THOMO Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 (edited) Further information:This is my DIY horn speakers which have been many years in the making.Features original Edgar midrange tractrix horn using open backed Dynaudio D54 dome midranges.Tweeter is a modified Lorantz slot /ring radiator.Bass horn is a folded horn design going back to a 1970 Wireless World design which somehow works really well and does not need to corner load.it was a joint design effort with input from old guys back then who knew how to design folded horns including Paul Klipsch. The woofers are Fostex FW 305 12 inch which are expensive drivers [cost around $900 landed] and which are considered to be one of the best drivers for horn loading.Crossover is very simple passive-second order on bass [Solen cap] at about 400hz crossing to midrange which only has a 100uF protection cap and a 2.2 uF[ Mundorf ] first order on the tweeter. An L pad is used on the midrange. I have in-room measurements and these measure very well with really surprising bass extension down to around 35hz.Sound is smooth, fast ,dynamic and meaty with very good imaging. The Edgar midrange is right up with the best midrange you will hear.I am yet to hear a compression driver based midrange which sounds as good. Reluctant sale but I have no room for these since getting back my big Tannoy Canterbury copies. Pick up only.Although I could deliver to Perth. The midrange horns are sand filled and weigh around 45kg each. The red line is the overall response. The dip at 350 hz was later corrected with a crossover tweak. That is an in-room response .A few room modes are evident but for a 3 way horn system the response is pretty good-with no lack of bass extension. Yardbird Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 Can't help but see that amazing tree in the background. Have you ever had anyone look at it? It looks like an Aboriginal birthing tree. Nice speakers BTW. 1

Although this property which is on the Vasse Estuary was settled and farmed in 1837 so the tree [tuart] would probably not have been like that back then.Although it might be much older than I thought. Some jarrah are very ancient but they are much slower growing than tuart.

Yes, ask one day from Noongar. You more than likely have something very special there. Private property is the best place for Aboriginal Cultural heritage against vandalism. Here's one on my Country. Sorry about the hijacked comments. I'm sure the horns will sell shortly. If only in Melbourne... 9 4
breed555 Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 Very cool speakers. Any idea about sensitivity/how much power is required to drive them?
singleendedamp Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 Wow. I like the midrange horns. They are like Lowther TP1 midrange horns. Good luck with the sale.

They are around 100db /watt sensitivity which is set by the tweeter which has no attenuation on it.The midrange is massively sensitive as the driver itself i saround 96db without horn loading-my guess around 106 db..So do not need huge power to drive them. They sounded very good with my Almarro 318B SET which was about 15 watts. You might get away with less than that. 3
illbarto Posted August 23, 2021 Posted August 23, 2021 How far off to he wall do they need to be THOMO?

They are not that fussy really. They can be quite close .The back of the box is triangle shaped and the horn outlet is back from the rear so they the bass exits to each side rather than firing directly backward into the wall. Those measurements are with it nearly up against the wall.
Ian McP Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 I knew the late Alf Lepp, here's his tractix horn http://audio-muzica.blogspot.com/2009/01/constructie-boxa-95-97-db.html regards Ian 1
