HiFinutcase Posted April 5, 2021 Posted April 5, 2021 Hi Folks, On mold growing on your record after you have cleaned it before; I've learnt that residual cleaning fluid residue left on the record surface (even after you have vacuumed it) will encourage mold growth over time if record remains unplayed. Just leave a bottle of cleaning fluid open to sunlight will have (algae) mold growing in it after about a month or so will prove the point. So after you do a solution cleaning of your records do a rinse with plain water and play it (to throughly dry it out) before storing.

No with Mint and L'art du Son (these I have used, there may be others that do not grow mold). I think those commercial fluids that are meant for 1-step cleaning are better at suppressing mold than 2 step or 3-step fluids.

Funny that you mention this, i just took a record out yesterday, and saw some spots, wondering if it was mold, i remember i washed it and stored it. i use soap and water to wash though. i do leave them out to dry for an hour (30min each side, under the fan). will try to wash it and see if it goes away.
blue_starfish Posted April 6, 2021 Posted April 6, 2021 What I do for cleaning. Really bad mold that looks like world map, I do 3 step cleaning. As well as replace the inner sleeves and sun the album cover. 3-step as in alcohol wash --> distilled water rinse --> cleaning fluid wash Medium mold that looks like islands in the pacific ocean, I do a 1-step wash with good cleaning fluid. Replace the inner sleeve. Light dirt is there is no mold on the surface, but hear pops and clicks while play. The stylus picks up a clump of dirt from the grooves. I do a 1-step wash with cleaning fluid. All the above is done with a Nessie RCM 1

I buy 70% isopropyl alcohol from Guardian. Then add 8 to 10 parts distilled water to it. I only use alcohol when the mold is very bad. Spray the alcohol over the entire surface. Let it stand for 2-3 mins, then rinse off thoroughly with distilled water or tap water and let dry. Only after this will I start regular cleaning cycle with commercial fluids. The alcohol is only to kill mold spores so that the mold will not come back for a long time. Note that alcohol is damaging to records in high concentrations and make records sound bad. So use diluted alcohol only as a pre-wash when it is absolutely necessary. You should send your favorite records for a paid machine wash after hand wash. Hand-washing only gets rid of surface dirt. The deep recesses of the grooves are still dirty until sucked or spun clean. You know this is true when playing clean records still gets you a lot of dirt on the stylus. 1
BlurRhino Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 sorry not sure whether this is the right thread to post, but can i ask whether scratches on the vinyl be fixed? I have a very heartpain accidental drop
zephyr11 Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 ^^^^^^^^^^ i know the feeling, but sadly i know not of any way to fix a scratched record. hope you can find another copy of it.
scoobydoo Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 I think getting a dehumidifier for use in the room where you keep your records would help a lot in preventing molds from growing on your vinyl records. 1
