As title suggests im trying to find a way to watch and record Free To Air channels, Preferably in highest resolution. I recently got rid of Foxtel which was previously handling the FTA side of things.

It would be great if recorded content was available to other TVs via an app like HomerunHD but not essential. Does NVIDIA have ability to upscale FTA content as well?

I have a AppleTV 4K so im not to concerned with apps/streaming. I would rarely need to watch and record two things at once. What other information is required to make an informed decision?

So far iv done research on HomerunHD, Fetch, NVIDIA, Would these devices be better than a standard panasonic tv tuner?

I apologies in advance if this has been covered but i cant find the appropriate thread(please send link).

Any help appreciated so thanks in advance

+1 for the Fetch Mighty. I have an older model, with 3 tuners that can record 4 different programs at the same time. But the new model has 4 tuners, and can record six programs at the same time. The reason so many recordable programs is good, is that I almost never watch live TV, and only watch what I record. Then it doesn't matter if I fall asleep halfway through a movie, I don't miss the end.

The other good things is you can just select "record series" and the Fetch will almost always record all episodes, even if the times change slightly. On the very rare occasion it may not catch a full episode, if the timing has been changed drastically due to an extended, unscheduled covid report, or the football show runs over more than 40 mins, like it sometimes does.

One drawback I have found is that because the program guide uses the Fetch Website, it doesn't tell you information such as the main actors, or the release year of the movie. So you can't always tell if it's an old original movie, or a remake of the movie.

Edit: I also have two Fetch Minis, that don't record. But you can view the recordings on the Mighty, and also set up recordings remotely, from the Minis.

Hi Bob, Thanks for all the additional info.  Looks like the Fetch Mighty is the way to go.

Can i just confirm, if the internet goes out i will still be able to watch TV. Just not access to the TV guide?

The Fetch Mini struggles quite a lot when the internet goes out and the TV tuner in it is fairly pathetic if your signal is marginal.  Not sure if the Mighty suffers from the same problems, but the Mini is glitchy and prone to squarky dropouts.  The other Fetch channels are what we mostly use it for.  A lot of the time the performance of something like a Sony PS3 with the PlayTV attachment suffers far less in terms of tuner performance.  It's not very convenient though as starting to watch FTA takes 30 seconds from switching it on.

My recommendation for a TV tuner lately is...just get something you can install Freeplay apps on instead and not bother with an antenna based system.  Mine blew down the other day and while I did put up a temporary replacement, the streaming versions of the FTA channels are quite excellent over something like a Chromecast with Google TV. so we haven't used it much.

In a regional area this will likely mean the ads will change and you might not get local news but really, who watches that any more anyway?

Yes, you can still watch free to air no problems.

@Old Man Rubber The two Minis and the Mighty I have are OK with reception. Certainly no worse that the TVs they are connected to. And I live in a marginal reception area.

The only problem that occurs when the internet drops out are obviously the apps won't work, no EPG, and you might find the remote will be not very responsive while the Fetch/s are working out they don't have internet connection. (I think it's just a "leave me alone, I'm busy" kind of thing). But that is only for about 10 to 20 secs max.

Thanks for the info regarding TV guide.

I have been using free to air apps which has worked really well. I just really want the ability to record things like the footy.

Yep, This is exactly the type of suggestion I was after! Cheers for posting it.

The Fetch Might is winning the race so far. Seems to be ticking all boxes.

I've had a Beyonwiz T4 for a few years now (actually quite a few years!). Hasn't missed a beat. If there were ever 20 simultaneous records I needed it could handle it easily.

Fetch has active support and a much newer product than others.  Panasonic has poor customer support for all their products, not sure Beyonwiz provides much these days?

Plus it is relatively easy to setup and use.  My neighbour, in the 70s,  is very comfortable using it to record FTA on a regular basis,  However, I did help him disentangle his previous Foxtel mess and setup his Mighty and a Mini.

I told you this, when you asked me about it! 😛

I recently replaced my IQ4 with a Fetch Mighty. Only thing I miss is AFL in HD as 7mate is SD only here in the boonies.

We did the same essentially. Replaced Foxtel with Fetch Boxes and a Kayo subscription (for AFL and F1).
