mwhouston Posted March 6 Posted March 6 A local guy who just bought my “Aspire” 6SN7 preamp claims the 6C33C is no longer being manufactured. He has an amp which takes them and has asked if he can buy a few of mine. I have six only need four for future amp. Happy to sell. I think when I bought mine many years ago they were $20 each. Looks like they have gone up a little. 1

PKay Posted March 16 Posted March 16 My new amp. I know absolutely nothing about them so any pointer to a manual would be greatly appreciated. 4
Bisguittin Posted March 16 Posted March 16 Certainly true. Kirk's collection is unmatched. Just out of interest @xlr8or, what sort of music do you listen to with these wonderous devices? 4

The preamp came with 6C5, 227 and 80 tubes. The 227 tube had its heater wired in series of a 6.3v secondary - mods are the white cloth cable additions. I changed the heater to be parallel and used 76 tubes instead, which is the successor tube to the 227 tube. I intend to go back to the 227 tube when I have a bit more time to replace the PT with my Sansui one that arrived a few weeks ago from Japan. It has dedicated 2.5v taps. 6

I fixed all of them with the exception of the RCA ground lift needed to remove the hum. Will get some Tamura 600:600 ohm iron to nullify the return path. 4

The magic is in the next stage. I don't look at price as being a precursor for purchasing my gear. If you need to know that preamp cost me a measly $500 all up door to door from Japan. Had that a Shindo label on the front with new green hammertone powder coating finish and a buffed polished look, I'd say the multiplier would be 100x more. 4

It looks to be a Bottlehead 2A3 amp with I assume a 12AX7/AU7 input stage? The OPTs would typically be a 2.5kohm primary impedance load. Some nice caps and audio chokes have been used inside. It looks to be cathode biased. At a guess, the pots would be for volume and hum control for the heaters. The stepped pot would be a selector switch. 4

Wasn’t enquiring on amp cost but thanks, just checking availability of that tube and its cost. Im enjoying my metal tube 6N7 in a preamp of late but in situ at the mo. is Russian 6H3N-EB in two stage white follower (currently for sale). Cheap as dirt new tubes, very clear, quiet and detailed. Shows you don’t need to spend big time to get a big sound. http://retro-thermionic.blogspot.com/2022/11/mirage-6h3n-eb-preamp.html

The problem is in sourcing the circuit diagrams that use them. If you are prepared to research Japanese literature, you'll find the most extensive range of tube circuit diagrams available in existence. Did you know that MJ magazine still publishes 3-4 tube circuit diagrams every month since the 1960's. The only main challenge is in translation. 4

Also not sure what the middle valve is. 1
