Hi gang,

First ‘non-intro’ post here (though I have been busy in the classifieds).

I would like to ascertain which audio/hifi shops in Adelaide have good quality connections/accessories and cable by the metre. For example, I have spring clip speaker cable connectors on the rear of my NAD 3020A. I want to find something like 2mm speaker pin to 4mm banana plug adaptors, braided cable to 4mm banana plug adaptors, stackable banana plugs etc etc.

There are some terrific outlets for components (looking at Blackwood Sound), but they don’t seem to carry small parts, DIY parts like what I’m after.

Do any of my fellow crow eaters have any deft tips, or is it pretty much ‘order by internet’?

Thanks in advance!

Mike 🙂

I'm pretty sure that Vaf Research and Challenge HiFi sell different cable by the metre

I think for all those little connector bits then maybe Challenge HiFi would be my first stop.

Jaycar probably too but they'd have lower end stuff, if that matters to you.

To be honest though I think you'd probably be better off shopping online for that sort of thing.

I agree with this, connections/accessories and cable by the metre can all be bought online from reputable Australian outlets (so you will be getting genuine items).  Buying these from ebay/china can risk in non-genuine items.

Considering the low quality of the NAD 3020 rear connectors, product available from  Jaycar is more than adequate.  However, consider replacing the crappy spring clip connectors as I have done.   The clips are soldered directly into the PCB below & can be removed & replaced with binding posts standing upright.  Just be sure to place some insulation tape, or the like,  on the amp bottom plate beneath the posts to stop any chance of shorting.

This is excellent. Thank you very much Rockman. I have a 3020A that Richard McDonald resurrected and tweaked… I’m using that at the moment, and for now I’ll use the spring clip ms because my soldering skills need refreshing and I bought a 3120 recently that needs restoration… so I reckon I’ll incorporate your suggestion into that project and get it right there first before attempting it on any other units. I don’t want to bollocks it up and find myself with no decent amp 😆

The 3120 does work well and it does sound ace but I found surface corrosion on the mild steel of switches when inspecting the rear, and ‘painted on’ evidence of work to halt the corrosion… and I haven’t the time yet, or expertise yet to assess whether using it is a risk. It looks like my RC car and BMX restoration skills just found a new project though, time for a good soldering station and some practicing methinks 🙂

I had a look at  pics of the NAD 3020 rear spring speaker connectors, and they are horrible!  I had the exact same ones on an old JVC amp, and replaced them with binding posts, I never regretted the decision.  Tweaks like this are a very cost-effective way to improve the quality and usability of an amp, whilst correcting design flaws.
