John Mc Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 Further information: These are old speakers which came back to Perth from the US and fell into the hands of Wyn at Simply HiFi. I bought them from Wyn who has a very well set up listening room and better amplification than I could dream of. John at Short Fuse replaced the surround on the rear woofers and respectfully shimmied the old girls stockings back in place with not a wrinkle in sight. Someone has applied a little black pen - possibly in preparation for a big night in. I like to think about it like a story my Mum told me of the older girls she knew penciling faux silk stocking seams on their legs at the end of WWII when the US servicemen were still in the UK. Alluring, mysterious and only slightly misleading. These speakers are a little too large for my set up and I feel my 35 watts per channel EL34 push pull amplifier never really got to grips with the bass drivers. There is plenty to read about these, Americans in particularly can be quite gushy about them, they do indeed have their charms. Everything works fine including, as much as I have exercised them, the mid range and tweeter adjustments on the back. I do have one pair of OEM Jumpers (to suit one speaker only), the manual and US copper pennies to protect your floorboards. Photos: 4
audiofeline Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 I note these have the original stands, which improve the sound. The vandersteen website has info to help optimise the setting up. GLWTS.
Resonance-2-Rythm Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 I owned these many years ago. Most memorable trait of these was the transparent and classy mid band reproduction, which was much better than many other speakers in their price range. If these were in Brisbane I would purchase them again with my current amplification. I drove them with Precision Fidelity C8 pre and M8 power amp but to me they needed more power to get more bottom end. GLWS
sterlo Posted January 28, 2022 Posted January 28, 2022 I owned Vandersteen 2's for YEARS! Just a great speaker. One of the greatest values of all time in speakers, IMO. It sounds fantastic with all material. The Vandersteen 2 series is a true classic, that stands the test of time. Ie, it compares favourably to speakers in 2022, exactly the same as it did back in the 90's. Buy with confidence.
