Looking for a cheap reliable (new which is why this isn't a WTB post) CD transport for a friend with coaxial out, wondering what is out there. The only thing I've found so far are DVD players, starting at around $100 for known brands (not throwaway companies that make garbage.) Any suggestions?

Thanks, but way out of his budget. He has other components and just needs the most basic of basic transports with coax out but is hard up financially so at the lowest possible price new, dodgy brands notwithstanding.

This seems like the least worst option at $100:

I’d buy this over the Rotel any day even if the Rotel pumps it over SQ.   Sony started to get there Schitt together on there optical drive  and all the models from the s370 and above were the turning point in optical reliability,  can read just about any media I throw at them.  I was that impressed I bought the s370 s480 and a few others for audio duties,  5.1 bluray and also for my mother… to this day none has ever failed,    And yes I actually use it for coax out!    You don’t need anything else for bluray 5.1 it’s superb in SQ and picture quality and it’s matches the OPPO 105 that’s 5-6 times the price.   The advantage of the OPPO was that it had a ESS9018 chip and supports XLR out.

Is he any good with DIY?

Unfortunately not. He wants something complete, new,  and with warranty and support.

Pretty sold on the Sony bluray player at this stage.

That’s the best way to go, for $100 even if it did break,  it’s $100!   They don’t fix it they’ll replace it!
The other manufacturer that got the optical right was Pioneer,  there optical drives are indestructible,  all you need to do is cleaned the laser lens and it would just live!   Mum still has DV466.  It would be about $300-400 for it’s day… saw a utube on one of these and the measurement was perfect!  Pioneer use to make some really good gear that also performed and measured well.   Unfortunately they don’t make a lot of things HiFi or audiovisual anymore that’s cheap to the masses.
