Here's why (caution - spoilers):

The first 2 points were really what killed the movie for me. The rest are just smaller details that i feel could be better.

The kiss between Ben and Rey was simply ridiculous. There is completely no basis for it. Yes they were connected but were adversaries most of the time. There was nothing that any kind of romance could be built around. And Rey is with Finn! The people around me were either giggling or gasping in disbelief. And a lady behind me was going "no, no, please, nooooooo!!!!". I myself was squirming in my seat.

Palpatine: I am all of the Sith

Rey: And I am ironman - oops - i mean all of the Jedi

Nuff said

Other smaller strange things:

Don't know why they made the spirit of Luke lift the x wing from the ocean. Come on, couldn't Luke just *show* Rey where the x wing was and let *her* lift it? In an earlier scene, she could stop a larger ship from flying off - surely it would be the simplest thing to let her lift a deadweight x wing? And it would also be a nice mirror of Luke's own lifting of the x wing in the original

And whats with Han re-appearing to Ben and telling him Kylo Ren died but Ben is alive? He is no Jedi. Just a human and he can come back and talk to his son?? My friend said he was a memory as he wasn't glowing in blue. But how can a memory impart wisdom/knowledge? A memory only "knows" things that had already happened. And Ben could see this "memory" (he turned around and saw Han).

Luke took the trouble to give Rey Leia's green saber (to finish what Leia started) but in the final fight with Palpatine, BOTH her sabers were blue. The green saber never showed up!

Why did Ben die after saving Rey? She wasn't in the least bit affected when she saved Ben earlier. Did they just want someone to die to like Endgame in an attempt to get some tears flowing?

And oh, Finn's love confession/proposal (if that was indeed what he wanted) never came to anything even at the end after everything was resolved. Just left hanging. Even aftr Capt went back to be with Peggy, he still had a closure of reappearing in the present to tell the rest what he did.

And JJ Abrams will tell the fans...all will be revealed in the bluray bonus - Director's Cut :P

Posted

That's Disney's commercial decision rt? They submit the cut themselves without the scene so that it will cut the PG-13.

The article headline makes it sounds like the board censor cuts the scene from the movie, which is not the case.

It's even stated clearly in the article that 'The applicant (Disney) has omitted a brief scene which under the Film Classification Guidelines would require a higher rating.'

i watched ROS in Seattle USA Imax 3d as well as in Shaw Lido and can confirm that there was a very brief lesbian kiss scene during the celebrations that was missing in sg. its not enough to placate rabid LGBT social justice warriors, and too brief to raise a conservative eyebrow, so its really not  a big deal.

i gotta say, as a long time SW fan and one who loved the original trilogy, disappointed but ok with the 1st 3, and who HATED TLJ, I really liked the conclusion.  it was fast paced, entertaining, rewarded the old fans with nostalgia, and was a satisfying closure to the skywalker saga.

there are so many negative reviews centred around

  • not enough risk taking while undoing Ryan Jonsons 'brillant' subversive takes on the saga
  • plotholes and incoherent screenplay
  • playing to fan service
  • diminishing the Viet actress role considerably

for the first point, I am of the opinion that people who loved the last jedi n hated on rise of skywalker and Mandalorian are, at best, casual fans, or new millennial visitors to starwars. it is inconceivable to me how anyone who purportedly loves the starwars plotline and lore can tolerate how all this is undone by ryan's very self-indulgent take on the saga. tossing the jedi creed aside, disregarding rey's teased backstory, and then disposing of snoke is such a casual manner.  as Abrams himself has commented, "I don't think that people go to 'Star Wars' to be told, 'This doesn't matter.'  for me, who was so turned off by TLJ, ROS was the Redemption of Darth Abrams, and yes I felt like whooping and fistpumping whenever TLJ's crappy plotlines were overturned and summarily erased.

I fail to understand the fascination for subversive plots, or edification from satisfying various political agendas, or embracing the tyranny of inclusivity for inclusivity's sake; but i do understand that this isnt an appropriate platform for leftist post modernist hipster ideas. The contrived nonsense that was the last jedi is an example of how a straightforward storyline can be corrupted and abominated. there will always be those who feel that every avenue of entertainment is an opportunity to surreptitiously infuse their 'progressive' ideas for change, but thankfully, lucas always had creative control in the past, and has always been resistant to it. so for me, the star wars universe is a haven from all this BS and they should leave it the hell alone.  people who revel in drawing parallels to current political ideas, have forgotten that it is primarily a hokey space opera beloved by millions and not a stage for social commentary

it is also strange that the snarky critics who have issues with 'incoherent storylines' conveniently gloss over the uneven and ridiculous plotlines in TLJ, from the pointless casino scene to the crazy Holdo manouever (hyperspace-crashing through the star destroyer- really????)

as for fan service, why is it so often seen as a bad thing?? are the fans not the ones who kept the starwars engine chugging along all these years; and what is wrong with giving us nostalgia, especially in an episode that is supposed to be a culmination of the 9-episode skywalker saga. people try to label SW as all kinds of things, that it means different things to different people, and that's fine.  but the movies are primarily a skywalker story. if you don't like that, or have issues with frenetic battle scenes, simple good vs evil and messianic storylines, then perhaps you are better served being a trekkie or some other serious scifi buff.

as for Kelly Marie Tran’s character Rose, I was frankly gratified that Abrams sidelined her. also very tired of being labelled a misogynist and sexist for not liking this character.  seriously what is there to like?? Through no fault of the actress, she was let down by an insipid and preachy script resulting in an irritating and completely unattractive character. I could not help but fast forward through all her annoying scenes when viewing the TLJ bluray. i think poeple moaning for more screen time for her character are secretly pushing some sort of misguided feminist agenda or just plain deluded. Sidelining her was a brave and wise move and restored balance to the movie plotline. Well done jj!

And so, in spite of those who continue to use their hate and anger, and who can only deal in leftist absolutes,  mercifully, fan appreciation is at an all time high. Damned be the critic scores and their pointless nitpicking overanalyzing diatribes

i recall this commentary by Abrams about TFA. “How do we make this movie delightful?” said Abrams. “The movie needed to be delightful. It was not about explaining everything away, not about introducing a certain number of toys for a corporation, not trying to appease anyone. This has only ever been about what gets us excited.”

thank you mr Abrams for turning your back on the Sith and remaining a Jedi, like the fans before you.

I agree with ashen.

Anyway here’s my full spoiler comments

Watching Rise of Skywalker a second time was more enjoyable.

5 things

When Rey is burning Kylo’s TIE fighter and throws the lightsaber into the fire, Luke catches it and says “A Jedi’s weapon demands more respect” - that’s JJ saying Rian was wrong when he made Luke throw the lightsaber into the water at the start of Last Jedi.

When the Rebel fleet is deciding strategies on destroying the Final Order fleet, someone makes a mention about Holdo’s maneuver and was quickly dismissed as a one in a million fluke. Again back handed slap to Rian.

When Poe is giving the rally speech before their last assault he mentions Leia - just as the corelian corvette takes off - sense of homage.

Force theme plays when Finn realizes they used different navigation beacon from the one on the ground. I think that’s what Finn was trying to tell Rey - that he was Force sensitive.

When I first watched it, I always wondered why the two lightsabers were blue and not one green and one blue like in the re-enactment of Leias final training. But the Blue lightsaber is Leias and the first lightsaber Rey found is Anakin’s (also blue) the one Luke used in A New Hope.

Actually six.

Abrams even corrected Lucas oversight for Chewies medal at the end of A New Hope.

And 7 and 8

Oh and that scene in the caves when Rey uses his lightsaber and Poe only had a puny torchlight. lol

And having Han say - when Kylo is having trouble saying what he felt - “I know”. [emoji24]

Quite a balanced discussion - Kevin Smith obviously loves it.. and Marc doesn't. Both raise good points

There have been many comments that the plot felt rushed. That there wasn't enough plot development because the action just flashes by you so quickly.

I don't disagree with that. I think a large part for that cramming was to undo the mistakes of TLJ

Marc also makes a good point about the fanservice.

Things that happen in the fan service happen for the fans but there is no pay off for the characters.

In EndGame, when all hope is gone, Cap America hears on his comms - On your left, there is a huge pay off because it is The Falcon. And there is meaning and emotional impact for him, And for us, the fans.

When that same moment happens in RoS, the fans cheer because the person saying it has a special meaning for the fans (as he pretty much reprised what he did in RotJ) but the character saying it doesn't have that same impact for Poe Dameron.

Sooo this is interesting

Someone apparently leaked the canned original Episode 9 script... here's the rundown

It would have been called "Duel of the Fates"

Rewatching Star Wars Rogue One on Disney Plus means Dolby Atmos 4K HDR (even if not quite full 1000 nits) but the upgrade in audio alone is worth it.

I can’t help but compare similar scenes here and with Rise of Skywalker.

With Rogue One, there’s just more at stake.

When K2SO is down, he’s down for good. There’s no take back like C3PO in ROS.

Cassian’s past haunts him. There’s substance. The things he has done that he’s not proud of. So he seeks redemption. At any and all costs.

Po’s past as a spice runner does nothing for him.

And when faced with the inevitable, the two protagonists in Rogue One don’t kiss. There’s no rhyme or reason to. They embrace for the coming impact. ReyLo kiss made no sense.

So new Disney CEO looks set to put Filoni (Clone Wars) to be the new custodian of Star Wars and he will kick Rian Johnson off the ledge.. also that they intend to do a JJ cut of Rise of Skywalker and maybe retcon some stuff into Last Jedi. Might be interesting. We know Superman II basically was a different movie when Donner was helming it before it got butchered by the producers and we waited decades for the Donner cut... maybe this will fix it.

I sure hope they put Jon Favreau in it too. He really recaptured the magic of Star Wars in the Mandalorian
