Further information:

I bought these classic speakers a while back, and while they were in great condition there was a bit of work to be done. I've done a restoration, based on information and discussion with members from this user group:

The Classic Speaker Pages

The original tweeters had been replaced, but weren't a good match for these speakers. These were replaced with HiVi Q1R tweeter, which are considered an excellent match for this model. The voice coil in one woofer was beyond repair, so a replacement was made and installed by Atilla Tanka at Speaker Sales and Repairs. Both crossovers were rebuilt, and the cabinets resealed.

The aim of the resoration was not to get back to the original AR-3a sound, but to get great sounding speakers with a full frequency response. The sealed cabinets and 12" woofer give this model a great bottom end. There is a lot of mid and high-end detail. This model, the AR-3a Improved, also has an A-B switch on the back, to enable a slight upper frequency emphasis when the speakers are situated in carpeted or less responsive rooms. This is done passively at the crossover.

Overall, these are great speakers with an excellent bottom end and detail mids and high frequency response. The cabinets show signs of wear, with some scratches and other blemishes which I've tried to show in the photos.
