Miguel Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 Hi, I've just acquired a pair of JBL TLX8 speakers in excellent condition, apart from the grilles which have been shown a lot of love by a cat over the years, and need some new fabric gluing onto them. Everything else seems to be in excellent shape. Questions: If the woofer surrounds appear to be reasonably soft and pliable, are they probably fine? Is there any simple rule of thumb test? Anyone got any idea of the rough value of these? The vinyl wrap, paint etc seems to be in perfect condition. I've got the grilles and badges, and recovering them should be simple enough. They sound fine to my ears, if much brighter than my old Spendor BC1s. This may be more a reflection on the Spendors, though! If I was to recap the crossovers, assuming the values of the caps and resistors has wandered over the years, what sort of change in the sound should I expect? or is this a daft question given every crossover / capacitor etc is different? Thanks! 1
kelossus Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 (edited) They use rubber or cloth surround right? They will be fine. I would say they are worth a couple hundred bucks. They aren't a sort after model and the whole TLX series is kinda....budget.... If you are interested in vintage JBLs don't spend anything on these. Sell them and look for something better. Powerslave Posted November 10, 2021 Posted November 10, 2021 I own and use a pair as B speakers in a system. There's quite a few out there who want these and will pay decent, say 400+ for these on one of the vintage FB sites. If you spend a small amount of money on them keeping them going you shouldn't totally lose out in the end, but only do it if you like the sound already. They're handy for scratchy records where you don't need all that detail and wanna pound some bass 1
