Sorry can't help you there with the Ares software version but if it is like Pontus, the software file that you downloaded should have the file name. Check if a similar filename appears on your Mac under the Sound Output section of your System Setting Menu when you connect the Ares to the Mac. If it is than you are good to go.

The software downloaded perfectly fine. I unzip it, drag to the Mac terminal box and starts the download. Then it runs for 1-2 mins and fails with Error 111.

Sorry but did you check the filename in your download folder?

I did Thim. It was the Mac OS update file I dragged across.

"My understanding is it says 3.12 it’s correct the last part my be different depending on the chip updated. Mine was different and this is what Alvin told me when I asked.

Don't think this worked for me, still shows A22E1.6
I believe the updated firmware is A22FA1.6. Did your upgrade complete without errors?

Yes A22E1.6 is one of the number for new firmware. It‘s the reason I asked Alvin since mine was different."

Okay, home now so just hooked it up again.

My version is also 3.12 - see screen shot.

AFAIK "3.12" indicates success—at least it did for me.

I not certain Greg but I think it is the numbers next to the  version number that indicates the update. The post up from mine indicates a file A22FA1.6. is a successful update.

I believe the V3.12 is the latest USB MCU version and as Rod said, the A22FA1.6 is the new FPGA version.

When I sent my screenshot I asked why my details looked different to the example screenshot in the instructions...

Here is the reply confirmation and the screenshot I sent through

"No worry sir, the sample is only a reference to show you where to check the firmware version.

A22E1.6 is the right one for your DAC."

My screenshot and correct firmware after successful upload

Very helpful. Not sure how it did manage to update as always said it failed. Must have gotten it first go then but seems weird never had a success message. Cheers.

I had the same experience (Error message) but received confirmation from Vinshine that it was successfully updated.

I wonder if this option will be extended to the Ares range as well.  I am sure some people will be appreciative of the choice to roll back - and I guess in all fairness it would be nice to have the option to roll back if you are not satisfied or do not like the changes that the firmware update/grade brought on.

Denafrips seem to have a real solid grip on customer service and genuinely listen to customer feedback.  It is a great approach IMO and shows how connected they are to their customer's feedback.

Old firmware versions now on line to download.

The link is the one in the original upgrade email from VINSHINE AUDIO, and there are now both new and old firmware available for download.

Now that both the new and old firmware are available you can decide what you like best without any fear of losing out.

Note that the disappointed are outnumbered by the pleased.

I just saw the vinshine email come through but it's confusing as it seems only for Pontus, no mention of Ares/Enyo for those interested in rolling back that unit

I could be reading it wrong?

Just now, from the link within the firmware update email  I received from Vinshine a few days ago,I download the firmware 1.0 for ARES 2/ENYO.

No, I won’t be doing that. I will be keeping the original relaxed, musical and organic sound that the Pontus II is known for -  I don’t want a 12th Anniversary flavour🙂.

Well, we don’t know that for sure. Denafrips saying there’s only a few or several people who are unhappy with it doesn’t really pan out when the manufacturer suddenly provides a firmware rollback to all, for all models and all FPGA chips. You don’t do that just to be nice 🙂

OK, I am little confused by your email.  The link you used to rollback was it the email you originally received with the upgrade FUT link?

I can't seem to find the original firmware in that email anywhere.  Are you able to explain how to find it or put the link here or send me the PM with that link?

It would be great to know simply to open options should I not prefer the latest firmware that I can roll back to where it was prior to me doing the update.

thank you

Did you get a link from Vinshine with a password to download the new firmware? If so…go back there and you will find a download for the old firmware.

I did, I looked in their and I couldn't find anything that said original firmware

Even if I opened the file where the example screenshot and readme file is I cannot see it, but it might be there I just don't know what I'm looking for.

Do you know the filename I should be looking for?

Contacting VINSHINE AUDIO again for firmware rollback help is, in my opinion, the prudent way to handle this.

Thank you, I did this and was advised it was in the FUT link 😂

Ill check again, doubtful my link was any different to the others, it's probably that I don't know what I'm looking for

That said, I'm not unsatisfied, I just like the option if over the next month or so I'd like to my own comparison or decide I prefer the original over the new

I haven't decided whether to roll back the firmware or not. As the new firmware continues to BRUN IN, my ears are getting used to the sound of the new firmware.

What's a good sound? Bad sound? That is the question.

So true.

I'm quite liking it at present, a few more weeks will tell for sure.  Things seem clearer, there is still that warmth and weight coming through, hopefully a bit more comes through as it burns in some more
