 at the moment, I'm off fishing early tomorrow but later in the evening I could have a look and compare your crook board pics to my healthy one and see what I can see.

Those large resistors are designed to run warm. Cheap, crappy Chinese PCBs will discolour under such stress. You're going to need a schematic and some test equipment. Either that, or you'll need to pay a visit to the man.
A J Posted January 9, 2013 Posted January 9, 2013 What's that mess just above the switch in the last photo?
target101 Posted January 9, 2013 Author Posted January 9, 2013 that have put like glue on everything so they know if you have played with it for warranty im guessing and f.e im gonna take one to a hifi mob today see what they reckon get one fixed so i know what they fix and put my soldering skills to work on the other haha
Zaphod Beeblebrox Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 that have put like glue on everything so they know if you have played with it for warranty im guessing and f.e im gonna take one to a hifi mob today see what they reckon get one fixed so i know what they fix and put my soldering skills to work on the other haha The glue is to hold stuff in place, so it doesn't move with vibration (common in subwoofers). Nothing to do with warranty protections. Take it to a tech.
Addicted to music Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 if its under warranty, do what ZB suggested, take back to the hae them look at it. If not you are going to need some tools, multimeter, soldering iron and desoldering tools etc. And you need to know how to use the all the function on the mulimeter The resistor that is darken and I would assume from the picture is R37 is the same value as the the one on the left R38 and are either 10 or 100 ohms, ZB can confirm which value it is as I have lost my skills in resistor color coding. The 2 orange component next to it are zener diodes, they have specific voltage ratings, and can be check with a multmeter as they conduct one way. Above C12 & C13 there is what looks like a round black component, I could be wrong but thats either another cap or an intergrated fuse. My bet is that the the darken resistor has gone open due to the heat stress its been subjected to. The zener diodes have also been subjected to heat stress as the legs are showing corrosion in that picture. Anyway, thats my visual evaluation without taking measurements. Or take it to a tech, Good luck!
target101 Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 nearest accusound repairer isnt open till feb... i can solder fairly well (mechanic by trade) might grab a multi meter and check some parts out where is a good place to source parts? jaycar?
target101 Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 and i doubt any warranty they are second hand and accusound only covers their sub amps for 1 year
target101 Posted January 10, 2013 Author Posted January 10, 2013 going into jaycar tomorrow to try to get the resistor and diode any ideas on the watt rating for the resistor and the voltage of the diode?
Addicted to music Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 The resistors look like they are a couple of watts, the Zener diodes are voltage defined and must be the correct voltage as they set up a consistent voltage to the circuit, this you need a circuit diagram, I'm out of luck on these.
target101 Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 tested the resistors they are fine one of the zener diodes gives no reading what so ever while the other gives a reading of 564 so im guessing the zener diodes are my problem im going to find out from and audio repairer what it will cost to get them to replace them while i can solder i downt want to put solder everywhere haha
PCORF Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 You will be impressed. I bought my SW250 sub brand new for $400 several years ago and it works strongly. Its such a powerful unit. Its not a bad unit for music , but for those action movies ..... no more comments. I often watch movies in 2.1, my VAF I-91's crossed over with the SW250. This thing is really powerful and goes down to about 25-30hz before the high pass cutoff kicks in to limit the ultra low bass.
target101 Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 can anyone recomend a good place that can do it or anyone who knows how to find out what voltage zener diode i need and will solder in new ones for some cash

Zener diodes are unlikely to be faulty. It is doubtful that the discolouration of the PCB is relevant. Ignore it.
VanArn Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 From what is revealed in the photo,it would appear that under rated components and layout/spacing have been used in what should be the supply dropping rails feeding the i.c.'s in the filter circuits.Usually these are plus and minus 15 Volts. The safest thing to do is to take it to a technician and have it fixed. There could be other causes for the overheating and failure and fiddling with the amp. could lead to greater damage. It may be a helpful if a list of repair services could be compiled over time to assist members needing help.
target101 Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 f/e reckon it will be cheaper to get it repaired or just get a new amp? im thinking of just getting a bush 500w amp and making a custom sealed box and mount both 10 inch drivers in there... this is ment to be a budget system haha so far ive only spent one forty on my yamaha tower speakers pioneer receiver and accusound subs

Sub Sonic Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 (edited) I'd be keeping them in their original cabinets, as that is what they were designed to be in. Worst case scenario you could leave the amps in place to fill the hole and use some external amplification. Best option would be to have them repaired and then they would be original. Have you tried both low and high level inputs? If the burnt resistors are near the speaker level inputs, they may be part of a voltage dividing network to take the signal to a lower level. If they are damaged due to high input levels, it may be an easy fix. If this is the case, the line (low) level input should still work. Regards, SS Edited January 11, 2013 by Sub Sonic
