Is there a big difference in SQ between the USB and the Coaxial inputs of the Denafrips Dacs? The Pontus in particular. I am considering a Primare NP5 transport and it only has a Coaxial and Optical outputs.

A well designed DAC should sound good irrespective of the its choice of Input? Will this theory hold good?

it's more bout the resolution it can push out/receive?

i think max coax/ toslink do only 24 with 96/192, whereas higher bitrate are supported over USB.

Thanks. I have already bought the Primare and coax works great. I only stream Qobuz so 24/192 is all I care about.

Haha, on an uneven floor,a four legged stool will always wobble but a three legged stool will always be stable.

Do this apply here?

nice!

got mine end of last year, wanted to swap out the footers, too tall for my stack but apparently it needs to be removed from the inside.  so had to swap out the cdp footers instead.

oh yes, just remember no light is OS, light on is NOS, don't know why it's like that but it is like that.

Hi, I recently got my ares 2, may I know if I need a transport that can decode DSD so that my DAC can play DSD?

I’m currently using a Cambridge audio Azur 651 C…. I have some DSD CDs. But I note that playback on Ares 2 is still 44.1K?

Any pointers from experience folks?

Is there enough interest to start the Denafrips owners thread? I've had a few PMs asking questions about them, but makes more sense to discuss it on here.

Personally was looking for something less clinical as i run metal domed monitors. I added valves, then i added the Denafrips Ares2. Then recently i upgraded to the Venus II.

Anyone else tried a Venus II or further up the chain, or tried multiple Denafrips products? There must be a few of you as i know the Pontus has a queue of people lined up to buy them.

I have a Pontus and also wonder what going up the chain would bring, tho am pretty happy with it so far.

Listening to Batty's Ares II persuaded me to buy a Pontus II that gives me excellent results; much better than the previous DAC.

I know "quality starts at the source" AND "the chain is only as strong as the weakest link".

What I don't know is where the upgrading stops. I usually buy a new piece of equipment that outshines the rest of my gear so every purchase is not only an improvement but an impetus to keep going!xD

Sometimes I think I might be addicted, sometimes I know I am!

Hey Peter,

Why did you choose the Pontus, and what else did you consider?

How does it go with the rest of your gear and what impact has it had?

I bought the Pontus II a few months ago to replace an NAD M51.  Huge upgrade - much more detail and solid bass.  Really worth the extra $ in my opinon

Pontus II and Artemis In a Headfi setup for me.  Loving the pairing.  Listened to the Ares II which was also great however immediately felt the Pontus was for me when I heard it.  Heard the Terminator for a session and it is also pretty amazing. Very revealing detail wise, fantastic sound, and if I needed a full size DAC replacement I’d seriously consider it. R2R DACs have a sound that suits my ears. A big fan.

the Pontus was a reasonably? inexpensive entry into the Denafrips world of ladder dacs, had my eye on the Terminator but wasnt really ready to spend that much as I still enjoy my vinyl setup.

good question George, it is very easy to listen to, lots of depth and as mentioned above detail and solid tight bass, but somehow also quite even throughout the spectrum where you just

listen to the music and forget some of the hifi stuff.

you are welcome to listen and or borrow it if you wish.

I dont think i have seen a Pontus for sale used? If you want one get your order in early, they are in high demand and there is a wait time at the moment.

Alvin Chee has just had to move to a new bigger premises in Singapore, such is the demand for Denafrips products.
