I wouldn't recommend getting this mid to late 1960's pair for the asking price. You can find a similar pair for half the asking price.

What a brilliant thread! Have been reading as much as I can, has been of great assistance to this tube newbie.

Any thoughts on these:

Looking at using one in my Bottlehead Crack paired with GEC 6080

Ask the seller if they can ship internationally for the first one as you desperately want this tube. Tell him I asked for this favour as I've bought many tubes from him in the past and he owes me.

If no luck get this pair:

The @xlr8or effect! As Nada mentioned above.

I could have got them when Kirk posted the link but I got enough already. What I want more is bargain CBS 5814 😁

No doubt someone (or many of us) keeps an eye of Kirk's posts 😅

Nice NOS Marshall KT66 for approx AU$36, only trouble is you need to buy 20,000 of them to get them to that price.

A long term super investment or a group buy?

I wouldn't call these NOS....people use the term to justify the inflated price of mediocre new production tubes. But hey at 18 quid each, maybe some people would risk it 🤔

Agreed they are late production.  Risk is in the 20,000.

Gents,

I found these locally.. Advise on the SQ of these please.  I don't know when they were produced? do the numbers on them mean anything?

The good news about these tubes is they are very tightly matched for each triode section. Tektronix was a manufacturer of high end electronics testing equipment, including cathode ray oscilloscopes, which I suspect these tubes were used for. The bad news is the SQ of these Telefunken Berlin factory manufactured long smooth plate ECC82/12AU7's from the 1960's is pretty average sounding compared to other vintage types. I would recommend these tubes for use only in positions where very low noise or equal gain is required, more so for the V1 position in phono stages and line stages.

Hi Kirk,

Looking at replacements for my DAC, can you recommend-

Pair 6072A's and a single 6X5

Many thanks 🙏

Steve, GEC 6X5 if you can get one at reasonable price. My ex phono uses 6x5 and the gec is the best I have tried. Some people say bendix 5852 the best, I tried also but so so....

Thank you Kirk..Whilst I am at it.. might as well query these as well.

Below are another 2 sets of Telefunkens - the code on them says "bi".. Do these have the same SQ as the tektronix as well??

I have a Primaluna pre-amp evo300.. (& A PL power amp as well).. Your advise on the placement please..

appreciate your input.

Same SQ characteristics as the 12AU7/ECC82 tube. Made in the Telefunken, Berlin factory in September 1961 (bi).

@xlr8or

Hi Kirk,

Appreciate your knowledge in this.

Query regarding the silver patch (not sure what is this called) on top of tubes.  This is a situation I'm facing at the moment.

Tubes are GZ34.

With Amp switched OFF - silver patch on top of tube looks good and shiny and you can see your reflections on it.

With Amp swithced ON - silver patch on one of the tubes (1st photo) is becoming translucent, and you could see the through into the tube (not sure if I'm explaining this well!).  The other tube looks normal.

Appreciate your advise if I should be concerned.
