I'm looking for a solution for playing tunes out on the back deck.

Got my Squeezebox library and Spotify. Among other options,  I'm considering a wi-fi enabled smart speaker that can function as an audio bluetooth device (so that I can connect via my phone, using Spotify or Squeezebox apps), and/or using voice commands to connect to Spotify directly. Voice commands to my Squeezebox library would also be nice, but I'm assuming that's not a thing yet. Generally connecting via Android phones although the kiddies have iThings.

Decent audio quality and volume output (so I can crank it up without distorting bass) is required, which I guess rules out the wee jobbies like Google Nest Audio.

Thinking maybe the Sonos One, but maybe there's better (or cheaper) solutions out there.

We've got a Echo Studio in our dining room, in daily use by the whole family. Decent output, but you could always add the additional sub if you wanted that extra oomph. Fits the bill for Spotify, not sure how you could integrate Squeezebox other than plugging one into its aux port.

If you enable the UPnP/DNLA Bridge plugin on the Squeezebox, you can play music to any UPnP/DLNA enabled active speaker  e.g. Sonos, Yamaha Musiccast, Denon Heos, Devialet Phantom. You can then continue using your existing phone app and Squezebox.

We took delivery of an Echo Studio today (ordered during the Boxing Day sales). Very decent sound for a portable smart speaker, and certainly streets ahead of a small Echo model we already had.

The Echo Studio came with a 3.5mm port for connection of either an analogue cable or a mini Toslink optical cable.

Initially the Toslink connection wouldn't work. The reason: it wouldn't accept spdif at 96kHz.  After changing the source to 48kHz spdif it worked fine!  Quite loud too.
