deviltoob Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 I have a Canon Canonet I just bought second hand and the light meter is off by, I think, one stop. For example if I use a phone light meter app with the same iso and shutter speed on ss priority, the aperture is showing F8 in stead of F11 in the app. Does mean I need to take it off automatic and lower the aperture to get the right exposure (ie. go manual) or should I try the camera as is?
Misternavi Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 Don't know the camera but if it is off you can always bump up the ISO setting to compensate? but I think you should be fine with 1 stop over. Give a short roll of film a go. 1
bob_m_54 Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 Either that, or the phone app is off by one stop. 1
awty Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 (edited) Thats fairly normal for a 60 year old cheap consumer camera, better to be 1 stop over than 1 stop under espoused. If you want more accurate metering then its best to buy a later model, 90's cameras usually have the best meters, but their not very cool Go forth and use. BTW does it use a Selenium cell or a button battery? If it uses a battery then you may need to get a voltage adaptor as they were intended to use the now obsolete mercury battery. If Selenium then live with it. I have quite a few Selenium cameras and meters that still work good enough for film. Edited July 31, 2021 by awty

I think it might have been the type of app. I downloaded another one that measures a point on the screen, whereas the older one took a photo and then gave a reading. When I point the camera right at that point the new app is measuring I get exactly the same reading so I think the camera meter is bang on. I think it was the app that was not right possibly. 1

I have some WeinCell 1.35v I bought a few weeks ago that I think are the correct ones as well. 12 hours ago, awty said: Thats fairly normal for a 60 year old cheap consumer camera, better to be 1 stop over than 1 stop under espoused. The Canon Canonets are considered to have good lenses aren’t they? Are there better film cameras you can get for around the $200-300 mark? Edited August 1, 2021 by deviltoob

Id just load it up with some film and go out shooting. 1
