Appreciate some opinions / experiences with 5y3 and equivalents please. Many thanks.

If you must use a 5Y3 look no further than the French made ST shaped Mazda 5Y3GB's. Otherwise, with a 5 to 4-pin tube adapter the 80 globe trounces all over it.

Many thanks @xlr8or. Once again I appreciate the advice. Good to have some direction. Presumably the earlier production 80 tubes from the usual suspects would be the go. With an adapter like this

https://www.ebay.com/itm/255905773561?hash=item3b952c37f9:g:B7gAAOSw1uJhwiRy&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoMEEkV%2BnBDz6KPSUzXOaGrM1YcHmdpYhQvLRfhLl4vucCqTYC%2FbBQQt881aEzIYBLJ%2FJHmoTyO3R3vmeH79K057VjDyP%2BBgRAO%2B4sWYagO2LFdMMs7tSqAfQckWo4GzJpNjVTcnf0KhAeksq0nsdm3U4ZyFdzgP8MlpYxeQFnDM4AGTfpukohFB7vyKDYAoGsV74DUl6EMltBYdFv7qwKGk%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR6q3rui6YQ

Out of curiosity as far the ST shape goes is there any standard to sizing /shape. Having a look at the big bottles I have the size and shape varies a lot. For example would GEC production rectifiers from a period use same bottle / glass.

Interesting. My ABBAS Dac uses a 5Y3 rectifier as pictured. I’ll get around to some tube rolling in it and that’s interesting info. image.thumb.jpeg.7160a158a0ffd0419861ed79490ae8f2.jpeg

The very first generation of 5Y3's manufactured in the USA, EU and UK would have most likely had the ST shape glass envelope. There are very few ST shaped 5Y3 examples floating around I suspect due to the fact that in the prototype stage of the 5Y3's development the ST shape was being phased out in preference for the straight bottle envelope shape.

Here is my recommendation for the octal 5Y3 to 4-pin 80 tube adapter:

Yes the enthusiasm of the blind has meant without even immediate use i have lined up a U50, GZ32, Bendix 6106 and of course an 80.  "Trounce" is pretty convincing!!  its the lid access for me with a socket convertor  so may just have to go the big balloon and a hole saw🙂

Maxda 5Y3 at https://www.watfordvalves.com/product_detail.asp?id=92

While not wanting to interrupt the Sunday afternoon leisure time @xlr8or do you have any opinion or 5V4 recommendations and or 83V as a sub?

The options are extensive even with the good oil from @xlr8or. Fitting is a factor for me also. I also have the rectifier hard up against the power transformer with the big bottles touching. I plan on posting when I have done some further evaluation against my Abbas 4.1SE but I changed out the E182CC for a tung-sol 5687 in a recently acquired Abbas 2.3SE (thanks @DrMikeOz). Curious on the selection of the E182CC as the 5687 is clearly an improvement in my opinion.

I'm not surprised as this has been my observation as well. In fact, Peter Qvortrup from Audio Note found the same. If you're able to get the first version of the Tung-Sol 5687's from 1948 to 1951 with the distinct vertical square getter, large copper grid posts and black ladder shaped anode plates you want look back at the E182CC/7119 tube even the pinched waist D getter version. Reference photo attached.

For the GZ32/5V4G, I really like the late 1940's and early 1950's black welded plate 1358 coded version from Mullard, Blackburn. The one below is from March 1952.

Yes, that's the ST shaped 80. If you're restricted by space try that one. Any other ST shaped 80, such as the one below, would also work with the octal to 4-pin tube rectifier adapter.

Hi everyone,

I am embarking on a tube purchase as a first timer. Would you recommend any suppliers, or ones I should stay away from? Looking for a pair of Siemens 6AK5W. Any tips appreciated. thank you!

Here is my first choice for very early 1960's Siemens Munich manufactured EF95's.

Thanks a lot! I'll take a look at it. This purchase is more expensive than the preamp that will hold these things :D

Get your wallet 😁

@calypso's love for the L63 has forced me to share these 2 on my watchlist for a week now. Hopefully, you'll also receive the special offer that I have received in the last 24h.

Kirk, how about these GEC L63? As good as the Osram/Brimar/Tungsram? Price is really good on these GEC.

Yes, Will, most definitely! We are talking about March 1950 production here from the Hammersmith factory. These ST shaped glass envelope black micanol base beauties pee pee all over the metal base straight bottle variety manufactured in the same factory a number of years later. Buy, buy and buy!

Thanks Kirk. Will update if I get them. Will be interesting to compare to other 6SN7 and its variants like the ECC32, 5692, 7N7 and 6F8G.
