Bengineer Posted May 22, 2022 Posted May 22, 2022 (edited) I just run a 20hz to 20khz sweep on YouTube (its a video). Turn it up and close your eyes and concentrate. Certain points will make you wince. Take note of those. Generally for my 3000hz, 6000hz and about 9500 or so. Depends on cans and source gear a bit too. Good starting point I think, to understand your ears and brain. Install Equaliser APO. Then install Peace GUI. This will give your system wide parametric EQ control. Also "sibilance" is user dependant. Not an absolute value that one can assess for others. Some people love the Utopia, HD800S, HE1000se, D8000 Pro etc. I find then all too bright in stock form and get fatigued fairly quickly. Edited May 22, 2022 by Bengineer
Neo Posted May 22, 2022 Posted May 22, 2022 (edited) Why not grab your headphones and head to Minidisc in Chatswood. They have a lot of source and amplification gear to play with and try. The Schiit gear that you have is entry level and you pairing it with a reasonably dear headphone expecting to get the best out of them. Go and have a listen, wouldn’t be surprised to see your Schiit stack for sale here soon on the classifieds ps Lachlan or Wing will also be able to give you an idea if there’s an issue with the headphones. kenohwee Posted May 22, 2022 Posted May 22, 2022 Thanks very much for the feedback and time everyone, I really appreciate the help. I will definitely try all suggestions stated above. In the meantime, have a great weekend!
Greg Orr Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 I have the v2's recently got the burson soloist gt, its an unbelievable combination . I came from schiit gear myself but the burson just lights these up with it oodles of power and fantastic neutrality . The more juice you feed them the better. Also the v2's improve greatly with a better cable running them balanced . I have not found them overly bright or sibilant myself. Its all about finding the right balance with what hardware you plug them into.
kenohwee Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 Hi Gregg, thanks very much for your feedback! Much appreciated, i heard many great things about the burson soloist gt but I just got myself the singxer sa-1 so gotta save up from here to hopefully afford them (soloist) one day. I'm currently running them off the stock balanced cable (XLR) so I'm curious to see if it'll make the headphones sound a little warmer. Unfortunately Minidisc didn't have any demo to compare whether there were any issues with the headphones but one of the guys just said this is part of Hifiman's signature sound but i even tested the HD800s and was surprised that it's not as sibilant to me than the V2's were. Maybe i'm a little too sensitive in certain Khz in the treble regions.

If the upper mids are hot your brain will get increasingly sensitive to the pain. Id say the problem is down to insufficient or no equalising. Are you using any EQ?
kenohwee Posted June 5, 2022 Posted June 5, 2022 Hi Nada, thank you for your feedback, Yes I just started experimenting with EQ today and i had to bring it down by -5DB at the 8khz region as I see that's where the peak is mostly at in a few graphs online. So it did help a bit with a bit of sacrifice tonally but I was surprised that there was no mention of EQ ever required for the Hifiman He1000v2 in almost all reviews/forums that I've searched, i've only heard such EQ needed for the HD800s. Hope this post will also help people realise that these headphones may be too bright for people sensitive to the 8khz peaks I might also try some dekoni pads and see if it helps as well.

kenohwee Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 Hi Nada, apologies for the late response, so I'm using the equaliser apo with peace extension from bengineer's advice
Bengineer Posted June 6, 2022 Posted June 6, 2022 (edited) https://headphonedatabase.com/oratory/headphones?ids=7 3khz, 5khz and 8khz all look fatiguing to me. Could use a bass shelf too. Low shelf filter. 100hz. +3-4db. Edited June 6, 2022 by Bengineer 1

kenohwee Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 (edited) Hi Bengineer, thanks for that website, unfortunately it's having trouble loading the graphs so I had to check it out on other sites instead, but it seems to differ from the graphs that's been attached ( in the other graphs the highest peak was at 8khz - while there is a raise in the 3khz and 5khz, it's nowhere near as high as the 8khz ones - this is from diyaudioheaven.wordpress website) Bass is good for me on the he1000v2's, but will still test out just to see how that feels. Thanks very much for your suggestion! Edited June 7, 2022 by kenohwee
Bengineer Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Some have compensation and some are raw. So hard to compare. That one looks raw, the one I posted had a Harman compensation applied.

kenohwee Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Thanks Nada for those images! But I'm still a little confused though because the one from ratory1990 website has the frequency response as raw where it's showing the peaks in 3 & 5 khz. Unless what the 2 separate graphs from different websites are telling me (if they're both indeed raw data) is that..... QC issues on the drivers of Hifiman He1000v2's which affects frequency responses? Would that be a possibility?
kenohwee Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 Also Nada, what browser are you using to open those websites? I've reloaded a ton but the graphs just wouldn't show up
Nada Posted June 7, 2022 Posted June 7, 2022 everyone is different every measuring rig is different enter this into your EQ and adjust from there
kenohwee Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 Wow - what a change~ Very very interesting, will keep playing with the settings. it definitely made the sound a lot fuller but it's not open as what it's used to, but at least the treble is now a lot more bearable. Once again, thank you both for sharing! I'm learning a lot through this journey
kenohwee Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 Sorry one last thing - where do I find the BW/S portion from the Peace extension?
Andre28 Posted July 12, 2022 Posted July 12, 2022 Does anyone here have the Ananda Stealth, or know how it might compare to the non stealth and/or the edition XS?
