Tweaky Posted September 16, 2021 Posted September 16, 2021 I'm a LONG time Wipeout tragic, I love my AG racing. While in discussion with others at the Wipeoutzone forum about SONY's recent purchase of Firesprite studios in the UK [A Lot of old Studio Liverpool / Psygnonis people in charge of a 250 strong team] whose specialty is making VR games. It was hypothesized that a new Wipeout was possibly coming for the PS5, when the new VR helmet and VR controller were released .....Firesprite would be the ideal people to do it, since a lot of the staff would have a intimate working knowledge of the Wipeout games. Anyway, during the discussion somebody posted the WIPEOUT RUSH is being released for IOS and ANDROID. Some were thinking that it's not a real Wipeout, as no SONY motive is included, but my argument is the SONY Legal would be all over this in a flash if that were true, and close it down. It certainly looks like a Wipeout game, I recognize some of the tracks from previous Wipeouts.......anyway, take a look.
migasson Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 I understand this is a card based game? So you don't actually do any proper racing? If so, it's a hard pass from me - I love every single one of the original games, so if it card based, what a **** idea
Bomber Rock Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Wipeout 3 Special Edition was/is my favourite game of all time. Me and 3 mates would link 2 playstations and have 2 TV's each split. We would race every track and had our own scoring system that we programmed into a commodore 64 so we had a live scoreboard on the monitor going as we raced through the tracks. We did this for many weeks and we all completely mastered the game and each of its tracks at the highest speed. Ultimate nerdery, and such special memories. I don't see the card game giving quite the same thrill. 1

You can try and play the standard WO3 on a PS3 and it will load, but at the start of a race, as you are always in the back of the grid at the start of the race, as soon as you hit the start finish line the game will freeze, this doesn't happen of the SE version, you can play as normal. Also, if you are into playing old Wipeout games via emulation software on a PC, there is a way to play online against each other, much like the old linked playstaions you mention. Only two players of course. The old Wipeout games get a whole new lease of life via emulation, and can look absolutely amazing once setup just so.....example below, two different emulation programs used. I've got the original Wipeout, Wipeout PURE and every bit of DLC ever released for it, Wipeout PULSE and the 4 DLC packs for that, and a cracked version of Wipeout 2048, all loaded onto a PSTV unit. The PSTV unit is like a hotted up VITA, and is more than capable of making these old PSP games look and play amazingly [it's got HDMI out], plus you can play these games like a full console version using a mated PS3 or PS4 controller. I've played it via my projector on a 120" wide screen and it holds up very well. But as great as those Wipeouts are, playing the Wipeout Omega pack via a VR Helmet is the ultimate.....well actually playing PS3 Wipeout HD in 3D mode, on a 3D TV is actually my personal favorite, so realistic.[I've got a 2017 Panasonic EX-780 4k and 3D TV, the last 3D TV made] Edited September 22, 2021 by Tweaky

No, and there is a reason for that, and another reason of a very good chance of a revival. When Wipeout HD came out on the PS3, all PS3 games had to have the "Players Met" function working. This was what go so many playing it, and kept it alive for so long. You race somebody and maybe not remember their online name, but if you went to the players met menu, a list of everybody you had raced against was listed, you'd shoot them a message like "Great Race" or "Almost got you" etc, and a lot of the time you'd end up adding that person to your friends list, this built up a strong online Wipeout community very quickly, and it stayed strong. The other factor was that basically everybody raced on the UK/Europe server, it wasn't divided into the 5 different country servers as it is with Wipeout Omega. Sony dropped the requirement of having to have the Players Met function with PS4 games, actually apart from the very first versions of the developers kit, this function was basically impossible to implement, something got broken in later development kits. When Omega came out you had No Players Met, and SONY EXDEV in it's infinite wisdom decided to add more servers [As soon as I saw this in the BETA trial I knew it would fragment the community] When Omega was announce a few people started several PS4 Wipeout Omega based communities, that partially help keep the online community from Wipeout HD together. The problem was, if you tried to join the UK server from Australia or the USA [As the UK/Europe has always had the biggest player base, and thus a lot of the best players], if the UK server was pretty full you would get tossed out of a room, this really annoyed a lot of people, apart from making the online look dead on all the other servers [Aus, USA, Japan]. If you didn't [ or still don't ] know to join the UK server for a good chance of a race, you would have thought the game was DOA online wise if you were in another area and got on your local server. [I got in a HUGE argument with the head of SONY EXDEV over the splitting of the servers and a few other issues at the Wipeout Omega community, and he took a real stupid position and the Wipeout Omega community backed me up, turned on him, and told him to bugger off basically ] Anyway, if you had joined one if the PS4 Wipeout communities it was pretty easy to set up a meeting time to race, but now SONY has remove communities from the PlayStation system software, so unless you have other Wipeout racing people on you Friends list, it's hard to do that now, hence few if any playing online.....although weekends from around 9pm AUS time on the UK server is your best chance. All is not lost though. SONY announced it will be adding DISCORD to the PlayStation system software around Feb 2022. So I expect a Wipeout DISCORD page will [if it hasn't already] be started, and it will be easier to organize race meets.

damiendada Posted October 5, 2021 Posted October 5, 2021 (edited) It's nice to hear from us but Wipeout should be in VR rather than mobile, given the quality of the game on PSVR. TweakBox Tutuapp Edited October 10, 2021 by damiendada 1
