ThirdDrawerDown Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 (edited) or could have been called "please critique my radio setup" I'm shifting where the stereo is, in the listening room. The new position is too far from the FM antenna outlet in the wall. What do I do? Buy a longer cable, or use a cable extension? It's the difference between the 1m I already have, and the 5m I think I will need. The setup is sourced from a 75 ohm aerial external on the roof of the house. This is the termination into the wall plug. Which leads into the next question, which is basically "have I done this right?". This thread here says not to terminate to ground when securing the cable to the receiver. But that's what I've done, I think? My understanding is that the GND terminal is for the AM section. So move the left wire along one terminal. One thing is certain, it's dusty in there. Oops. Then there's what type of cable? This web page says https://mobileone.com.au/7a_index.html Quote The next most important aspect is the antenna feed line or cable cable capacitance, It is important that when including an external antenna you use Low Capacitance coax such as RG62b/u, Do NOT use CB coax RG58 as this will attenuate the AM signal, It will not however, attenuate your FM signal. The aerial does AM and FM but the AM reception isn't that great, even though the component is a Sansui TU-9900. With thanks for guidance. Edited December 5, 2021 by ThirdDrawerDown
Stevesie Posted December 5, 2021 Posted December 5, 2021 On that type of connection on the receiver you can use another F connector and the "Coaxial Cable" connector, or the 75 ohm screw terminals without the F connector. You should have the cable braid under the "G" saddle though, not the 300 ohm screw terminal as it is now, making sure none of the braid shorts to the screw terminal for the center conductor. As to whether you use an extension or a new cable, it likely won't make any difference as long as the join is done well. If it were mine I'd use F connectors on both ends of a single length of coax. (I assume that's an F type coax connector on the back of the Sansui. It's a little hard to see in the photo) 3
Monkeyboi Posted December 9, 2021 Posted December 9, 2021 (edited) As @Stevesie accurately spotted, fit the end of that coaxial lead with a F-connector and use the female F-connector socket marked "COAXIAL CONNECTOR" on the receiver shown on the left side of your 2nd photo. This would be a superior connection to the screwed saddle clamp arrangement. However either method should work well. As for the AM antenna, a simple single wire "long wire" antenna strung up outside will give you better and hopefully lower noise AM reception over and above the capability of the loop-stick already fitted to back of the receiver.
