Dear all,

I was gifted a fair condition Yamaha YST-SW100 that I wanted to try and repair for a friend. I recall when these came out in the early 90's and was reasonably impressed with its performance in a small room.

The woofer foams were rotten so I found some new rubber replacements on eBay for a good price.

I've refoamed a few drivers over the years and never had any problem doing so - I successfully refoamed it's smaller brother the YST-SW50 that has just the one woofer - but these were different. The voice coil gap must be very tight and I just couldn't get these to line up despite three tries.

I even tried shimming but to no avail......

I found that the Jaycar Response 6.5" CW2194 fit perfectly. Even the screw holes lined up spot on!

Anyway these are working again now and they are really quite amazing performers with these woofers.  Look great too!

The Jaycar woofers are terrific quality for their price, here's the two measured.....

Full measured T&S specs using DATS are attached as a pdf document.

Here's the unit measured ground plane style.....

Distortion measured at 85db, 90db, 95db and 100db....

And finally here's the measured response with the "high cut" filter at 40hz (min), 90hz (12 oclock) and wide open (140hz)...

Shows a 35hz tuning - awesome!

Total cost to repair was $70. I'm really happy with the performance of this little sub, it sounds great and goes loud - for its size.

Who would have thought two little 6.5" woofer's would perform so well!?

Cheers.

🍻

Thanks for the post OP.
I was going to order a foam surround kit for the same sub and was looking for dust cap size when I seen your post online.
Glad I didn't try do a re-foam now, my missus calls me an angry builder, hahahah.
Local Jaycar had the same drivers in stock and I installed them yesterday (same day I seen your post).
Was meant to be as they even had a 15% off sale for members and I managed to pick them up for $59aud.
They sound quite good  when I played some Puscifer, lo-fi, and jazz through them last night.
Really happy with the outcome.
Cheers

I just received a used YST-SW100 that was in good condition and had been cared for nicely. Unfortunately, UPS beat the heck out of it shipping. I have filed a claim, but in the meantime, I'm going to try and get it fixed up.

Has anyone opened up the unit? Something it rattling around inside it so i need to have a look and see what the damage is. It does power on, but I don't want to test it out until I can determine what is going on inside it. I'm thinking about trying to start with the screws on the back, but just the ones on the outside perimeter.

Also, it looks like the front bezel is just attached with standard wood dowels but any advice on how to remove the front bezel without deforming the particle board cabinet would be helpful.

regards,

Hey Mike,

Not sure if you've already looked into the solutions but I will do my best to offer some advice.  You must remove the rear plate/amp to remove the grill.  After the amp is removed you should be able to see 2 screws in opposing corners which secure the grill, remove them, then the grill.   Also removal of plate will allow access to inside cabinet which should reveal the rattle.  Given the shock from shipping could be anything but hope something simple like a reinforcement or brace which had .

FWIW regarding replacing the surrounds, I didnt have an issue.   I had done a few speakers before with mixed results so by no means a pro.  I'd take a gamble and guess maybe the dimensions for the replacement surrounds the OP got were off,  or attaching to the top of the cone played a role.    The original surrounds I replaced were attached to the underside of the cone I also attached to the underside as well. Hope the information is helpful.

Thanks - sorry for the delay. I was able to open the back up and found the plastic/cardboard port  had been knocked lose. I was able to place it back into the hole. I didn't use any glue or anything yet and it seems to be fine. I didn't look for the grill screws while I had it open, but will have another look.  UPS ended up refunding the price of shipping and the cost I paid for the unit, so I got it for free. Just need to fix it up now.

Hey  @bub - it looks like I'm going to have to replace the surrounds / drivers as my top surround has a tear in it. Do you have the dimensions or a link to the surrounds you used?

I just found this - the measurements look correct, and the fitted picture on the driver also has it glued to the back of the cone.

Hey Mike,

I looked through some old emails and found the ebay listing which also was a simplyspeakers product although different than what you linked.  I did this in 2018, not sure if the listing has changed.    https://www.ebay.com/itm/131027935297   Seems I cant find the foam set I purchased on their site directly, only on ebay and vice versa with the rubber only on thier site.  Dimensions are different but rubber was factory and they are specific on their website with the speaker model number.  Assuming because I browsed only on ebay that I never saw the rubber replacements. I did contact support for better instructions they never mentioned the rubber either.   They did provide a different video instruction for a jbl with a similar underside surround attachement.

Thanks Bub - yeah I watched this video yesterday and gained a bit of confidence and ordered a set. After closer inspection both speakers in my sub have cracks in their surrounds so hopefully this goes well. I appreciate all your help.
