zippi Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 (edited) Time to change the cartridge on this mixer tap, however I'm completely stumped re how to remove the top mixer lever assembly. There's no plastic plug like on the kitchen one I changed 2 weeks ago (remove the cap, loosen the grub screw and presto - lift the thing off) Is there something I'm missing here, or is it a lost cause that I need to give up on? Any suggestions much appreciated. Cheers! Edited September 5, 2021 by zippi
Gee Emm Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Look upwards underneath the benchtop. You can buy long tube flicker spanners to undo the nut, usually on along-thread. 1
zippi Posted September 5, 2021 Author Posted September 5, 2021 yeah - I've got a tube spanner for underneath the sink, however that doesn't get me closer to the cartridge, or does it? I'm thinking I need to remove the "cap assembly" that the lever is attached to - in order to get to the cartridge. That's how it worked on the kitchen sink mixer tap.
Gee Emm Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Sounds like it's different. Sounds like you are going to replace the whole tap.
sakabatou Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Can you pull the entire cap straight up? 1

t_mike Posted September 5, 2021 Posted September 5, 2021 Is there a grub screw which becomes visible when the lever is at full on? 1

Quark Posted September 6, 2021 Posted September 6, 2021 It looks like the brass threaded piece needs to be unscrewed - if not by hand, then multigrips and a cloth. 1
vinilink Posted September 10, 2021 Posted September 10, 2021 (edited) Maybe, cheaper to replace whole tap I mean save yourself from a headache. Edited September 10, 2021 by vinilink 1

If that don't work - that's it - a new tap it will be. 1

Before you do it make sure you can find the appropriate cartridge. Another possibility is if there is a hot/cold indicator - the little piece of plastic that is half red and half blue. If there is one, take that out and see if there is a screw /something you can take out. Normally you need an allen key. 1

I'm thinking I need to remove the "cap assembly" that the lever is attached to - in order to get to the cartridge. That's how it worked on the kitchen sink mixer tap. there is definitely a grub screw that holds the handle onto the lever of the cartridge…. However if you manage to loosen that off, you need to unlock the metal nut that hold the cartridge in. Either of these items could be that oxidised that it will be hard to get the grub screw off and you managed to stripped the thread where you find the Allen key just spins, or you’ll find you cannot get the metal nut off due to the same reason because of the oxidation…. To ensure success in doing either of these tasks you need to spray some lubricant such as WD40 or RP7 and let it soak so it dissolves the oxidation to prevent stripping or rounding of the grub screw and even destroying the Allen key, it just eases the tension for easier removal. If you do manage to get the cartridge out, when you find a suitable replacement never overtightened that metal nut that locks it in as it will damaged the seals. However, if it’s that old you find that certain o-ring seals for rotating the tap would have changed shape, if you rotate it and it’s not a consistent feel, replaced the whole lot, it’s not worth replacing the cartridge. And if you do a replacement, don’t buy cheap alternatives through Bunnings, stick to the known brands. 1
