winnor Posted April 12, 2023 Posted April 12, 2023 I upgraded the firmware of Ares2/Enyo a few days ago. The firmware has been successfully upgraded. The upgrade has more ares ii 12th flavor. Thanks to Alvin for his efforts in firmware upgrade service. 1

I have done so, just waiting for confirmation prior to plugging it all back in as its not set up to a pc normally and plugging and unplugging everything from the cabinet is a pain so I'd rather wait for confirmation then use it again.

Hello! 08Boss302 I emailed Alvin a screen shot after I upgraded the firmware and got an email confirmation from Alvin today. You reminded me that I forgot to screw back the Enyo case. Thanks! Glad my question promted you to put the DAC back together!!
eman Posted April 12, 2023 Posted April 12, 2023 Got to get an 'after ' shot played as well !? So much mucking about.
thimmy118 Posted April 12, 2023 Posted April 12, 2023 For Hermes + Pontus 2 owners, is your Hermes USB software up to date? Mine was purchased by the previous owner on 8/11/21, however, it did not contain the latest USB MCU software, which was released on 29/11/21. When I checked, it still had the 'USB HighRes Audio' version of the software instead of the latest 'Denafrips USB Audio V3.12'. You can find the Mac file update at - https://www.denafrips.com/usb-mcu-firmware-update-mac. The window file is located at - https://www.denafrips.com/firmware-update-usb.

Yeah, it's a few extra min out of my day but on the positive the manufacturer confirms that it's all correct and upto date. Not all together shabby customer service IMHO.

We now find out there's going to be a different firmware release for one of the chips, which we have to dismantle the unit to find. I'm working with painful disability here so every extra step is much harder.

I do agree it's not as simple as other updates I've had with other gear where you plug it in, download update and it's all fine in a matter of seconds. 1
winnor Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 (edited) I bought the ARES2 12th at the same time as the ENYO; after the AB comparison, I returned the 12th and kept the ENYO because I liked the warmer but slightly fuzzier sound of the ENYO. After the ENYO firmware upgrade, it sounds more like the 12th (which I returned at first), and the original features (the reason I purchased it) are missing some. Allow me to ask those of you who have upgraded your ENYO firmware, do you feel the same as I do after upgrading? Translated with DeepL,I‘m in beijing. Edited April 13, 2023 by winnor
08Boss302 Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 (edited) I got my Ares ii about 4 or so years ago I'd say I've always enjoyed it and mostly in os mode and slow filter. I'm still waiting on confirmation of upgrade before I reconnect everything but will come back to you then after some listening. Silly question, you've got your sample and filter and phase set as it was prior to firmware upgrade? This might have changed and worth checking again Edited April 13, 2023 by 08Boss302
winnor Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 I like NOS+Slow filter, give the new firmware some time to run in, and then make a judgement after two weeks. 1
08Boss302 Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 I am looking forward to hearing it, I hope that what made the ARESII great is not taken away now from upgrade. Reviews of 12th Anniversary model were positive with nearly all I watched stating it was an improvement over the original ARESII, keeping its fundamental sound and architecture but just more of the same goodness, not stripping back. I'd be disappointed if that warm richness has been stripped to a more analytical sound. I still have not had a reply on confirming my screenshot, i think if nothing is received by saturday morning I'll just plug it all back in and start listening!!

The Slow or Fast filter is only active when it is in OS with my Pontus. i.e. no filter is applied when it is in NOS. Not sure if Aries is the same.

This is correct, sourced from the Denafrips site for the AresII NOS/OS 1. Press the Mute button once to enter configuration mode 2. Press the Opt1 momentarily - Opt1 On = NOS - Opt1 Off = OS 3. Wait for 5s 4. Ares II back in operational mode Filter Selection (Effective in OS Only) 1. Press the Mute button once to enter configuration mode 2. Press the Opt2 momentarily - Opt2 On = Slow Filter - Opt2 Off = Sharp Filter 3. Wait for 5s 4. Ares II back in operational mode ....and for the Pontus/Venus Filter Selection (Effective in OS Only) 1. Press the Mute button once to enter configuration mode 2. Press the Mode momentarily OPT LED On = Slow Filter OPT LED Off = Sharp Filter 3. Wait for 10s 4. DAC back in operational mode Edited April 13, 2023 by 08Boss302

I got my confirmation email overnight, all is correct. I will plug it all back in tonight and have listen. It is suggested in the reply email (as you also suggested) to give it some time to run in, this was true also with the DAC out of the box when I purchased it.

DAC back in operational mode As per Pontus Manual: "The PONTUS allow the user to change the sampling mode on the fly. NOS, as the name suggested, does not over-sampling to digital input data." rodders3 Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 I have the Ares II. Tried the update about 5 times but no dice. Follow everything to the letter in instructions. Always same result - Error 111. I get tot the point of it updating and looks as if it does the majority then fails after about 1-2 mins. Have changed USB cords, computers - same result. Tried to correspond on Vinshine chat box but no reply (during business hours). The good news is the Ares still works just no update. 1

Not sure if you are running IOS or Windows, but either system should allow you to check which version of software is currently running on your Ares via a USB connection. 1

If you are happy with the sound, as I am with my Pontus II, then there is no real reason to update. TBH, rather than changing all devices , Aries, Pontus, Termy, to the “12th Anniversary flavour” , my preference would have been for the firmware to provide a greater choice filters for the end user to turn on and off . 1
rodders3 Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 Tried to update on Mac OS. It did show what version software I'm running but would need to do again to check. What version of software should the Ares II be running to update - that may be the issue all along.
thimmy118 Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 Sorry can't help you there with the Ares software version but if it is like Pontus, the software file that you downloaded should have the file name. Check if a similar filename appears on your Mac under the Sound Output section of your System Setting Menu when you connect the Ares to the Mac. If it is than you are good to go. 2
Niktech Posted April 14, 2023 Posted April 14, 2023 (edited) There are a few members on the Denafrips Facebook pages who have chosen to order a new DSP board with the firmware already installed rather than self install. That way if they don’t like the sound, they can revert and on-sell it. IIRC the Pontus II DSP board is ~SNG$300. Edited April 14, 2023 by Niktech Currency
